Sports Media Flash: Urban OUT at KNBR

Urban tweeted that KNBR GM, Lee Hammer, didn't like his weekend show. While I have had my differences with some of Urban's shtick, (notably the Barry Zito personal connection,) I thought he was mildly interesting.

He will continue his cable gig at Comcast SportsNet Bay Area where he serves as a Giants "Insider."

Marty Lurie. Early speculation as a replacement for Urban:

  1. Lurie reminds me of a WalMart greeter. Skilled retired guy who, if younger, could get a mainstream job but working at Walmart is better than sitting at home doing nothing.
Being on the radio talking baseball is the only place he can do it, having bored his family and friends to death already.

  2. Whoever posted the above comment, I couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, someone is stupid enough to put him on the air. I wish he was still a practicing lawyer and not in the media...what a blowhard!

  3. Urban get rid of the earring, that look was cool in 80s, in junior high!

  4. Mychael was so-so but Marty is great. Love listening to him. The departure of FP is good news as well. That guy was AWFUL - stick to the frat house.

  5. I'd rather listen to Marty Lurie than having Mychael Urban do his childish nonsense that "you will only understand if you tune in every week" (or so he said). You know, I actually liked Urban when he was doing postgame sportsphone, but then he started taking himself too seriously and felt the need to add the Unicorn Hour and all this other nonsense that NOBODY is waiting for. Just stick to talking ball Urban, that's what you do on CSN and that's where I don't mind you as much ;-)

  6. FP was a jock buffoon who liked to hear his own voice talk about his visits to titty bars and the playboy mansion. What a jerk - good riddance.

Mychael needs to: Learn how to spell his name correctly and take out the stupid earring.

Marty Lurie: I love him for about 2 hours.

  7. Urban was tall for radio.

  9. I thought Urban was fine...far better than Damon Bruce. But I will have no problems with Marty "The Iron Man" Lurie if that's the direction that KNBR chooses to go. I still miss Bruce MacGowan and his manner and knowledge of baseball history....Marty fills in nicely in this regard as well!

  10. In a year and a half I'll expect FP back at KNBR telling how much he loves the Bay Area and how he wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I'm sorry Mychael will be gone because it means no more tag-teaming with Patrick Conner.

Marty Lurie: I start getting bored after the 6th hour.

  11. I didn't care for the Zito schtick either, otherwise I really enjoyed Mychael's
approach to reporting, I will miss Him... really liked most of FP's stuff and his energy... Marty's laid back, easy go'n style is a polar opposite to FP, but
Ya can't fault Marty's knowledge or memory.

  12. Good riddance to Mychael and FP!!! Thank you KNBR!

  13. Mychael's problem was that he wasn't either homer enough or controversial enough. He had that middle ground which is too boring for KNBR. I can't stand any of their hosts, personally. I don't listen often except during baseball season when I'm too lazy to change the station in my car when the Giants aren't on. Mychael was not offensive, but yes, he was boring. Though on the other hand, he's been on there for years and they just noticed they weren't happy with him now?

  15. There's a young guy at Comcast Sports named Mike Landolino. He's behind the scenes now, but man, he would make an AMAZING show host. Knowledge, great personality, fun dude! He BELONGS on KNBR! Have tryouts and let the audience choose who gets the job! I bet the house it will be Mike!!!

  16. He didnt say "I love Lee Hammer enough".

  17. no more unidork hour, too bad....and no more zito talk ever...priceless...good riddance to 2 turds, fp and urban...get rid of zito while yer at it!

  18. Take away the Chris Lincecum and Unicorn stuff and Urban was knowlegeable compared to others. IMO I will miss how articulate he was and how he presented his knowledge of baseball from a now non-jock point of view.
