New KRON anchor Waldman; 'Dr Bill--'Nuclear Reactor Expert'; Goldman to Green 960 to take Karel's spot; KTVU morale

*KRON has hired a new morning news anchor, Justine Waldman, formerly of '7News' in Boston....interesting that Waldman will now go head to head with KPIX' Frank Mallicoat, another ex Boston TV tonsil.

*'Dr Bill' Wattenburg, everybody's "expert" on the Nuclear reactor abyss in Japan. The notion that Wattenburg is everyone's "expert" on this topic A issue is pretty accurate--my problem is that the worse this gets, the more stubborn he gets.

Again, as I have stated before, Wattenburg knows what he's talking about, but even he'd have to admit that it looks as if the situation in Japan is getting more dire, so now what?

And for every "expert" that I've heard that says the public here shouldn't worry, other "experts" said "we don't know yet--'we're in uncharted territory." And that's just my point...the unknown factor. Maybe if Dr Bill were to open up to the fact that indeed, we don't know a lot here, but after all, Dr. Bill knows everything, right?

*Norman Goldman, a Seattle-based radio talk host will bring his show to Green 960 live from 3-6 PM to replace the bong show known as Karel, (who's going back to KGO on weekends.) Goldman is funny, informative, and talks about the issues of the day. He'll be a welcome addition as opposed to the all-encompassing bore known as Karel who is nauseatingly bad and jumped the shark many moons ago. The Goldman show begins March 28.

*From an KTVU staffer:  "I was not there the day Ed and Bill Martin had that blow out.. but I certainly heard about it. I've been at KTVU for more than 10 years and while there are always complaints here and there about management.. I've seen a drastic drop in morale amongst employees over the last 6 months. There is almost a sense of mean spiritedness toward workers from management (not executive producers) and upper management. KTVU is certainly not the place it used to be (most local stations aren't) .. but it's sad to watch the decline of a once venerable Bay Area local news station."

*Speaking of Karel...This line from a reader of the SF Peninsula Press Club web site speaking of the decision to let go of Marty Nemko in place of Karel:

"California has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States. KGO executives clearly wondered why anyone would want to listen to a career coach when they could hear a barely stable, always irrational, over-the-top circus act throw tantrums on the air for three hours at a time..."

Amen.

  1. Rich-- putting aside your well-known dislike of Karel you have to admit that Marty Nemko's dismissal is his own fault (do you really like Nemko!?!?!?). The reader you quote above is correct: California has over 12% unemployment and yet Nemko's show is so uninformative, boring, simplistic that even in this horrendous economy he can't keep his job as a career coach. I gave his show a chance several times and his advise would end 80% of the time by asking the caller to Google career information. I would've preferred that the position be given to Peter B. Collins; however I'll take Karel over Nemko any day. Besides, the middle-aged, white Jewish point of view at KGO is diminished by Nemko's dismissal and that's a good thing. Waaay over-represented on that station.

  2. I don't mind Karel. But this move by KGO is very sad. Marty Nemko provides a wonderful service. He is experienced and kind. Unlike some "experts" (Dr. Bill), he does not belittle those who are in need of answers.

I certainly hope KGO can find another spot for MN. What is going on at KGO?

  3. I'm no nuclear "expert", nor have I ever heard Dr. Bill claim that he's an "expert"... however, his depth and variety of knowledge is clearly self evident.

There are a limited number of scientists with his level of research knowledge. Really. Beyond his Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore Laboratory roots. He studied under Dr. Edward Teller, and was later a contemporary of Dr. Glenn Seaborg.

On the practical side, I'm sure that there are more men with his experience with heavy construction, mechanical devices, et al. But what is their educational level?

    Third, he can communicate.

Given this , you ask: "...And that's just my point...the unknown factor. Maybe if Dr Bill were to open up to the fact that indeed, we don't know a lot here, but after all, Dr. Bill knows everything, right?"

    WHAT is your concern?

Will these plants burn through to Britain? (ala China Syndrome) No.

Have harmful radiation levels reached Tokyo, or the U.S.? No.

How many people have died in Japan, from radiation? Zero?

Do you need to stock up on iodine? President Obama and scientists say No.

Knowledge is power. Use Google. Educate yourself. Empathy for Japan (donations?) might also be an option.

  6. I was unemployed most of last year, yet I could not listen to Nemko's advice. I agree with this other posters in that the problem with Nemko's Show was Marty Nemko. He had a seething anger against women and people of color that he could not hide, he was often openly hostile towards callers for whom he could discern their ethnicity ("You're African American aren't you), and his advice was often off-point. Yes, the unemployment rate is high, but there are multiple places to obtain the kind of advice Nemko gave, primarily Craigslist! Good riddance to bad company!

  7. Never heard him,but Karel sort of sounds like a cool guy. If he irritates the status quo-more power to him. He doesnt have to be right all the time-because the right(wing) are wrong ALL the time.
Justine,poor,poor,Justine-lol. You know she's thinking little cable cars that travel halfway to the stars, sourdough, and wild nighclubs,no more snow, and street's here lined with palm tree's...wait until she see's the mess at KRON.
She might do the rapping weatherman thing and say -adios KRON!

  8. Bubba will love this, from The Chronicle:

"Nuclear engineers and academics who have worked in Japan's atomic power industry spoke in interviews of a history of accidents, faked reports and inaction by a succession of Liberal Democratic Party governments that ran Japan for nearly all of the postwar period."

  9. The idea that KGO dumping Marty Nemko makes me sick. It proves to me that the fools that run KGO are clueless about the unemployment rate here in CA and the service that Nemko provides is unmeasureable.

  10. I've rarely found the quickie advice Marty Nemko dispenses on his show to be something anybody could actually run with to get a job. He does have some valuable insights about the job marketplace, but nobody could given meaningful career advice to somebody in two minutes on the radio. I'm not a big Karel fan either, but I'll find him more interesting.

  11. Bill Wattenburg drives me crazy in the way he treats callers and when he weighs in on non-science matters. But, in this situation, I think he has been one of the more responsible commentators, talking about best and worst cases, what can and can't happen. From talk radio to cable networks, much of the nonsense from both supporters and opponents of nuclear power has been awful. JW

  12. Judging from his show on 960, Karel seems to have matured somewhat as a radio host. He used to be a one note left-ie type, hopefully, his show will be more interesting than it was before the "Joe-the-plumber" remark that got him fired. I, for one, will not miss Marty Nemko. I thought he was self-absorbed and boring.

  13. Didn't listen to Marty much. Employment in California may be 12% but then again his advice is of limited interest to the other 88% who ARE employed. Bill is great, Bay Area people get their feelings hurt too easily. Didn't always agree with Dean Edell but I do miss him. He's left us to the ravages of the Jenny McCarthy's. Karel, he's a different breed of cat. Not interested.

  14. Nothing substantive concerning Karel; a walking, talking cliche.

  15. It's all about the delivery. Len Tillem's show could be an absolute bore, but his delivery, wit and actual ability to inform is excellent. Marty Nemko could learn a few things from Len. Nemko's demeanor is depressing (he himself admits it), plus it was a real turn off when he would rail against women and people of color (affirmative action) and then wouldn't have the ability to debate. He simply cut people off who disagreed with him. If anything I'm shocked he lasted as long as he did on KGO.

  16. I have mixed feelings about Karel.

But I bet he might re-consider putting all of that money into solar power for his former home.

  17. I look forward to hearing Karel again. You never knew what he would say next and that kept it interesting. I also enjoyed the high tech atmosphere he brought to KGO. Nemko was depressing which is not what I need on a weekend night.
