Layoffs lurking at San Jose Merc

Dean Singleton's Mercury News management is threatening layoffs, according to the San Jose guild. A four-month freeze on the accrual of vacation time and the ability to impose a one-week unpaid furlough are the major concessions management is seeking. (Nice holiday timing, Mr. Singleton)

Reminds me of a story a Southbay writer told to me recently: within three years, maybe sooner, there will be only one major daily newspaper in the Bay Area. That's 1. Of course, with the newspaper biz still bleeding considerable amounts of red ink, that's not too surprising.

Singleton's Mercury News is part of the BANG network.

  1. And Dean and every other failing or failed business and owner voted for 8 years of George Bush. They voted for less goverment regulations and now they spend time covering their shop windows with butcher paper.
And the Republicans have the nerve to say after the man nearly sent us into a Depression-"Oh,I guess thats George Bush's fault" They spin the real blame he deserves the same way they made him a war hero while they painted a true decorated hero like John Kerry as a phony!
The news business can now enjoy the FOX news standard of spin, bottom line partisonship, and blond news bunnys.
And goes for the GMs of KRON,KNTV,and KNTV too.
