Thursday Media notes; Madden; KGO; Giants coverage; Rick Sanchez idea

**So, John Madden is so divine that he can't be asked a legitimate question by  KCBS about allegations regarding his favorite QB, Brett Favre? Huh?

I lamented the fact that a question at least needed to be asked to the big guy given the fact that almost ALL mainstream news and sports outlets, (like, oh, NY Times, ESPN, AP, among others) have not only reported the allegations, but even plugged Deadspin, the occasional gossip site that broke the story. Combine that with the fact that the NFL is investigating the matter and has spoken publicly that it intends to look at the allegations seriously.

This is not a pretty story, if true, for Favre and the NFL. And all indications is that the story is true. Therefore, as unseemly and god-awful ugly this looks, I think it's reasonably fair for Madden to at least be asked about it. Asked. If Madden doesn't want to address it, he can simply say so. How radical is that?

**One of the KGO all-stars apparently had a beef with me characterizing the free-falling local talkie as "kgo." I'd suggest that he'd listen and tell me otherwise.

**Have deliberately turned off both KNBR 680 and 1050, (my life is shattered) because predictably, its all 24/7 SF Giants and that's quite OK, but seriously, the rampant, every-second promos that have kidnapped both outlets are too much and I'd feel the same way even if I wasn't a diehard.

**I joked to a local TV news guy over lunch about how some station here should hire Rick Sanchez. Seriously, why not? Sanchez would be an instant ratings sensation and would probably do well. I'm not kidding.

Keep in mind that I know about Sanchez' baggage, (don't we all have baggage?) both in front and back of the desk, but when's he's not "being Rick Sanchez", he actually is a fairly above-average anchor and hell, can't be any worse than some of the yokels we have here in this town.

I can think of at least one place that would benefit and could afford the ex-CNNer, but they never think outside the box, which is paramount these days in local TV news.

**Larry King had roughly a little over 100,000 viewers the other night, his, and CNN's, lowest in prime time, in recent years.

The viewership count was about six weeks worth of "Henry's Garden" on KRON.

  1. You always lament KRON's coverage of breaking news, but you should consider accolades for the network during the Chile rescue. If you watched the evening news that night, they did an excellent job of staying with the rescue efforts. Additionally, the anchors did a solid job of texturizing (yes, I made up a word) the personal story-lines for the miners reaching the surface. It seem well-coordinated and executed.. and was very pleasant to watch.

  2. John Madden is treated like royalty at KCBS.

There is too much deference toward him.

Listening to that program can be painfull at times.
