Bonds trial coverage was generally good; Local press gets it right; Oh, and my declaration of kissing the KRON steps and speedo

The Bonds verdict and trial coverage was well reported by virtually all the outlets; radio, TV and Internet play brought out opinions from the legal world to the fan base inside AT&T Park.

The usual legal experts analysis was good and decisive. KCBS' Doug Sovern got a nifty pair of actualities from former US attorney in SF, Joe Russoniello, who predicted that the government may re-try the case on the perjury charge against Bonds.

KTVU, KPIX, and KGO-TV-- KRON too, all, of course, lead with the Bonds verdict in their evening newscasts. While editors naturally went heavy with the legal experts, the ballpark reaction with fans was unusually fresh and lucid. Most of these fan reactions tend to be predictable and lame; at the park, the accounts I saw were pointed and quite interesting to hear.

The Internet, naturally, was the first outlet to report the verdict. I was on SFGate when the initial alert hit around 2: 30 or so in the afternoon. ESPN.com, Yahoo!, and all the other sites were soon to follow.

*I wrote a few weeks back that I'd "kiss the steps of KRON and run up Market to the Ferry building in a black speedo if Bonds were convicted." Technically, I was right. Bonds, after all, was convicted on one count of obstruction of justice, but the jury hung on the perjury charge.

But I'm not going to dodge the outcome. This is a media blog, but I'm actually quite surprised the jury convicted Bonds on the one count. Yes, I believed, (like many others,) that he'd be acquitted. I was wrong.

So, about that kiss and run. Tell you what. In the spirit of giving back, you all pick a date. (Tuesdays, Thursday are good for me) I'll kiss the steps, (let's hold back on the speedo for awhile) and those that attend all donate 10 bucks to Children's Hospital.

  1. Hold off on the step kissing stuff. The one count of "guilty" will most likely be thrown out by the judge after an appeal.
