The Davis coverage gets top story in Bay Area media; KCBS/KNBR score; KTVU OK; KGO Radio asleep at the Wheel, (Again)

The first report came Saturday morning at 6: 45 when KCBS anchor, Dave Padilla, announced that Raiders owner, Al Davis, had passed away referring to a message on the team's website.

A few minutes later, both Padilla and co-anchor, Janice Wright, did an immediate phone interview with sports anchor, Hal Ramey.

The CBS Radio news at the top of the hour led with the death of Davis, ditto ABC Radio News on KGO.

Soon after, many local outlets, including KTVU's "Mornings on Two", (Weekend) began earnest coverage.

Both ESPN's Internet division, (ESPN and ESPN News) devoted healthy coverage to the Al Davis passing, (considering an early Saturday morning event, pretty top-notch coverage).

An unlikely outlet and the frequent target of my wrath delivered first-rate salvos: KNBR's Patrick Connor scored some significant phonos with Gary Radnich, Ronnie Lott, and most impressively, Raiders radio analyst and ex-coach/player, Tom Flores, who sounded utterly drained.

Nice job, P-Conn, (see how simple conversation need not be destroyed by sound drops?)

**Later on as the day progressed, local TV got heavily involved, but ran the obligatory repeated shots of a San Leandro sports bar and mostly inane comments from the assorted fans. What was good was a shot of Raiders headquarters in Alameda of a makeshift memorial--too bad we didn't get more of that with actualities instead of the repeated story line from Ricky's. (And I like Ricky's, but too much predictable reaction.)

Nice salvos: KCBS anchor Stan Bunger with John Madden this morning. Madden was most effective in his description of the side of Davis few people knew. And he did so with a noticeable emotional edge. Good radio. (A slight irritant, but I wish Bunger would have asked him if he'd been asked about a temporary gig with the Raiders as several news reports had suggested. No-go, but I'll let that slide).

*Then there was poor KGO Radio which didn't have a clue, (as usual, on the weekend). KGO simply isn't the place to go to on radio when news breaks.

Joannie Griggans was doing her Saturday exercise show and Gene Burns began his "Dining Around" program at 10 AM. The first mention of the Davis death came via a news update at the bottom of the hour. KGO's network connection, ABC provided more info than KGO.

  1. Disagree with the KGO criticism. They interrupted the travel show sometime before 7:00 AM with the news, then again at the top of the hour (ABC national news) and the little local update following the national news before the cruise guy did his spiel.
Agree with the KNBR Patrick Conner work, he did a very good job working it into his college football show.

  2. KGO Radio News has sucked for a long time..The people who chirp the news on the weekeknd and at nite are not KGO employees and they do not broadcast from the KGO studios..They are part of the Metro Traffic crew based somwwhere in San Francisco...

  3. Radnich show keeping it respectful-even Krueger is being a humanist for a change.

Raddy, also not making his Giants W.S.championship season mistake("Are they doing well?)-he's all 49ers are doing great.

  4. Thought the saloon with pcon was awful however Saturday he redeemed himself- did a hell of a job with a breaking news-sports story. Well done!

  5. Brent Musberger broke the news to the NCAA football audience on channel 7. The sadness in his voice wasn't faked.
Hey I missed Sunday Night Football. Did Al Michaels dance a jig when he mentioned the passing? Just wondering...http://www.tmz.com/2011/09/06/al-michaels-oakland-raiders-al-davis-genius-football-sunday-night-football-football-night-in-america-announcer-owner-team-nbc-super-bowl/

  6. I know you are not listening to THE GAME but Rick Tittle had a nice two hour call in show for the fans on Saturday and had a very upset Greg Papa who did his best to hold it together.

  7. Comcast Sportsnet was also all over this Saturday with 5 hours of coverage on CSN California, Bay Area and the web. It was the only place I saw reaction from the Raiders at their team hotel in Houston.

