The State of KRON; 'Mgt. Wears You Down'; Turmoil at 1001 Van Ness

At KRON, the relationship between management and the working rank and file-- including many of the reporters, a few anchors, and most newsroom personnel is at an all-time low.

Take accounts like this, for example, from a former staffer, (who, like all others requested anonymity out of fear of mtg. retaliation.)

"For nearly every individual who works there, it feels like a constant lose-lose situation; morale is the lowest of any place I've ever seen and management is more disliked than any place I've ever worked, PERIOD."

There's a lot more, with the brunt of the toxic situation aimed directly at GM Brian Greif, News Director, Aaron Pero, and assistant news director, Stacey Baier.

Said one of three independent sources:

"The biggest problem at KRON is management--
If you push for balance, they yell at you publicly.
If you disagree with their stance, they make an example of you.
If you attempt to retain your dignity, they will go out of their way to humiliate you."

That last comment is indicative of the constant word I get, both in direct communication and word from those inside the building who fear for their jobs if they dare go on the record. And just when things tend to calm down and the situation(s) seems to have been diffused, comes word that things are only getting worse.

Try this:
"While I worked there I saw multiple instances in which people were advised that the floor was open to opinions, and in each and every case where somebody voiced their opinion, management took it upon themselves to single that person out, criticize them and insult them in front of their coworkers. Then, after everybody had gotten the message, they yelled at us for not speaking up or having anything to offer during meetings...

People who work in that office are now just trying to keep their heads above water. The overall atmosphere is terrible, and management has everybody exactly where they want them: nobody knows what's happening and has no sense of security, so they're just trying to survive in the hopes that things get better. When a news director will publicly state that he thinks all reporters are useless and a general manager will walk into a newsroom and "jokingly" ask if anybody needs to be fired that day, people are just desperate to keep their heads down and retain their livelihoods."

One can reasonably assume that a case of ex-worker disgruntlement is at place here, but not when you see it coming from people still working there and just trying to "make it."

Constant word from several insiders reveal an atmosphere where some of KRON's notable on-air "stars" gets extreme preferential treatment at the expense of staffers who have been laid out to dry and humiliated at any and all costs.

Again, they all express a feeling of desperation and complete retaliation from their bosses, who, they say, take matters to the extreme if they sense anyone trying to rock the boat. A few have been called into the office and told matter of fact NOT to talk to me.

A prominent morning personality, Darya Folsom, is universally loathed by many inside the newsroom. Repeated stories of her influence over Pero range from "unusually high" to outright over the top
.
From another source with direct knowledge of the situation and is familiar with the goings-on at KRON:

"A few months back, national Young bigwigs demanded some focus groups for all of the "news" shows due to the dismal ratings. I'm not sure what happened with the evening shows, but after working on the morning shows the results we had access to all pointed towards viewers HATING Darya Folsom. Routine comments included "too loud," "abrasive" and many people asked why she was always shouting. Following those tests, Darya was told to "tone it down." She became angry and sullen in the office. Darya is once again resorting to complaining to Pero whenever she is asked to alter her performance or work well with others. He is once again allowing her to behave poorly, including yelling and blaming producers for her mistakes and picking and choosing when she will participate in staff meetings and important discussions. And most of the changes made because of those tests have been abandoned; management simply sees no need to alter their own plans for any reason. Darya also strong-armed Pero into canceling vacation time scheduled by other morning anchor James Fletcher. Fletcher had planned a Thanksgiving getaway with his family and scheduled the time off early in the summer. A few weeks back Darya decided she wanted to take that week off and demanded Pero inform Fletcher that he would have to cancel his plans. To say the least, Fletcher was upset and offended."

And there's more:

"The Morning Executive Producer recently quit, with no other jobs or opportunities lined up. In her final months at the station it wasn't uncommon for her to find herself in the ND or GM's office multiple times a week to be screamed at for things she had no control over - most often technical problems. In other words, she was finding herself being screamed at for SKYPE not working properly or the shoddy vans not being able to send out a signal. She was unqualified for the position in the first place, but she was never put in the spot to improve the show or come up with new ideas; they only wanted somebody to parrot the insulting comments from above."

