'Hey, This is Len Tillem, K-G-O, How Come You Callin' a 'Loyer?!"
Len Tillem wants to know "why you callin' a 'loyer? And even if its justified?...."hey pal, take a deep breath, relax, don't call the cops, sit down and sip a cream soda, and be patient, OK?"
Tillem is KGO Radio's in-house "loyer", or for you and me, "lawyer." He can walk the walk and talk the talk and what began as a simple attorney advice program crammed away on the weekends has now become ingrained on the weekday live circuit, (from 1-2 PM, M-F and 4-7 PM, (repeats,) on Sunday.)
Tillem is straight talk, no-nonsense "This is what you have to do, caller"-radio performed like a true tactician, a sort-of "smash-mouth"-audio ballet coming at you full speed. It helps that Tillem, who sounds a little bit like a NY deli owner with one foot out the door, is funny, at times bordering on hilarious and knows he's found a niche in the market and is enjoying it. It's a shame KGO doesn't doesn't give him extra time, maybe a two-hour show, but that's for another topic.
Tillem can be blunt and even controversial. He took a lot of flack last year, for example, when he'd suggested a caller poison her neighbor's Pit Bull, (he later apologized,) but even then that's what you get when you hear Tillem. He's about as PC as Scarface after two drinks. And that is why we listen. Talk about radio with an edge.
"Len, my boyfriend keeps cheating me and uses up my credit cards, but I'm still in love with him--what should I do? Tillem: "Marcie, GET RID OF THE GUY--He's a CREEP!"
A prediction: sooner or later Tillem is going to go the syndication route ...sort of a legal Dr. Edell, with just a more oompth amount of energy and east-coast vibe that I'm certain will resonate in other parts of the country as well as the Bay Area.
And get this: Tillem himself may need a loyer to negotiate the contract. (Yo, Lenny, I want a cut.)

Tillem is the best thing going at KGO. The one drawback is that on weekends he is not live as much as he used to be. On more than one occasion I’ve heard him say on air that he needs the days off on weekends. I am certain the reason he does not do more than 1 hour on weekdays is because he still practices law and does not have the time. I’d certainly welcome two daily hours of the lawyer!
ReplyDeleteThe best hour on local radio. I don't listen as often since he moved from the noon time slot. Have his ratings slipped?
ReplyDeletepoisoning a dog..is a felony.
ReplyDeleteI miss Len. I haven't been able to listen to him since he was moved from the noon hour. Since I don't listen to the hack-y noon news on KGO, and with Gene Burns gone, I'm doing to listening to KGO less than 3 hours (Ronn Owen, but even he's getting somewhat lame). Wow, what a downward slide KGO is on; it's very sad.
ReplyDeleteLen Tillem ROCKS! Practical advice and funny... a great combination.
ReplyDeleteLen does go live one weekend a month. Always entertaining to listen to. I hope you're right about syndication - that would be great for him!
ReplyDeleteRich:
ReplyDeleteI think you meant why ya callin a loy-A...at least thats how it sounds over the airwaves..
I have nurtured a secret crush on Len for years.
ReplyDeleteI moved to Portland, Oregon in 2009 and listen to the Loyer everyday online. Thank God for the internet
ReplyDeleteLen Tillem and Gene Burns are the only things that make KGO these days. Ron Owens is tired. His fake laugh is so obnoxious. Gene Burns -- can't wait until he's back. But Len -- love him. I download his podcasts from iTunes if I miss his show. Love it.