  8. I had it with Radnich and his racist PRO KRUEGER propaganda-Because Gary Radnich forgives Krueger for being a bigot,it also makes Larry a VICTIM??
Radnich who saw a bump up in the ratings takes that as his fake courage inspiration to re write what Krueger said-NEVER repeating Larry's racist rant-ever- so as to change the story over time-right Gare?
Radnich blames Alou because he would not allow Krueger to feed on his nationality? his people?
Its NOT Felipe who started the problem-it was Kreuger and KNBR.
Hey,Radnich knows how to contact me-and if he has the guts, tell me to my face-That if he cannot not see that Krugers' "Brain dead Carribeans" rant wasn't more of how black athletes are less smart then white,Then Gary's a bigger dummy then I ever thought. And that Krueger this year singled out the Latin players as "the problem" show a racist can't change his ways.

  10. Hey Stan get over it

  11. Every time Radnich has picked at the sore Kruger created in 2005, Krueger never once has recanted, apologized,or even said he was wrong. No,he sits and basks at Radnich praising him for insulting a culture. That tells me Krueger's 2005 apology was nothing but a sniveling weasel doing what ever it takes to save his job.

  12. Was visiting the Bay Area, pulled out of my hotel and tuned in KNBR a little after 9AM on Saturday. Heard Patrick talking to Gary Radnich about Mr. Davis, and figured that Al Davis has passed away. As I was going about my business that morning, whenever I was in the car I listened. I thought Conner did a damn fine job that morning with the guests and discussing the passing of an icon.

I was never a Raiders fan, nor particularly a big fan of Al Davis. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate and acknowledge all he's done for the game, and for breaking ground in areas that go beyond "just" football. It was a good listen on KNBR on Saturday morning. Good job, Patrick Conner.

  13. Hey Stan, could you have left that constant rant off of this thread? It's not only extremely tired, but it's not even relevant to this thread. Jeez... I'm not a huge fan of the Raiders, but one should respect the fact that Al Davis did a lot for "minorities" when it came to hiring them and putting them into positions they hadn't been before. Can't you leave your race card posts out of this one? Apparently not. Ridiculous...

  14. 12:36, I wonder if Stan's middle name is "Frances". He needs some time with Sgt. Hulka, that's for sure.

  15. Yeah,Al wasn't a racist like Krueger and his types. I think AL would be proud that on a day 50,000 watts of bigotry lied on air..Somebody stood up and called them down.
I checked my email, and no response from the biggest phony in local TV. Only a bigoted egotist would try and pull the "Good Larry" card after what he did.
If Bunghole and Hammer weren't bigots Krueger would never would have been rehired. THAT'S ridiculous. And shame on Larry Baer that he supports Kruger's re-hirement. If Krueger had any REAL talent..why didn't anybody else hire him?..oh,the truth again.

  16. Hey Stan, your rabid comments make Krueger look better and better every time you post, do you know that?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah,to the rightwingers. What? You thought I didn't notice that the "jokes"- putdowns are the same guys I saw on SF Hate or BANG? for every liberal they saw?
And like always try to point out-they aint saying I'm wrong about Krueger, its that it makes their head in sand world better to not read it.
I have run across Radnich in this world-I saw how he can look you in the eye and lie right through his teeth. Unless, you believe that he and Rick Quan are pals. Right Gare? just like Krueger LOVES Latin culture.
Radnich really crossed a line today. A fake journalist giving his fake version.

  18. In a way, on a certain level,I feel sorry-and along with contempt- for somebody married to a black woman to be so connected to the "clubhouse media" that he will lie and deceive for one of its disgraced members about what he had said about blacks.
It's on record what he said..nothing to deny. So why bring it up ? whats he trying to prove?-that ratings make right-huh?

  19. Finally-to answer your question I'M RESPONDING...WHY WOULD RADNICH turn a day of tribute to Al Davis into a publicity stunt to re write Larry Kruegers past? That's what crosses the line.
Just lowest broadcasting standards by Gary Radnich. If KNBR had any morals-they would fire the both of them.

