KNBR has its annual Giants Fanfest all day Saturday--a feel-good time for fans to get warm and fuzzy with the players and season-ticket holders to rub shoulders, eat well, and schmooze with some of knibbers' show hosts, with the exception of one, Damon Bruce.
"I'm incredibly disappointed not to be a part of 'Fanfest", Bruce told his listeners. A few callers tried to get him to be more specific but Bruce wouldn't bite. Probably a good business decision. But in reality, here's the deal.
I think this is a "Larry Baer thing", with a smidgen of GM Lee Hammer who likes to keep clients and his amen corner happy. A little payback perhaps for a guy who called out the Giants from time to time over the years and had the audacity to, oh, heaven forbid, criticize various Giants moves. Yeah, so the Giants won the World Series and everybody is still going bonkers, but the Giants never forget. You're either WITH us or AGAINST us and more times than not, Bruce refused to tow the company/KNBR line, thus he was sentenced to Noon-4PM on KNBR 1050, knibber's little sister of the poor, (where ratings have improved and there actually is a decent show as opposed to Rudy and the arrogant one on 680.)
Just another day at the office at 55 Hawthorne where interns do updates, sound drops are inserted as gags that are more manufactured than Dolly Parton's boobs, and oh yes, don't fuck with the Giants.

Bruce must really be upset,because he HAS towed the company line lately,softened his criticisms of anybody local.He even went on to say not too long ago that Bob Fitzgerald is a friend of his. When Bruce first went to 1050-he called Fitz and Brooks liars and shills..

Most of the shows on 680 are as much of a joke as those advertisements (commercials) stating that 680 is the best Sports Station in the Nation??? Since when??? I wonder how many would listen on Satellite Radio. Damon obviously got the shaft. Anyone wanna chant for DAMON, when the shills are on the air on SATURDAY?

ReplyDeleteRadnich as we all know invented why he wasn't at the Giants parade..never saying that he crossed Baer by picking the Phillies and Texas to beat the Giants. They didnt want him there ,just as they dropped him from the W.S. pre and postgame shows on Comcast.
Thats how KNBR operates and Lee Hammer operates. It continues you might have noticed with Joe Lacob who has weirdly more than once "jokingly" told Radnich that Lacob has his job in his hand,making Radnich sweat on live TV.
The one original thought Patrick Connor has said on air-that "KNBR employees are full of self loathing"..I do beleive.I truly do.
Too bad, he's the one guy I'd listen to at that event.

I've known Damon for four years and even though he won't say it; knbr has been screwing w/ him for the last two plus that he'd admitted, eventually, they'll part ways down the road and he will be a great journalistic and broadcaster in another market. His stardom will rise and we in the bay area will be the poorer for it. Sad, when a journalist can't be impartial and criticize. Why does Ralph stay when all he does is hit Brian sabean w/ question after question.

journalist??? you have got to be kidding...no matter the talent level of any of these sports talk guys (some are very good, some very bad) they are not journalists. do not confuse broadcaster and journalist

ReplyDeleteDamon Bruce is fighting the curse of Larry Kruegar...Felipe Alou called Kruegar = Satan-like after Kreuger referred to Pedro Feliz and his countrymen as Brain-dead-slop-swinging Caribeans etc. Damon once worked at KNBR prior to his current gig. DBruce is part Pete Franklin, Scott Ferrel and JT the brick. He had (past tense) a bad habit of agreeing with any caller who had a pretty good comment. The Giants did not care for his post Giant game comments. Even when they won in 2009 he would find something to bitch about which became self serving.
ReplyDeleteKNBR has done the SAME thing in the last three weeks with Mychael Urban. Instead of asking Urban to tweak his pregame show style (getting rid of Father Lincecum and Zito) they just lopt him off their show and web site - even WHILE losing Santangelo to the Washington Nationals. Bruce is probably in and out of their doghouse due to the fact that Urban is a regular on the Damon Bruce show.
Bring back the Fabulous Sports Babe or Cass Centeno...
Where is the story on exactly what a disgusting individual Baer is (and what an embarrassment he should be to the Giants)? It seems to be common knowledge, but no one will talk about it, even outside KNBR?
