You have spoken and I'm listening; Trespassing through the 415 Media fortress

OK, so that was short, yes, I mean, how many times can you write about the obvious and even at that, who cares?

You do. A lot of you do. I read all the comments, the e-mail, the feedback, and there's a huge appetite, a huge demand for information and commentary in the Bay Area media circle. Too bad the resources that it takes, the time and money, the effort, is vastly ignored in the local mainstream media machine, (i.e., SFGate, The Chronicle, BANG, et al)

Then again, the traditional guys have always tended to be more 'Mr. Softie' and offered nothing more than ungodly amounts of mostly inane and innocuous PR chit sheets; an area that likes to pretend that its cosmopolitan flair extends beyond the restaurants, the views, the fog, etc. (And how shallow is that, really?)

Sadly, the old guard outlets, (and some new ones,) are becoming more banal and useless by the day. I don't have to name them--you already know, and I've gone down that road way too many times. At this point, the only reason to even mention them anymore is when one of their ninny's happens to split, disappear, or, more apropos of late, shown the door.

A longtime local observer recently called and we spoke at great length of just how god-awful the industry is here--sure, a few old stalwarts and reliables exist amid the abyss, but they are far outnumbered by the dreck and schleck club; the giddy, goofy, amateurs extraordinaire who are willing to work at any cost, by any means, and were lucky enough to be courted and hired by a bunch of silly, ego-inflated bean counters whose "power" consists of being able to kowtow and kiss a bunch of corporate ass. They think they really have nirvana but in reality all they really possess is the art of good timing. They thrive in a climate like this, in down times, when the bottom line truncates real talent, ingenuity, and creative girth.

Even at that, we have some solid pros here. We're blessed to have the reporting depth of a Rita Williams at KTVU; the perennially solid Vic Lee, Wayne Freedman and Carolyn Johnson at KGO. The relentless street reporters, Bob Melrose, at KCBS, and his City Hall colleague, Barbara Taylor. The mighty magnitude of Michael Krasny on KQED, the still magical Jon Carroll at the Chron and although he's waned a bit of late, the reliability of Ronn Owens at fledging KGO Radio.

We should give credit to some of the more underrated tonsils, the Ted Robinsons' of the world, the sheer wonderment of listening to the A's lead play-by-play guy, Ken Korach. Have you ever heard Korach? Just give him ten minutes and see what I mean. And we must also acknowledge the greatness, the thoroughly entertaining and professionalism of Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda. I'm not a big hockey guy, but those two guys make it fun and refreshing.

Speaking of which, how fun and refreshing it would be to see, to view, to listen and watch to some soles who were beyond bland and dull. Hey Bill King, we miss you. You were not only the King, you also had the balls to speak out and not kowtow. Sure, we all love Miller, but seriously, how much Kruk and Kuip can 'yous all take? I guess a World Series championship will allow the masses to feast in above-average broadcast mediocrity. Then again, Kruk and Kuip beats the hell out of Ray Fosse and Glenn Kuiper. (Boy, that's a helluva plug, ain't it?)

I'm back. And in spite of myself, I'm going to try to churn out all the info, the various chitchat, the good and bad minutiae that you all very much cherish, (apparently.)

Like everyone and anything else, we'll score a bit, hit a few homeruns and occasionally break some news. We'll also make mistakes too, but hell, this is a blog--like I've said too many times, you want the NY Times and Howard Kurtz, you know where to find 'em.

In the meantime, I'm going to look for a decent NY pizza. Anybody got any ideas? And a bagel too. See, it's the water, I'm telling you, it's all in the water.

  1. Korach is great, he worked with King all those years, the magic rubbed off. Also, kudos for telling it like it is with Kruk and Kuip. They are so horrible, it's beyond scope.

  2. I actually like Kruk and Kuip. Perhaps it's because I have been listening to them for years and have grown accustomed. Welcome back, Rich. I hope everything goes much smoother. I personally am a fan of your blog and enjoy what you have to offer. I am looking forward to your upcoming book, "How to sleep your way to the top: The Darya Folsom story" (said tongue in cheek). Don't let the assholes get you down!

