The talk shows hosts on 'the Game' sound like a bunch of loud-mouth, know-it-all frat boys who sit around and talk sports while tweeting and texting their peeps. And their ridiculous TV and radio ads where they lampoon and ridicule 'the sports leader' are immature and childishly pathetic attempts to get people to notice them. Well guess what guys: it ain't workin'!
If you want to be different and challenge the "sports Leader," you've either got to get the Giants, 49ers, Raiders or Warriors on your station, or actually have shows that are interesting, informative and credible. No one listens to the Sharks or A's on the radio (too bad for Korach and Ruzonowski, who are actually solid pros), and no ones listens to the mediocre newcomers such as Tierney and Lund during the week. These newcomers show up and right away talk about "taking over the market from KNBR," yet most of the programming that 'the Game' offers is just another variety of the same stale crap that KNBR puts out there. You'd think with two all sports radio stations in San Francisco that we'd at least get a few programs worth listening to. But if you hire people to run these stations who know nothing about bay area sports, then hire a bunch of jerks, loudmouths, twits, nit-wits and bimbo airhead, you're going to get the kind of unlistenable nonsense and treacle that we've now heard for all too long! It's a shame, because bay area sports fans deserve better!
Better a loudmouth who actually talks sports than gigglers, "battered performers and soundboards. 95.7 is about 70-30 ratio to KNBR now ( and thats with Giants games included. Only thing that can go away from The Game is too much Lund with Urban (too grab-assy "Mike and Mike" for me)
95.7 has in weeks, showed more than KNBR's stale units. Sure the THEGAMES morning show has weakness...but already is more truthful then KNBRS Smurfs. Lund and Papa is lightyears better then Fitz and Brooks. Why with any alternative anybody would choose F&B is a mystery. 95.7,Ironically, might be much better off without Slick Billys perennialy boring losers. KNBR's equivalent of a Corvair might be shown up by 95.7's real competition.
Geez...you'd think Brandon Tierney would have more to do with his free than spending his evenings checking out postings on a web site that is constantly ripping and ridiculing the local media, including the program he hosts.
My advice to you, Brandon my friend? Get out of your apartment or house or condo and actually spend some time seeing the real world instead of staring at a screen and worrying about what people who don't even matter in your life are saying and take this stuff too seriously. Opinions are like a....holes and everyone's got one as they say!
There are a lot of other things to do that will fill your time well: meeting a pretty girl, going to a nice restaurant, walking on the beach, reading a book, or even going to a game. You're a pretty sad character if all you've got to do on a Friday night in one of the great places is look at postings from dweebs who don't know anything more about the media and local sports than the guy on the street. For cripes sakes my friend, get a life and don't waste your valuable time! Life is too short for this nonsense!
I can't believe that anyone with any understanding or appreciation of sports on the radio would seriously waste their time listening to either of these lightweight stations and their noisy, nonsensical hosts.
I was hoping that 95.7 would be different and provide some alternative to the crap that KNBR tries to pander as sports programming, but sad truth is that the game' uses the same noisy sound effects and juvenile jokes to try and attract 'the young demographic' as does KNBR.
By the way....Just what the hell is the 'young demographic' anyway and why are they so damned important? Aren't there a lot of other people out there who are perhaps of a different age but like to actually hear creative, interesting and informative programs? Just because the rest of us don't waste a lot of time tweeting and texting, and actually like having face to face conversations with each other, and know how to spell correctly and speak the language in an intelligent and coherent manner shouldn't discount us as valued listeners! Perhaps we've had an advantage in that we didn't grow up in a time when the media didn't cater to an attention-deficit oriented society.
That's the big problem as I see it with radio programmers. They dismiss everyone they feel doesn't seem to matter to their marketing plans. They seem to feel that those outside of the young demographic are of no importance and that their opinions should be discounted or scoffed at because those people are too 'old school' and live in the romantic past.
That kind of attitude (and sell-outs like Gary Radnich buy into that philosophy) shows not only a great disrespect for others but is short-sided thinking at best.
But I don't blame the 'talent' on these radio stations because they're only taking jobs that are being offered for less money and with lower standards than before by the 'genius' programmers who run these operations. That's because most of these operations are run on the cheap, and actually putting talented, accomplished and respectable people on the air would require these corporate cretins to actually pay the talent a living wage as they used to. And these same bloodless programmers seem to think that if you cater to the low brow mentality and try to attract people who's experience in life and understanding of what's going on is limited, that their stations will somehow enjoy long term success. Where do these fools come from and why did they have to get into broadcasting?
