A's Radio daze with KTRB; As Season nears uncertainty looms, but deal will probably get done; Inside story

The A's and KTRB, (really, the bank that owns the station, Comerica,) are in a last-minute standoff as the season nears and broadcasts of the teams games are in limbo.

But are they really? Probably not, but the situation has escalated to the point where there remains considerable doubt and very little information has surfaced.

Bottom line: I think a deal will get done before the start of the season in spite of total mismanagement on BOTH sides. The A's broadcasting hierarchy, (and those who run that part of the business in the upper food chain of the org.,) should be embarrassed that it's reached this point. They have dragged their feet and allowed something as simple and necessary as a legitimate broadcast entity reach crisis stage. Yeah, it's a money deal, but its still part of business. You want to be respected and not made to look foolish? Then you need to get this done. Period. End of story.

Without knowing the entirety of the negotiations, this much can be deduced: both sides, (Comerica and the A's) thought the other would blink. The bank has more leverage at this point than the A's realized. Another thing: the A's may have reached a point where they don't necessarily want to throw a huge chunk of money at a distressed property, even one that broadcasts their baseball games.

On the other hand, it would figure that a team that is "major league" would not want to be without a radio station. What to do?

The A's could stall and try to work out a temporary deal while negotiating a deal to buy the station, (about $4-5 million, but in doing so, have to assume all the debt that has piled up with the acquisition--that could end up becoming millions and millions of dollars.)

They could also do an "LMA", and essentially pay for the time to run broadcasts and continue all  programming. But the bank may not want that deal and continue to play hardball.

Keep in mind that there's really no incentive, (other than getting dimes on the dollar) for the bank to acquiesce with the A's. The station as it currently broadcasts is severely dilapidated with tower maintenance issues, (it costs $25-$30,000 monthly alone to make sure the signal gets out.) In fact, as it now, KTRB is broadcasting at about 20,000 watts of its 50,000-watt capability. Beyond that, at night, it is barely audible in most parts of the Bay Area and that's when its on the air.

None of this could have and should haves reached this point. Exhibition games have been cancelled. The fan base is up in arms and the whole quagmire is another black mark for minority owner Lew Wolff.

In the end, I still believe a deal will get done, but I wouldn't be totally shocked if the A's were without a deal come opening night.

Said a source familiar with the dealings: "They both deserve each other."

That pretty much sums it up at this point.

  1. Lets remind the bay area that when Lew Wolff bought the A's he promised that it would be first class -all the way. He even stated "The Fisher family and I, ARE THE THIRD RICHEST OWNERSHIP GROUP IN MLB"..a quote. Now,flash to today- a MLB team that doesnt have a radio station contract, with the season starting in a few days. And with not a hint they will sell. Poor Oakland,so far from God,so close to Beane,Wolff and the Fisher family.

  2. Right now am listening online to the last A's Arizona game. Ridiculous situation. The broadcast team is better than the team negotiating the deal for the A's, it seems.

  3. They call it green-collar baseball this season.
It's amazing the level of play they achieve, considering the apalling level of owner support.

  5. Rich, If San Jose ever wants get out of the shadow of San Fran, and we DO! Build a park, we will come, we've got plenty of radio stations here in the city! If Lew thinks hes the man he is, tell MLB and the Giants, Im moving to San Jose, and ill see you in court! Lew, Reed, San Jose wants this done, do it now, or they'll move in the middle of the night to Vegas...

  6. Why are the A's even dealing with KTRB? Why can't the go to a different station?

  7. I always thought that Lew THE Wolff does not care about the fans, just himself, period! If he did he care, he would have bought the station, fixed what needed fixing and made money at the same time. All he cares about is moving the A's. Typical asshole owner.

  8. They Do Deserve each other...
What are they gonna do when the season ends??? perhaps just shut it down? They will need programing to fill in on the off season. Pries is not a program director, or much of a negotiator it would seem...Pack it up and go to Vegas or Sacto. Oakland has been 2nd rate since The Hass
    family left.

  9. Hire Mickey Luckoff to arbitrate. He knows sports broadcasting rights battles since he has dealt with 49ers and Raiders on many occasions.

  10. I could care less about the A's, what I am concerned about is how will any of this effect the status of Ken Dito's Press Box Show.?

  11. Thanks Rich for the update on the KTRB situation.

Message to A's . . . get this deal done. End of disussion.

A major league baseball team without a strong (legitimate) radio signal is a faceless sports franchise.

A strong radio station is part of a baseball team's brand.

Does Lew Wolf understand this concept?

  12. Espn should buy it and brodcast ALL the shows on it beats the dribble out of KNBR. They went downhill since they dropped Fox Sports for those sports byline shows that can put you to sleep.

  13. Can MLB take a club away from owners due to gross negligence?

  14. didn't the A's make a profit last year? even chump teams like the Pirates(+$25 million) make a profit in mlb because of the luxury tax...just buy KTRB already...

  15. The A's deserve all this bad press. Especially the morons in management and ownership. Charlie Finley would have been proud of such ineptitude!!!!
