So, you want some back material, deeper thought and reflection. A little more depth. Sure, keep in mind that as I've said on numerous occasions I'm not a very good writer. I can talk better than I write which explains why I'm blogging. (Wink, wink.)
As I navigate through the sordid fortress once again, I can see, read, and hear all the frauds at work once again. A reader asked me to be a little more "Roger Ebert" and less Beavis, which kind of befuddled me a bit, after all, I thought I made my point(s) rather clear.
True, I do take a lot of shots here, but I think I make my case. And at least own up to the rip jobs by placing my name behind all the blasts. Are they personal? Sure, to some extent because egos are involved and that's personal.
I've railed on and on about how how truly scurrilous KRON is; how utterly phony and disingenuous Copeland is; how Comcast Sports Bay Area is nothing more than a vanilla/Wonder bread factory staffed by mostly young and cheap hacks that wouldn't know talent and ingenuity if their life depended on it.
More shops are getting more awful by the moment. KPIX is losing more cred by the day, viewers too, as they chip/chop more personnel and looked rather ordinary-sorta down a Fresno path with little soul and spirit. They are lead by a truly mean-spirited guy who likes to show his limited power, yeah, "power", what a fuckin' joke. Truth is, with all the slash-and-dash, the results are essentially the same. Good planning. And that weekend sports diva is still the shits, but at least she has an excuse. The M-F guy seems more concerned about his hair and GQ-look. Keep reading the teleprompter, fashion boy.
KRON is still KRON which means as long as they have those assholes upstairs mining the fields, nothing will change, not even a potential new owner. But if Young is able to sell, first thing new owner must do is rid the building of the Big 3, the GM, his sleazy news direc and his buddy, countess bitch-goddess. They're total frauds and imbeciles who only stay on because perhaps, they have pictures and work cheap enough that corporate is satisfied with their inept, insufferable, abysmal running-into-the-ground operation.
KGO-TV saunters on, managing a decent product, adding more news segments, but starting to show a rather bland and benign, antiseptic, really, approach to local TV news. They have quality people over there, but somehow they seem to be more muted by the day, welcome to the new business model.
KTVU still rules the market, although I'm frightened by the new look, the false "high energy" of some of the newer hired hands. I can watch Rita Williams, Ken Wayne, Frank Somerville, and John Fowler nonstop and am delighted that Mark Ibanez is still at the ship, but I cringe at Eric Rasmussen and Mike Mibach.
KNTV, (NBC Bay Area), I don't have the slightest idea of what they're shooting for, what direction they want to take--maybe they don't have a clue either. They seem, of late, to just want to throw some new shit on the wall and see if it sticks...I like Raj Mathai, but I question the outright dissing of Tom Sinkovitz--that was a shit move. And if Janelle Wang is your splashy new hire, you're in serious disarray.
Radio makes me want to puke. I thought LA was bad, what with KABC and KFI sounding so astonishingly horrid, until I had to listen to present-day SF terrestrial audio excrement. Shit, its so sad. So sad.
You have fucking interns, INTERNS, doing news updates. You have garbage outlets that were once dominant and admired, respected and envied. Now you have has-beens and asshole phonies who represent "talent." Really, no-name nothings who do the same tired shit day in and day out who pretend one thing and actually execute the opposite.
One in particular, and I've mentioned him too many times, is one foot out the door. He used to be the king here, a long time ago, but is now firmly ensconced in radio trivial pursuit. He has a habit of telling people that they should have kids and concentrate on their family--I think he thinks he's Dr. Phil. Maybe he should practice what he preaches. He likes to take indirect shots at people whom he's deeply insecure with, yet his own past personal life is filled with enough peccadilloes to fill a section at AT&T Park.
The fact that no one takes him to task is quite comical. He's open picking--personally, I know there's a growing legion of people who despise the phony, but are afraid of his "power." Power? What power? He's a fucking shill and asshole to the 20th power. He has more enemies than I do. And he's at the last stage of his work, let him just know that I know everything. He doesn't fool me anymore--maybe he thinks he's still a hero, but he's not.
**I've now mostly turned to satellite, KCSM, KCBS and KQED.
KGO, like Elvis, left the building many moons ago. I feel sorry for them, really I do, because for a time, KGO, like KSFO, was the industry giant in SF. Now, one is on its last legs and the other is merely audio wall paper for the right-wing echo machine. Talk about blather.
KGO, the post-Luckoff era, like the Titanic, although the Titanic at least had better bathrooms. KGO seems to think that catering to the young demo means hiring weekend boobs and mentioning Facebook equals promise. Yeah, promise my ass.
