KNBR Makes Fun of Al Davis, but Forgets DeBartolo Mess

Predictably, the "Sports Leader"/KNBR and some of its assorted tonsils made fun of the Al Davis Show Tuesday. No surprise.

Keep in mind KNBR is the flagship station of the 49ers so there's a bit of a rhyme and reason here.

Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert spent the better part of their four-hour show mocking Davis and continued the pattern with phonos with Scott Ostler, Ann Killion and Tim Kawakami.

Barbieri has never liked Davis which is his right. He derided him and went on and on...we have heard this countless times.

Regardless of what you think about Davis, (and there's a lot to make fun of, laugh, pity, whatever) seems he's still standing. Maybe at this stage of his life he doesn't care what anybody thinks about him.

To the point, the Knibber tonsils, all the while tearing apart the statements of an 81 year-old man, fail to mention the many noted blunders of the team across the bay in SF.

Jed York is riding high now with the Jim Harbaugh hire. Good for him.

*Did Barbieri forget York's uncle, Eddie DeBartolo's infamous involvement with the corrupt ex-Louisiana Gov., Edwin Edwards and his eventual ratting out of his gambling buddy?

*Did he forget about Debartolo's tacky "he's gone", (referring to ex-OC, Marc Trestman,) at the Steve Marriucci presser?

*Did he forget about some unsavory rumors of a DeBartolo alleged incident involving a Peninsula waitress in the mid 1990's?

I wonder why Ralph never seems to mention the latter when he so frequently rips into Mr. Davis?

This pattern is nothing new with KNBR. It has always annoyed many Eastbay listeners with its, at best, indifference with the 510/925 side of the bay, and at worst, its complete non-coverage of the A's and Raiders.

Then again, it's KNBR. Should we all be that surprised? And frankly, should we care?

  1. Al Davis made a fool of himself yesterday. There is no way around it. No one told him to get up there and say what he did. Was there a reason to get up there and turn the press conference into a Tom Cable slam session? I really feel bad for Hue and his family that they had to sit through that on perhaps the most important day of his professional career.

Al looked just as ridiculous as his did during the Lane Kiffen overhead projector incident.

  2. The morning show was giving it to Al,creepy background music as he talked. First though, where was that when Cohan was ripping off the government as a tax cheat? Where was the background religious music when Singletary did his weekly preaching? KNBR only gets disrespectful with people who don't make them money-like President Obama. Well,Obama does make tham money, only those right wing idiots at KNBR don't realize it.
Of the two-Al Davis is far away the less evil then KNBR.

  3. Thanks again Rich for validating my departure from listening to KNBR. I'm not happy with Al Davis but I am not acting like the immature punks on KNBR who insult him and are way too personal about it.

  4. How dare you knock the station that just promoted Eric (David Lee Roth) Brynes to FP Santangelos sports host position?
Brynes who's last speil that I heard was an hour of how unfair fans and media have been to the wonderful Alex Smith is apparently the ideal demographics of KNBR listeners- mostly Louts and dummys. All the rest with I.Q.'s over 90 are back to change channels when guests are not Lowell Cohn or maybe Kawakami.
Now if Brynes brings in JP Snow to co -host,then we have a Spicoli surfer dudes like SNL sketch conversation to wear down brain cells of the suffering audience.
And,since Burns stole millions from the Diamondbacks and Mariners,I guess he's a volunteer. WHO would really pay him to talk? THAT's Crazy!

  7. I thought the morning show was easy on him. Give a listen to DBruce this afternoon if you want to get your pants in a wad.

  8. there are plenty of us East Bay Raider fans who are making fun of Mister Davis too (along with people/media in the north and south bay and peninsula, to go with the national ridicule). btw, all these coaches that Davis has let go saying how awful they are - what do they all have in common - ALL were hired by Davis!!! What genius! The real Al Davis disappeared long ago. Something as predictable as KNBR making fun of Al Davis? How about Rich Lieberman making fun of KNBR. Just because it is predictable, in both cases, doesn't mean it is wrong.

  9. The biggest joke about KNBR is Radnich saying the Bay Area audience is smarter than than the rest of the country. It is that kind of Bay Area, particularly SF smugness that perpetuates this crap passing for good radio.

  10. Damon doesnt get it about Davis. If Al was was any other way he would complain of the corporate sameness, detached firing-at least Al spoke like a human. And for what he paid Cable over 2 1/2 years-over 4 million, some change of history re telling is understandable by a 81 year old,and forgiveable. If Tom felt Al was costing him money,he could have quit!
And back to Rich's point-It's the two faced treatment by KNBR hypocrites thats the topic. Its predictable too. There isnt another station in the bay area as dishonest as Lee Hammers KNBR. He's the scum of local radio..

  11. Sure Davis is an old fool, but let him start winning and he becomes the wise fool. DeBartelo gets a pass just as long as his team wins. When he started losing and then had his troubles at Menlo Park's Brittish Banker's Club and well with the known criminal Edwin Edwards (Democrat), then we heard all about the bad stuff.

  12. What? DeBartolo's problems with the law were topic #1 on KNBR, WHEN IT WAS RELEVANT.
What does any of yesterday's "Coach Introduction" turned Cable bashing have to do with DeBartolo's problems 10 or so years ago?
I wish Al Davis spoke to the press more often, that was some good stuff.

  13. Could not agree more;Barbieri is a sanctimonious slob.I'd rather be waterboarded than listen to him; a hypocrite and a phony.

  14. It was even funnier (sadder?) when you realized that Ralph and Tom were ripping on Al Davis without ever hearing the Press Conference. How responsible is that? Ralph could have just played the tape of the other 300 times he has ripped Al Davis.

  15. For my 2 cents you are right Rich. Mr. Davis should have realized that there is a time, and a place for everything. Yesterdays introduction of Hue Jackson was not the time, or the place, to air his Grievances against Tom Cable.

Having said that, you can not take away all what Al Davis has contributed to the NFL over the years. Yes, he is old, frail, and in bad health, but much of what he says regarding the NFL is true. As a 49er Fan, I took note of when Mr. Davis said that the Harbaugh hire may not work for the 49ers. And its true...the hiring of Harbaugh could go either way, good, or bad. Its a 50/50 deal, and could be a risky hire.

Where I have an issue with you Rich is when you talk about the 49ers Problems. Ed DeBartolo, who did have problems, is history with the 49ers. You would have been better served talking about the current ownership, that has been inept for the past 13 years. Decision, after decision, has been wrong, wrong, wrong. And now with the hiring of Harbaugh, (who btw is a step in the right direction,) as far as KNBR, and other Local Media is concerned...all is forgiven with the idiot York Family. Scott Ostler even had the audacity to call Jed York a "Genius." I say bull-crap.

    True?

  17. I feel like a better, happier, and smarter person now that I haven't listened to ONE second of KNBR in over six months.

    What a bunch of losers.

  18. The only thing I listen to anymore is Tony Bruno's half hour with that loudmouth bore Radnich. Even that can get annoying when Gary is in interrupt mode which happens more often when he's feeling insecure.