While Greif and Pero were the source of much of the anxiety, Baier, the assistant news director, was outed as a notable instigator. Again, all the talk from the sources seem to indicate that Baier enjoys her limited power and likes to, apparently, make people uncomfortable:

"Baier had never worked in news prior to her job at KRON. She was hired by Brian Greif, who had dated her previously and thought she'd be great at making people's lives miserable. On the same day Transportation Reporter Mark Jones left because they tried to cut his salary drastically, Baier insulted somebody's clothing choice and declared that she would never wear jeans that weren't designer-made and expensive. She's a class act, and is loathed by everybody who interacts with her."

Keep in mind that these comments are from individuals who either currently work at KRON, have worked there and/or others whose comments have been checked for veracity. They were all consistent with other communications I have heard over the years.

Greif gets first price for universal loathing by most of the news staffers.

"He, (Greif) is, hands-down, the most smug, arrogant asshole I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. I am quite certain he had a miserable childhood and is spending his adult life trying to get revenge on the world by treating every single person he meets like total garbage."

And that's the just the least lethal thing heard about Greif; I think you get the picture.

Finally from one of the sources who left KRON recenly:

"At this point everybody who works at KRON considers management to be bullies. And they live up to that reputation pretty well. Even in this terrible economy, it was quite a relief to get out of that place. When I see my former coworkers they often say I look relaxed and peaceful now that I don't have to listen to all that nonsense."

  1. We always used to joke that KRON was a sinking ship, well it sounds like it has finally and firmly hit the bottom of the deepest underwater trench.

  2. Sounds like Pero is shtupping good ol' "There's only two good things about you" Darya...

  3. Wow! There was always a lot of hinting without naming names with your past stories on KRON, Rich, but there it all is. Warts and all.

Even if these quotes are from the disgruntled, at the very least, it shows they've got some unhappy people leaving KRON. Or are they now happy because they have left?

Every work place has its dirty laundry but bad abrasive management and managers getting the job due to relationships with other managers is never a recipe for good business.

This station has fallen so far in 10 years.

  4. Actually before you even mentioned Darya months ago-I figured she was " certain male management's best freind" since others who out do her in every way are gone, but she stays. Same for Radnich without the intimacy.I think his whole " I will jump for management and turn my back on co -workers in an instant to stay here" is why they dont care he's become Gary Limbaugh.
Part of that email from an insider that Patrick Connor read- to Radnich's consternation- was of how Radnich isn't co worker friendly and would never even take a " team KRON " photo unless paid extra. Whoever wrote that knows him. And like Radnich always says "judge him by people who know him"...

  5. That is the ugliest description of a workplace I've ever read.... I'll try an remember it next time I start bitching about my job.

It's odd, I had Greif critique some of my work when he was Young's sort of in house consultant... and I found him constructive and helpful, and a lot of people I respect thought highly of him. Granted this was a number of years ago and only one encounter... but I'm finding it hard to square that memory with the monster described here. Guess I'll remember that next time I try and make up my mind about someone I've only met a couple of times.

  6. Suprised how delicately you danced around the open secret regarding the New Dir. and Morning Anchor. Knowing people "in the bldg", I can actually say, as horrible as your story reads, it is even worse than described. Hard to imagine the once mighty station could sink much lower. What a terrible way to earn a living.

  7. If it is actually true that managers are yelling and screaming at employees then they are in pure violation of California labor laws. Employees should be vigilant and record some of these encounters whenever possible; emails should be rounded up too. Providing evidence at a court hearing will not only bring down KRON management big time, but the company as well (think $$$ with lots and lots of zeros added!)

Having moved to southern Calif. about 10 years ago, I had the opportunity to recently return to the Bay Area for a visit. I tuned in KRON and what a disappointment it is today. It looks like one of those amateurish local cable public access channels -- what a hoot and an industry joke!

  8. As a sidebar, I refer you to Scott Adams’ op-ed in the November6 Wall Street Journal. It is entitled, “The Perfect Stimulus - Bad Management”. A cautionary tale, to be sure, but too late for 1001 Van Ness, I’m afraid….

  9. It's been about 10 years since I've set foot in a couple of the news stations in the Bay Area. I haven't missed them at all. In my experience, they were some of the worst places I ever worked and, thankfully, I no longer put them on my resume. There are a lot of good, hard-working people under the hood at these stations and it's too bad that upper management generally takes a huge dump on them.

