Hey, did you hear it might snow in the Bay Area? I mean, it might snow...Really? snow?

For the better part of five days, weather people and giddy alleged news people, (or whatever constitutes news people these days) have inundated the Bay Area masses with stories about the likelihood of it snowing down near sea level. Fine. Only logical given its been 35 years since it snowed in SF and yes, that's certainly newsworthy.

But, as usual with some of the flunkies here, the "it's-gonna-snow" story count has reached epic proportions. I hate to keep picking on KGO radio, but the morning news team, and one particularly gruesome giddy, gee-whiz news reader has gone overboard with endless chirps and over-the-top back and forths with Lloyd Lindsey Young. Nauseating at best.

The TV people have been just as guilty. I gather there's a ton of live trucks hunkering down right about now near Twin Peaks and San Bruno Mountain. Praying. Ditto a few news directors and assignment editors.

I'm certain the radio cars are out in force too near Mt. Diablo. By the way, did you hear it might snow?

The East Coast is probably laughing at us, not that we should care, but seriously, we're talking about what the experts say could amount to about an inch, if that, and most of it will be damn near the "higher elevations."

It's one thing if there was six inches in front of the Powell/Market cable-car go-around, but an inch? If that?

Oh please.

By the way, did you hear it may snow?

  1. You should be in Portland. We had a light snow this a.m. and all three network affiliates preempted the network morning news shows (except hour 4 of Today) for endless coverage of reporters standing in the snow, looking at the snow, touching the snow. The HD pics were great but it reminded me of the "team overage" in LA and SF whenever it rains. The message is that local news sucks no matter what market you're in.

  2. I was in eleventh grade in Concord when it snowed back in 75 or 76. They had to let us out of school because most of us had never seen snow before. It is kind of a big deal, Rich,. Be nice.

  4. It will be nice to have "Reporter Fill-in-the-Blank" report from the Bay Area rather than the usual Blue Canyon if it does snow.

It IS a big deal around these parts. We did get some in Dec. 2009, first time since 75/76.

  6. I'm kind of a weather buff..and the lows predicted arent enough to make snow at sea level. Its more of a case of soooo clooose...so lets make a big deal its possible...but real weather people know thats its only likely at high peaks..and most years they get a dusting anyways.

  8. The snow in the Bay Area would be a huge deal not just becuase it's so long since the last real snowfall (although Clayton did have snowfall last year). Remember the areas that get snow often have PLOWS and sand trucks. Overall the Bay Area doesn't have these. Each county may have a few graders, CALTRANS has a few plows on their trucks, but most cities are not set, there are not many 4x4 tow trucks, and most Fire Depts and Police Depts don't have many vehicles to handle the snow. Plus, most ambulances are not ready for it............so add that up and it's a VERY BIG DEAL.

  11. They've sure taken the fun out of it by harping on it for days. We woke up to it in the 50's 60's and '76, and it was a wonder to behold. No more mystery now, just hype. Oh BTW, it's Friday.... hohum.... Have a nice day.

  14. Christina Loren does have guts.. And she's been right down to the minute on this system... Even went against the national weather service early on, and now they are matching her forecast. Yes she is hot... But she really is a weather geek.