  20. I thought this post was about Al Davis, not a platform for some anti-KNBR venom involving Larry and Gary. Obviously Stan absolutely despises both men, and he is entitled to his opinions (I can't say I have any great respect or positive feelings about KNBR myself, most of their programming sucks) but to spend time on this post simply ripping Gary and then labeling Krueger a 'racist' is a bit excessive and out of place. Larry may have made a major mistake targeting "Brain-Deas Caribbeans" in that infomous rant over 6 years ago, but let's move on. Unfortunately, the guy who really got screwed in that episode wasn't the guy who uttered those unfortunate remarks, nor the producer who helped open the scab two days later, nor the morning frat boy who helped to send Krueger out the door...all of those guys either kept their jobs or got them back. Bobn Agnew, the man who made KNBR whgat it was was given the boot by a gutless Tony Salvadore, and KNBR has never been the same since!

  23. Stan-shut the hell up you sound like the racist. Angry piece of crap.

  24. Great-those KNBR Young Nazi's are writing in! Welcome,Dick Nixon youth party. Bring it on...
Btw,524..you noted it was pretty much a group KNBR effort. Gary Radnich NEVER mentions any of those that you did,NEVER mentions their name. He puts NO blame on KNBR. No,the scum blames Alou. As if Felipe sat in the dugout thinking of ways to get a whole crew of KNBR bigots.

Radnich is THE biggest phony on TV. I guess he picks times like Al Davis or John Wooden's (He cheated! said Radnich) death to stir the pot so that when he goes somebody on the net will write "I remember the phony who"...

  25. Stasn...listen listen carefull...SHUT THE FUCK UP!
We're tired of listening to your anti-KNBR rants. You sound like a former employee who was wronged by the company. Did you work there once? if so, I guess I can't blame you!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stan...take it E-A-S-Y and find some good meds to calm you down. You've unfortunately exibited all of your anger issues on this thread for all to see and it's very sad and a poor reflection on you that you would do such as thing.

Hey I agree with you...Gary is an insecure, insincere two-faced lout, and Larry is slavishly chortling at every old, tired Gary joke, but I can't blame the man for taking a job at KNBR...he's got a wife and four kids to feed! Take that into consideration before you start labeling somebody a racist and impugning their character. Larry was a naive fool to say what he did on that unfortunately evening 6 plus years ago, but KNBR was every bit as complicent and so were the Giants and Felipe Alou for making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's an old story and is really wearying to have to hear it again.
I know a lot more about this situation than you would ever know, so please don't try to recreate some revisionist history here.

Besides, this thread was originally started as a
tribute to Al Davis. I think he deserves a little more respect than you whining like a little tattletale kid about your issues with Gary and larry! GROW UP!

  27. First of all,I can tell you didn't read what I wrote fully. This started on a day Radnich and KNBR began as a tribute to Al Davis..then Radnich decided it was the best time to remake 2005 and Krueger. SO,I responded with all the fire and truths I could post. It was Radnich taking advantake of Al Davis's death to build up Kreuger-as I said, stooping to lowest broadcasting ethics I think I've heard since..well,Randich called John Wooden a cheat the day after he died..and laughed!
Look I KNOW Radnich has loose screws..but I see he takes advantage of his fame for some really devious positions.
AND I do want to repeat that this is about the 3rd or 4th time Raddy has gotten into the 2005 fiasco ..and Krueger NOT ONCE has said he takes responsibility,or a simple he's sorry. NOT ONCE!..As the other poster pointed out..a few people were in on it and ugly racist words were said..And Radnich never mentions any of that.
Felipe has family too! I don't see Radnich troubled that KNBR CREATED 2005.
Other then 415 media-WHO answers Radnich and KNBR? who? There are no established Latino bloggers to take on KNBR. Paul G. at Comcast? He's so low on the totem pole..well, he has a family too. So I understand that he has to play it conservative. I KNOW when your the only one,its much harder.
Thats why when Raddy flaunts the good old boy system that took back a Kreuger and then says thats not good enough, lets now slander Felipe as evil..I answer. AND I'm right.
    thanks-
    Stan.
