1982. Cal-Stanford Big Game.
I was working for Mutual Broadcasting as part of their PAC-10 on-air coordinator. Called my KTVU buddy, Mark Ibanez, to see if I could park my car at the TV station and get a ride with him to Memorial Stadium.
We drove to the game and I proceeded up to the Press box and sat next to Bay Area/KNBR broadcaster, Bruce Macgowan.
We both saw the game, and I do mean the last part of that game, the VERY LAST part of That Game.
As it looked apparent that Stanford was on its way to beating the Bears after Mark Harmon's kick with 8 seconds remaining, almost the entire press box was in the elevator heading down to the locker rooms.
Most of the Bay Area writers and assorted media missed The Play.
Only Macgowan and I, (and a few other assorted schlums) were witnesses.
And I still, to this day, don't really know what I saw, but I do remember a gigantic boom.

Yeah, but, Joe Starkey is always the first to give up on a Cal comeback. Amazing how fast he writes them off as having lost..then Cal makes a comeback.
ReplyDeleteJoe is always on too a low dose of Prozac.