  4. Kruk and Kuip? Dumb and Dumber is more like it... I cant stand the homerism - actually Kuiper isnt that bad - but Krukow...yikes... He should stick to making commercials with Joe Putnam.
Good NY style pizza? Try Pasquales out on Irving. DAMN good. Not like that pizza sauce and toppings on a cracker you get at Amici's - and WAY overpriced....

  5. Yet another delusional post. 90% of the comments regarding your hiatus were negative. Hardly anyone asked you to comeback. Yet you waltz back like the Bay Area came to a grinding halt in your “absence”.

  9. We saw two Bay Area broadcasting greats retire in 2008 because of what Lieberman is saying in 2011: KTVU's greatest Dennis Richmond (although both burnout and chronic back pain also hastened his departure) and KFOG's Dave Morey (whose views on the industry pretty much mirror that of Lieberman's; he moved back to his native Michigan to enjoy nature and his beloved J[udge]J[udy] - who "really rules" in Morey's eyes - reruns).

  10. are you really watching the evening newscasts?
Please do so for at least a few weeks to see who is really doing the heavy lifting at the Bay Area stations.
Seems you are relying on old notes from the past. some of the people you rave about don't even do daily news anymore.

  12. I know many of us 'Boomers' get sometimes accused of living in the past, but I certainly long for those days when I culd turn on the radio or TV here in the Bay Area and listen to some solid professional broadcast journalists who respected the audience, knew they had an obligation to serve the public, and worked hard to give their audience the fullness and fairness of coverage that they deserved.

How did it go bad so quickly? Sometimes I feel like Washington Irving's quirky character Rip Van Winkle, having woken up to an alien world where nothing is recognizable anymore! Perhaps I wasn't paying attention. Now the only radio stations I have stomach for are KQED, (Michael Krasney is a gem....KGO never should have pushed him away),
KCBS (yes the 'news wheel' gets repetitive but they don't miss a beat and they don't serve out portions of the nonsensical, tabloid, 'junk news' that so many stations now feel compelled churn out. I still, out of habit sometimes listen to The Razor and Mr T, although ralph sounds old and tired and takes forever to ask a question, and Tom sometimes gets hung up and being too 'uber-hip,' to keep the 'younger demographic' happy. Gary Radnich's act is wearing thin, except when he's teammed up with Bruno. I have to give Radnich credit though, as he's riding this wave for as long as he can! Good for you Gary!
KGO also has some solid pros in their news department, and though Citadel cut back their staff, they still havew a good core group.
I also agree with Rich about Randy Hahn and Drew Rememda. I'm not a huge hockey fan but I'll watch their broadcasts because they make hockey fun and interesting and I always learn something new about that unique sport when I catch one of their telcasts. Rich Walcoff on KGO is also someone I enjoy, as he is very creative and hard working, and has a very distinct and passionate style that sets him apart. And Vern Glenn of KRON is also special; he's one ofthe few people left on that once-proud station who are worth tuning into. Vern is one of the more upbeat people around, and I like his refreshing approach to sports. Mindy Bach at Comcast has also come a long way, and she actually sounds as if she knows what she's talking about. Dave Benz is entertaining, and Brodie Brazil will be a big name in the bay area someday. This young man has got grade-a talent.
Unfortunately, so many of the young people I run into today who want to get into broadcasting seem to want to make a career of it for all of the wrong reasons.
I have encountered very few that are interested in history, (of any kind), few who follow politics or world news events, and fewer still who have curious, inquiring minds and are interesting in telling important and compelling stories. Many seem to want to get in the field because it "sounds like fun and you can make some good money!" Yeah, that used to be the case before things such as voicetracking threw a lot of good broadcasters out of work. I guess when the bean counters like Lew Dickey and the mudslingers such as Rpert Murdoch took over, that's when things started to go sour.

Oh well, enough griping for now...it's too nice a day to be a grouch!