Karel? Laughingstock of the town. This is a schmuck who now uses his show to hack items on his website, plug his "comedy shows" so he can pay his mortgage. When he's not mock-crying or railing about nothing, it gives him a chance to spew forth his veiled racism. Gay, straight, bi-sexual, I could care less, this hack is an utter bore.
And Copie? Seriously, Brian, you think you got shit on me? Really now, ask the other comics in town what I have on you? You wanna go that path and dance with the devil, be my guest. I used to think you were funny and creative, but all you are is a major, A-grade back-stabber. And the audience knows your a complete phony too, or did you care to inquire? A ha, who needs consultants.
The truth is nobody's perfect. Including me. But I don't profess, and never have, that my shit don't stink. This business went to hell in a hand basket, and yes, I know I'm repeating myself, but just when you think it can't get any worse, it gets worser.
Yeah, Olbermann is a pain in the ass, but I'll listen to him. He's good. Jon Stewart is starting to get too big and lose his edge, but he's still infinitely so brilliant that you stop and listen and watch. Charlie Rose has NY nuance and pizazz--the old Tom Snyder set works too. Ronn Owens lost his luster a few years back, but he can still make me listen to an open hour of news talk, (minus the Sleeptrain ad.) Michael Krasny, Sonny Buxton, Scott Ostler, Jon Carroll, you have my eyes and ears.
The rest of 'yous? Bad. So artificial. So softie. Maybe it's the water here. Which explains why the pizza and bagels generally suck and the delis are so fucking abysmal. And seriously, where the hell can you get a good drink at a nice bar? I HATE the newbie places--they reek of a cheap hooker in the tenderloin. And damn, that gets old, like a bad dream.
Anyway, have a cool 4th and as my buddy, Billy Joel and InsideCable says, DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN!

Rich, why don't you tell the fine folks why you stopped calling "the king". You used to call him all the time and he put you on the air and then something happened. You're right about his past, not the greatest of family men.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is getting a bit strange. First a couple of days off. Then a declaration of war, or so it seems. Lots of four letter words. Talk of "nothing to lose" and how tough you are. But still referring to people in muted terms, why not just say Gary Radnich instead of all the oblong descriptions? If you're so tough, name names. Period. Most of your points have validity except you don't quite understand that times are changing, and the old line institutions you cite are struggling a bit to keep up. God forbid what you would write if you were a newspaper man.
ReplyDeleteRich, I read your blog daily, this is good. I agree, you need to name people! Stop beating around the bush. You are like no one else in the bay, you tell the truth about the media. Please let it rip......
ReplyDeleteYes Copie is a turd.......
Rich
ReplyDelete2 problems here,
1. radio is mostly obsolete, we are watching its death throes.
2. San Francisco along with most big cites is operating on an obsolete social model and more regular folk are leaving town every day, me included (the Sierras)
I read internet magazines, listen to internet radio, buy books on the internet and have a much better selection than the parochial tripe I grew up on in the Bay Area.
Hold on a second....someone is actually having sex with Radnich???
ReplyDeleteNo way.... ummmm...I think I'm going to be sick
Rich, Love your work, keep it up, You are my only source to the real world in Bay Area Media.
ReplyDeleteRosenheim is the SCUM OF THE EARTH. He destroyed KRON which was given over to an even bigger moron. Why do you expect anything different for KPIX?
ReplyDeleteIt's not all bad. Lots of new tv girls with big boobs and tight tops.
ReplyDeleteI really do not see what you have against KRON. As a casual viewer I find it amusing. I laugh at all of their mistakes. I roll my eyes at its news judgement. And yeah, the on air crew is a bit young or frumpy sometimes. And hats off to Pam Moore for at least rolling with the punches. They must be paying her a pretty penny to stay put. But you really have to give them some credit. It looks like they lead the way in this cost cutting scheme that other stations (KPIX and NBC11) are going through now. It does more news than anyone else with (I am assuming) the smallest staff of all. I bet stations in Monterey have more people than KRON. More work, fewer people, and those who are working are likely making less. What do you expect?
ReplyDeleteKGO is rock solid. KTVU is only good because of the 10pm time slot with no competition. If more people leave in San Jose than any other area, why isn't NBC11 doing better? My guess is the lingering stigma of once being a Salinas/Monterey station, although they look to me to be the most polished looking place astetically.
On radio, KCBS is king. I never hear anything from you about this place. Guess it must be doing good.
