Ed Baxter retires from KGO Radio; Update: Bristow new morning anchor

I'm getting word that Ed Baxter is retiring from KGO Radio. UPDATE: Jon Bristow is the new morning anchor.

Baxter has been at the mike for 33 years, both as reporter, PM and AM news anchor.

No word on the details, but I'm betting its only just the beginning at 900 Front for some of KGO's veterans. A pending sale from Citadel to Cumulus may have hastened Baxter's decision.

Either way, here's hoisting one to Baxter who is a good man and very good newsman, one of the last of the old-school crowd at KGO.

  2. Sadly, KGO's glory days have passed away. The City was blessed for years to have so many quality broadcasters assembled in one place. The really sad story is the sorry state of broadcasting as a whole. So many choices of things to watch and listen to has dried up the money necessary to attract quality people to an industry falling apart at the seems. Greater choice has left us with no quality in broadcasting, and sadly, we are all the lesser for it.

  6. Bristow is a GREAT choice and sounds superb as an anchor. I do not think this is a disaster at all. Quite the opposite.

  7. Ed Baxter is OK. Sometimes he displays very uptight behavior, and it made for some difficult listening.

On another note, couldn't stand Laura Garcia Cannon's bit on Prez Obama and the Queen this morning. This woman's opinion of herself is clearly higher than local early morning show anchor. What do we have to do to dump her?

  8. Good choice, Baxter's dumb jokes and stupid laughs were very irritating. Bristow is cool, brings great energy to start the day.

  9. Ed Baxter is a true professional. He had a real personality and was not a "talking head." Sorry to see him go. I have been a listener for 20 years. Now I am running out of reasons to continue. New anchors are good but not of Ed Baxter's caliber.

  10. Good riddance. He didn't retire, he was fired. In radio, when you're fired you don't get a chance to say goodbye on the air. This surly bastard "retired" just like the dunce of days gone bye, rosy allen. Edell retired. See the difference? Dean knew he would never be fired, mainly cuz of managements greed. Their greed, such as: flooding the airwaves with commercials, instead of raising their rates on their ratecard and respecting the listenership OR, hiring back Korrel and saying in essence to the world " we don't care what you hear thats offensive, as long as we can try and repair our ratings" OR, firing the truly witty and entertaining newsman, Greg Jared, because he made more money than WE deserved OR, Dr. Dean didn't want his program to turn into "the kgo lawyer whore hour." He saw the writing on the wall when Luckoff departed and didn't want to start having to do ads for Doan's pills, like the irrepressible "Loya" (Tillem) does for Pat Fitucci. It is truly graceful what kgo has become. Len's show has 50/50 content! If you disbelieve this, just time it. You have to know that kgo and tillem are splitting the lawyer referral fee's that his show generates, while we are flooded with shameless self-promotion under the guise of free legal help for the public. Maybe I'm just jealous, but I do see the day when morticians will have a show following Len's. While I'm rampaging like a rogue listener with a PPM up my rump, how about two weeks ago when a caller said he wanted to interview the petty, moRon owens about the behind the curtain scenes at kgo. The audience overwhelmingly voted for this caller (in an appearance contest) to appear on the mental runt's show, BUT kgo suddenly knew that his sample questions were unbearable, let alone what he was capable of asking. kgo announed that he couldn't make it to the studio. Yeah right. Then, moRon said in his classic "screw what the audience wants to hear from any of my guests, what I say is more important"-attitude, "geeze, I hate it, but somebody else will have to interview me. I hate talking about myself." That @xΔ¥£¿±§ob! The winner wanted to ask about the going's on at kgo, not the flotsom that pours outta that mouth with terminal incontinance, and a constipated brain to match. Make's you want to jest bitch-slap him all day

  11. +1 for good riddance, heck i might be able to go back to listening now. I gave up long ago , I could uh not uh stand uh Ed uh Baxter any uh longer. Not sure what was worse , the "uh" every other word (isnt that public speaking 101?) or the stupid lame jokes he barfed out , then laughed at them. Unfortunately every newscaster there is trying to be a comedian which none of them are.
Rosy allen - couldn't stand or wanted her opinions while she was suppose to be spouting news.
My favorite is Lynne Agenda (Jimenez). Never fails to bash big business whenever she can spin it that direction. so much talent there!

  12. What nastiness! Sounds like Repuglicans to me! To present the other side, I LOVED Ed Baxter and find just the opposite - Jon Bristow is extremely uptight and doesn't want to listen to anyone except himself, including his co-anchor, Jennifer. Jennifer and Ed had a magical connection that I hurried and turned on in the morning so I wouldn't miss anything. After Ed left, I might have turned on KGO in the morning or not. And with the recent firings, I'm listening to 740 am for my canned, superficial news.
Management of KGO, you really don't know what you've done. I'm not a listener anymore. I'll even quit listening to Pat Thurston.