  10. As I said in my previous post on this website, "It is a travesty whats has happened to KRON." KRON used to be our San Francisco NBC Affiliate, until the San Jose Channel 11 ABC Affiliate took over for them.

I strongly believe that the ABC Affiliate in San Jose, at the time should have gotten the now KRON programming. Because like I said before, I'm not interested in the South Bay's current events...Example, as reported by KNTV ch.3, "A new Ross Store opened in Downtown San Jose"...

We the consumer are NOT being well served by the change of these 2 news outlets. San Jose = Suburban, San Francisco = Metropolitan City, and Internationally know.

As for the KRON news Politics, and going ons at the work place, I feel sorry for people like Pam Moore. Pam Moore, and a few other people at The KRON news outlet are Professionals. The rest in demeanor, and dress come off as less than Professional

  12. I still work in this market, else I would express complete agreement with "universally loathed" and point out the "influence" referred to was flagrant adultery starting in 2004.

  13. I'm one of the fortunate ones who worked at KRON under Chronicle Broadcasting ownership. The phrase "different as night and day" doesn't even begin to describe what's happened since Young acquired the station.

It is a tragedy of the highest proportions--not only for those who work at 1001 Van Ness, but also for a Bay Area market that was once so well-served by KRON and is now served a diet rich in crap, daily.

I have many friends who still work in that building. They are good, talented, experienced broadcasters. If there's any justice on the planet, they'll someday be able to again share their talents with an audience that's been robbed by the scumbags who run Young Broadcasting.

  14. Unfortunately, KRON management sounds depressingly like the management at the non-media company where I work.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Its not just that KRON mgmt plays by their own rules--- the most unfortunate factor in this is that nothing is being done to them, even by this very publicly humiliating website. Do you see Young big-wigs yanking Pero, Baier, Hitch and Grief out of there? NO. Obviously they could care less. Morale starts at the top and if Young doesn't even seem to care what is going on inside the 4 floors of this station then there truly is no hope for KRON staffers. The only thing they can do is quit and move on. At any other station, the entire lot of managers would be yanked and the station re-focused.
And in regards to the Radnich comment how he "turns his back on coworkers". Totally untrue. When I worked at KRON I thought he would have been the biggest ego-driven blow-hard but he is 100% sincere. Don't spread rumors if you don't know him. On the other hand, management's rumors on this board are all true and then some.

  16. Why is no action being taken on the station's news managers? From what I am reading this is a gross form of inappropriate organizational behavior. How does a GM, News Director, Assistant News Director all stay in power if this BS is going on? People are quitting with no jobs to go to!

  17. Speaking of preferential treatment at KRON,not a couple of weeks ago Radnich was doing a story on JaMarcaus Russell's tryouts with the Washington redskins. When he got to the part of his known use of "purple drank"-Radnich turned to Jacky the weather person and -live- said "you must have done that, you lead a fast life, with drugs and all" She was floored. Mouth agape she said she's never experimented(as Radnich also said) with Codeine, purple drank or any kind of drugs. He persisted like an obnoxious jerk until getting back to his sports.
NOW,you tell me how one person could verbally abuse another one air, stating that she led or leads a fast drug fueled life..and not be reprimanded or suspended?
If your pro management all the way is how.

  18. This is all true. I worked there for several years and dealt with all of it. The worst of the bunch are Stacy Baier and Brian Greif. They treat people so badly ..sometimes I felt like I was in a movie and they were playing the over the top ridiculous bad people ..who were put there to make people cry. They were so terrible and mean. Just absolute 100% HORRIBLE people. I would love to be a fly on the wall when Kharma gets them back. I just don’t believe the universe lets you get away with being that rotten. It has to come back to you.
The funny thing is Baier really has absolutely no idea how much she sucks. She doesn’t know what she is doing. She has no news sense. She proof reads scripts written by 30 year veterans and tries to rip them apart. It’s pitiful. She “dated” Grief and then he hooked her up with the job. I don’t think she realizes it, but everyone in the station..and at other stations too, makes fun of her and knows full well how she got the job. I feel sorry for her. I remember one time people were pitching stories and the tragic murder of Chauncey Bailey came up, and she blurted, “No ..that is not news worthy!..No one is going to care about that!” This Bitch. How dare she say that. God it was like swimming through cancer every day to get through it. Then she would haul off and just scream at people for no good reason in attempts to humiliate them in front of the entire news room. How that place didn’t get sued more..I will never know.
Greif says things to other managers like..”Lets go out there and scare people.” Well here is some news for you Horse Face. They are scared just lookin at you. You aren’t scary..you are awkward. Real awkward..and everyone knows your shtick..you find young girls out at bars..and tell them , I’ll hook you up with a job. No experience necessary. Meantime, So many talented journalists got the ax there. So sad.
For all of you who are still there…get out. The transition will be hard at times..but all the money in the world isn’t worth being treated like that. You don’t deserve it. You are too wonderful.