Besides, when it comes down to it, don't we all get the important news we need from some sort of feed, whether it be RSS, Facebook, Twitter or whathaveyou?
The way Radnich tells it,he was "ok with Leiberman"..then he says,Rich wanted him to tell some inside stuff...after all, thats what Rich's column is for. Radnich then told Ray Woodsen in a sort of serious tone "You dont want to be a part of those types".." What good do they do me?"..
ReplyDeleteThe laughable part of course is Radnich is the biggest chismoso(Google it!) in town! Nobody can gossip like Radnich..all with his spin on it if its not the right fit as all truth.
Yeah,Gary Radnich was afraid Rich Leiberman was going to corrupt him-lol.
btw,I heard Radnich Thursday advising Jacky that the best way to last is "to mind you own business"-LOL!
Get some help.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I will call the show tomorrow and bring up your name. Be listening. Let's get to the bottom of this shit.
ReplyDeleteKFI, Conway and Steckler on Fridays is good stuff. We don't have that quality stuff here.
ReplyDeleteTom
Uncle Tom (Copie) won an Emmy! He b the man now...
ReplyDeleteOk,lets talk racism in the media- Why Asian woman are paired with white men 90% of the time..or a black man the rest. Why are there NO latino big names anymore(of the few there were) in local news? 2-7 have no Latino males doing lead news...even though the bay area is half Latino.
ReplyDeleteKNBR-ALL white. Even their Lesbians have to be white.
Comcast...funny that Griggs does hire more diversity..but after a while, you see all the big names on the panel are white. No chance at all the panel would be majority people of color on Comcast at 5.
Andrew Baggardly- even Kuiper to as lesser degree, quick to scapegoat the latin and black players in a loss, but he wont EVEN MENTION,that Cody Ross left the bases loaded,or like yesterday Ross single handedly gave the Cubs a lead when he bobbled a ball, then threw to 2nd while the runner from second ran home! Baggardly doesnt say a word. Ross quit on the play.
MLK would ask is that it? THIS? is as far as we've gotten? All the media GM's are white, all who hire are white. ALL the best jobs to white men who also get to still do the judging of others.
If Brian Copeland had read about Rich daring to dance with the devil, would he proclaim, "It's on like Donkey Kong, Big Vinny!" Where do we place our bets on the winner of the feud?
ReplyDeleteI miss guys like Dave McElhatton & Bill Hillman and gals like Elaine Corral. Just all around good newsmen who weren't in love with the image of themselves. Before TV anchors were pretty faces and "personalities" in and of themselves. Back before all of this PC baloney about race, religion, creed and the worst of them all - sexuality.
ReplyDeleteDiane, as you roll your glozzies over KRON's
ReplyDeletenews "judgement"(SIC)...please be advised that "judgment" has one "e".
@ July 4, 2011 8:48 Am Latinos make up 20% of the Bay Area's population.Whites make up 58%. C'mon man, calm down. Have a good 4th.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious, Rich, why do you spend your time writing about something you clearly hate so much?
ReplyDeleteAnd I think Dave Flemming is the best announcer the Giants have. Why? he's the most honest. He actually seems to understand that he can work for the home team,be positive, enjoy the wins, without being a homer.
ReplyDeleteBut if a Giant slumps or makes a goofball error..he calls out the player.
Kuiper and Krukow could learn from the kid.
thanks 12:36pm for correcting my misspelling. boy, a bit anal aren't we?
ReplyDeleteDarya speaks spanish? Darya loves Mexico? BOOM!..Darya goe's to the good girl list. She does have a kind of Latina chola look. Hot.
ReplyDeleteI may be a day (or 4) late and a buck short in responding here. But, having spent over a year as an INTERN covering sporting events that the talent at KGO-TV wouldn't attend, mainly Raiders and '9ers games, I completely agree with your analysis of the state of Bay Area sports media. However, we cannot just blame the monkeys that try their damnedest to read copy, fact-checked by depleted and decimated sports departments, crippled by budget cuts and ham-stringed by media consolidation. The industry, as we once knew it, is rapidly changing, constantly trying to adapt and draw in the younger audiences that will soon become our key demographic. As a writer in the blogosphere, I know that you know this. Our expectations of integrity now fall directly upon those that report to us via the corporate conduit, which is sad and unfair, because we both know that to succeed in this business we must, to some extent, curb our unruly, and often unpopular, commentary in order to keep our precious jobs, even if it means stroking the "ties" dawned by the suits that now run these enterprises. Yaddadamean? Word...