This is the bay area, a place where we actually have a lot of well educated and worldly people, and many of them also happen to be quite successful. Many of these same folks might buy your product if they're interested and need it, and they also happen to be sports fans. They will tune into intelligent and creative programming, but like me, they will quickly turn the dial or shut off the radio and turn on a CD if they hear the drivel that people like the mid day gigglers (Fitz and Brooks) or loudmouths (Tierney and Urban) spew out on a daily basis. I call that kind of crap 'verbal puke,' and it not only gets old real fast, but gives me a major headache.
However there are many people who expect low standards on the radio, and so they don't seem to mind or care because they seem to think that's the way it always has been. Consequently, they will waste valuable hours of their time listening to the dreck that KNBR and 95.7 present to the Northern California each day. Perhaps they're hoping to hear something revealing and different. Well guess what...DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH...!
Uh, Rich didn't say anything Tierney; there's just a picture. Act a little more humble there guy, the Bay Area sports world existed before you came here.
How do I know that is the real Tierney? I didn't read a "buddy" at the end there! lol
Kidding, of course. I've been listening and giving you guys a shot. I appreciate the effort to try to fit into the market. The Bay Area can be a tough nut to crack but, with patience, it can be done. Keep up the good work!
Back to the topic: The Game post A's?? I think they will do well. They haven't been the complete Athletics-centric station that some hoped they would be and that is probably for the best. Other that Chris Townsend's Pre and Post and the 3 hour window for the game, they don't have to transition much from what they are doing now: talking NFL and other sports.
And I, for one, LOVE the lampooning KNBR commercials!! "Put your pants back on, Mr. B!" They aren't playing it soft but are aggressively going after the top dog. I wish other stations and businesses (and sports teams) would get off their duffs and compete like this.
THEGAME might have room for much improvement-but KNBR is beyond hope...well,until that big shakeup if it happens, happens. Morning? I take the games trio over KNBR's "hey kids, let's put on a show!" act. Lund and Papa beat Radnich and Krueger, hands down. Lund and Urban is weaker..and old Raddy can still whip a Lund and Berstein with ease. That last pairing-too much alike equals boring. Teirney is improving, but Davis...the 49ers do no wrong.A bigger improvement in Teirneys game would be to stand up to Davis instead of conceding points. Stand your ground man. YOU KNOW Eric is a 49er homer on a station that doesn't carry the team..so why agree with him when you started off on the right foot telling him he's wrong? What good did it do Radnich to agree with Eric?..if you catch my drift. YOUR the station that doesnt carry the team-so why help KNBR by letting Davis wear the rose colored glasses everyday? crazy.
What was KNBR 1050 this morning from 7-10 am? Goomba Gambling Show, Goomba Gambling Show and yet another Goomba Gambling Show. Meanwhile 680 had "Hookers on Golf" and "Monotone Moneytalk". Thank God there is the FM alternative!
The slogan "only sports station on FM" is utterly stupid. Who cares - radio is radio. If anything it is a negative because it means that you will lose the signal sooner on your way to Tahoe.
The Game is growing on me. I like Lund/Papa and Tierney/Davis. The ads that rip KNBR make me laugh. KNBR gave up trying along time ago. Ralph mails it in. The M/M show in the morning is beyond DULL...and they have killed Sportsphone 680 by taking it away from Bruce and giving it to the two worst radio sportshosts I have ever heard...FP now Byrnes. So I'm giving them a chance.
Can I be honest, I love listening to the Game. I'm 32 years old, I've been listening to KNBR since I was 13 years old. My only hope is that this station can find an audience because I love it. My only concern is that Niners Monday happens one day after every Raiders exciting win or loss and thats not good.
I like the game, way better than the crap on 680. Smurfs, Fitz and Brooks, Radnich, and the other old guy that babbles on about nothing for ages- Ralph- all need to go. Even then, it wouldn't make any difference, I'd still listen to 95.7. The turning point for me was when the Smurfs said they had an interview with Jed York coming up. One of the smurfs (or both, can't remember) were at the 49ers training ground, York shows up and first question was: "Did you have a nice wedding ?" followed by: "She's a lovely girl, any plans to go anywhere?" And so on. After that I turned KNBR off and never looked back.
Still miles ahead of KNBR. It's not even close.

Rich is right to a certain degree. Now that the A's are done, 95.7 will be taking a near-dirt nap until next Spring.