  19. For those wondering why these people stay... Young's Broadcasting is still dealing with bankruptcy, i worked there a few years ago and I still get Bankruptcy updates every now and then. I am sure they are loath to get rid of anyone before their contract is up.

The morale was really low even back in 2006. After one month there I had half a dozen people tell me to get out as soon as possible because it would only hurt my career to have KRON on the resume.

For those criticizing Radnich, that is really unfair. The guy is really one of the nicest on-air talents i have been around, and i have worked with MANY folks.

I really wish Young would sell KRON. The building at 1001 is amazing, it would be exciting what a station could do with a dynamic direction.

  20. how unfotunate ... as an ex-kronite, i cant tell you just how terrible i feel about the demise of what was once acknowledged by tv insiders as one of the best local stations in the country. the current management needs to be arrested and tried before a panel of "real" journalists. what a shame. so many talented people were forced out!

  21. I've worked at several radio and TV stations over the years, and even some tiny hodunk stations inundated with 20 year old employees were in many ways run better than the current KRON newsroom. Having been at KRON in both its glory days and the dark ages (now), it is indeed very sad to see how far we have fallen. There are still many smart and talented people at KRON who do the best with what they have to work with. However, the berating and condescension of employees has eroded morale to an all time low.

A smart manager knows it's a good idea to surround themselves with even smarter employees who have much to offer. Some, however, attempt to hide their own ignorance by tearing down talented people and hiding behind corporate jargon. Do these people not realize how transparent they are? At some point, they will probably just become dreadfully boring characters lacking in any kind of insight, but right now three of them are that dangerous combination of "powerful" and ignorant, recklessly wielding their swords over good people's lives.

May I respectfully suggest a big piece of Humble Pie this Thanksgiving, Ms. Assistant News Director? You could cut in into thirds and share it with your cohorts. Will this small cast of characters eventually find some of their own character and integrity? Time will tell. I'll shut up now so they can savor the pie.

  23. Another KRON staffer able to authenticate every. Single. Testament. About Pero, Darya, Baier, & Grief. Management is abusive, shallow, and the women in charge slept with the men they rule.

Pam & Gary are true pro's suffering for their pay in a tight market as are those of us who staff with them.

Management is vicious, vindictive and vapid. Young Broadcasting should be ashamed.

Hang in there Crew! It will get better when we go Country and move to the New Building.

  24. As a former Kron-vict, I can attest that everything Rich writes about is true. Only 10 times worse. I now work in a different market, and when they heard I was from KRON, the first thing they asked is, "Is the ND still sleeping with the morning anchor?" After all, this is the news business and word travels fast. It is almost too embarrassing to put KRON on my resume.
And we all know how Baier got her job. She is by far, one of the STUPIDEST people I have ever met, in or out of the business. (Now she will probably go into her office and stick pins in her voodoo doll, something she used to do quite a bit when she didn't get her way. Pure evil.) I feel like I was lucky to escape a lot of the on-going abuse people are talking about. Thank God! I am surprised no one has sued their asses. As for the people still there who put up with it, look on the bright side. They will hopefully get what's coming to them. They should be kicked right out of broadcasting.

Just a point: you can't be "universally loathed by many," because if it's only "by many" it's not universal, which means everyone. It helps to actually know the meanings of the words you're typing if you want to bring advertisers to the site.

I have worked at all the Bay Area TV stations except KNTV and I can assure you that they ALL abused them--regularly--when I was there except for KGO, which, pre return-of-Tracey, was actually a well-run ship. Now I understand they are as bad at KRON--at least.

The labor laws are worth little more than the paper they're printed on unless the department has the budget to enforce them. And California has no budget for anything these days, thanks to Republicans and Enron, speaking of laws worth little more than paper they're printed on.
