Labor Day Random Thoughts

Hello minions.

Labor Day, 2011. And everybody in town is taking the day off. The Chronicle is about 3 pages deep. Or so it seems. What the hell, newspapers are dying, right? At least Ostler has a nice piece on the Giants. Probably through, unless your Martie Lurie or Larry Baer. That's not a knock on Martie, by the way, he's simply the eternal optimist and I imagine he'll say its not over till its over in his ninth hour after Monday's game in San Diego....

After my customary 4th cup of Peets, turned on KGO Radio and Pat Thurston was subbing for Ronn Owens. Surprise! Owens has the Johnny Carson schedule--works about 100 days a year now. I like Pat Thurston, but I don't think she's as great as KGO's suits thinks she is; Maybe its the voice. Hey, don't call me sexist, there's enough johnsons, (careful), over there I have issues with too. I like this Stacy Taylor guy but naturally, they put him on when nobody is listening. Christine Craft, even though Christine can be snarly with callers--then again, she's damn smart. God Bless Gene Burns for fighting back, but I hope its not merely a tease....

Caught Joe Montana on a Knibber "best of" show, (read: taped) Funny, Montana still looks like Barry Manilow and can probably toss better than Alex Smith. I'm not kidding, which is scary....Looks as if everyone is in a mellow mood. Downtown is positively gray and empty, save for the tourists and they look, well, touristy...I think I'm going to head to Tommy's Joynt and watch a little college football. Yes, I love Tommy's--a throwback place. The yuppie-free zone where the old school meet. No tapas there. You want tapas? Oh please....

Labor Day 2011. Hell, Wasn't it just February? Time flies when you're not having fun. A zigzag pace in today's faster world. Thank you internet. Yes, I'm rambling. At least I'm consistent. Never have I more admired Caen for doing this professionally six days a week. Yeah, I know he had helpers, but so did Montana. I recall a fellow named Rice and Clark. Craig and Taylor. Cross and big o-linemen. (Paging Ira Miller.)

OK, time to head out. Have a cold one on me today and feel free to throw a few darts, I'm used to it now.

  1. As I write this I am listening to Pat Thurston, "the voice". I don't get it. I love her voice...find it melodic and lovely, really. (I am a woman, fyi.) I think she is plenty smart... as is Christine Craft... and as for Ronn Owens... he's had bankers' hours forever... am getting tired of his predictability, commercials... but do love the joke hour with Brian Copeland. (your favorite). Have a great day, Rich.

  3. I like Pat Thurston....

Well that clinches it...you and PaloAlto need some serious time off!

Yecch! Pat Thurston couldn't have a rational thought even accidently!

  4. I do not know if Pat understands the rules of the information economy-driven jungle. But she does have a nice rack in her younger days. Pat sells the message of me against the oppressed elite. But she does not offers any relevant solution in her points. I remembered how Dr. Bill indirectly ripped her for bring a stupid guest who made a lot of claims, but he did not present any evidence. I am guessing that he will not get any pastries from her any time soon.

  5. KNBR's quick split: A brief, discordant experiment in local sports radio came to an end this week.

Damon Bruce is no longer sharing the 9-'til-noon weekday slot with Gary Radnich on KNBR 680. After a very brief run trying to coexist with Radnich, Bruce returns to KNBR 1050, where he will again be the solo host of his own daily show from noon to 3. And Radnich returns to work, where he will team up with Larry Krueger in his usual morning spot.

While the experiment was intriguing, it was clear from the start that there would be trouble. Both men are used to hosting solo shows. The chemistry was awful.

"We teamed them up because we wanted Gary to work with a partner," said Lee Hammer, KNBR's programming director. "In the end, we found that Damon was better as a solo host."

Things grew a bit weird last week when Radnich did not return from his usual August vacation as planned. He was supposed to be back Monday, but didn't show up. The station said he'd been caught up in post-hurricane weather on the East Coast. But that explanation wore a little thin as the week dragged on.

People familiar with the situation believe Radnich was none too happy with the pairing and didn't want it to continue. Others think Bruce was coming on too strong on the air, causing a rift.

In the end, it doesn't much matter. The result is the same.

The Gary and Damon show is no longer, which is for the best.

  6. Random thoughts- Tim Kawakami is now the buddy of the Warriors, admires Al Davis, and couldnt be more in bed with Joe Lacob..must be cozy with Fitz in there too. He's said it all before his writings scream, and he's no longer interested.
KNBR and Radnich..the dying star in his last bloated gasps. Nice run,but they can't find a fit for him even with nobody of quality to replace him. Just bad radio all around from Lee Hammer and Bill Bungerhole.
Christine Loren..who announce today was a day of-FOOTBALL. uh,no it isnt. Nice tits, that's all that matters.
Kuiper who makes excuses for the white players-Huff dropped a ball because Kuiper claims,he was "spiked" except,- the slide was head first! Kuiper and Krukow later ripped Andres Torres for a baserunning mistake..none of their patented excuses for the latin players. No "He's a great guy in the clubhouse"..for Torres. They still havent noticed Rowand was in a slump..for three years.
Damon Bruce- a whole lot of nothing there. On 1050 he can imagine its Chicago in October ,all year and talk midwest football. GO Boilermakers!
95.7...still not 100% committed to the fight. They should take no prisoners while the opponent is punch drunk.
Finally Comcast at 5. Only because there isnt any other local channel doing the same at the time. It used to be you watched because they were good in the old days. Maybe, the loss of Mindy Bach was too much after losing Papa?

  7. Martie Lurie actually said on his post game show yesterday that the Giants were done. I think he and everyone else who thinks that should go away for the rest of the season.

  8. Anyone catch the eagerly and heavily promoted Hue Jackson show on KNBR this morning?
