Oakland A's trying to buy KTRB

The Oakland A's are actively trying to buy KTRB, their flagship 50,000-watt radio station, which recently went into receivership and now signs off the air every sundown.

The A's pursuit of the station is not exclusive--according to several broadcast observers, at least two-to-three serious players are also interested in purchasing the property, (860 AM on the dial), although even with enhanced tower maintenance, KTRB is difficult to hear in many parts of the Bay Area.

Various reports have the price tag of KTRB, (part of Pappas Broadcasting) at roughly $12 million, but that doesn't include debt assumption, which makes the real acquisition price significantly higher. KMPH, (another Pappas outlet) ceased operations September 1, 2010, and KTRB went into receivership with Comerica Bank two weeks later.

The A's, say insiders, are in active pursuit of their flagship Bay Area outlet, but are weary of outside investors who may overpay to buy the station given the scarcity of available dial-friendly outlets.

  1. If they do,What I recommend is they get a good pro-management host.Let's call him Gary Rabidrat, who will praise Lou Wolff for using MLB revenue for his own pocket as being a real American-not like those leftist shareists. He will joke he's a common man who "loves his fans" and everybody, but yet nobody has ever seen the inside on his home including good friend... Bob Fixedgerald ,say another new KTRB talent that the A's can rely on as to act as company spy on players, hitman on critics blogs, and has no boundrys of unethical journalism-you know, the perfect right hand man of Billy Beane for radio.
AND make sure you only hire white males, who can play tapes of badly spoken black athletes for laughs, and also pronounce spanish players names mangled beyond understanding-then blame THEM for those funny names.Oh,what fun they have during the Olympics accusing all other cultures as wanna be Americans. Those hilarious Japanese using hair dye!
And of course NEVER mention a local teams business or scores or its very existence if KTRB doesn't have broadcast rights.
THATS how you run a sports radio station..AND call yourself the no.1 sports station in the Universe with no proof whatsoever. If your going to lie,lie big is their motto.

  2. @ Annon..instead of blaming KNBR for the downfall of the A's you may want to look at your ownership. Remember the A's were the "kings of the Bay Area" for quite a while. Current owenership has decided to put down Oakland and not spend money on the team so they can "prove" they need to move out of Oakland. But, if you look at the #'s for many many yrs the A's would have more fans than the Giants did. If ownership would put money back into the team you'd see people go out to the park and local media covering the team much more. The bigger issue is lack of $$ in the mediao to assign beat coverage by various papers and stations like KNBR and KCBS to the A's among other teams. Remember it was KNBR that had the rights to the Raiders but the RAIDERS chose to pack up and move because they wanted more. KNBR also did try to get the rights to the A's for 1050........but the A's said no thank you. So blame lies at the feet of your team not at KNBR as you wish to say. The new park should be at Jack London Square but because of Jerry Brown not supporting sports when he was Mayor and current ownership they have decided not to truly look at that location. Which would have good transportation via Fwy, Amtrack (Sacramento Fans!), and water via ferry.

  3. Why is the signal so crappy and why does it at times not work at all when they have 50k watts?

Also is it just me or is KTRB running Ron Barr reruns like 10 out of the 24 hours a day. It just seems morning or night there is Ron talking away

  4. @Anon 4:37 PM-

The last thing Oakland needs is another ballpark to suck up tax revenue. The old argument about generating more business doesn't wash. The city of Oakland and Alameda County Coliseum Commission serviced Al Davis the way Monica Lewinsky serviced Bill Clinton, and the taxpayers of Oakland are the ones who got screwed. The City and County paid millions in guaranteed ticket sales to Al Davis and for building Mount Davis and the A's are rightly feeling like the red-headed stepchild even though they were the ones who stayed through thick and thin and honored their lease.

The City of Oakland can't even pay its police officers and is laying them off, and you want it to go further in debt to give a ballpark to a team which sealed off the top deck and can't even sell out the Coliseum except when the Red Sox and Yankees come in? I'll bet you were in favor of giving mortgages to everyone who asked for them too.

  5. Oakland doesn't need a new ballpark for the A's. Being a big-league town doesn't mean you have a professional sports team. A big-league town has safe streets and schools which work. Businesses don't relocate to another community because it has a professional sports team. Businesses relocate where their employees can walk the streets safely without being extras in a gangsta rap video. They relocate to communities where they can hire high school graduates who know how to add and know basic information like measurements. Think I'm exaggerating:? I worked with dozens of graduates of high schools in Oakland who could not mix beverages properly because the instructions said 2.5 gallons and the bucket was marked with quarts. They did not know there were 4 quarts in a gallon, and what's more, didn't think that was an important fact to know. When I tried to show them, they laughed at me behind my back and told each other, "he be trippin'." They did not understand it might be desirable to read instructions and follow directions. They were so short-sighted that they could not wrap their heads around the simple concept that if they mixed with drink without the proper amount of water, the number of servings we could sell would go down. And when the business got less profitable, they received fewer hours each week.

    Yeah, I be trippin'.

  6. Wow some of you really hate the A's and sports in general? May I suggest a drive over to SF and look at ATT, yes they built it with private dollars but that area was DEAD before the ballpark it's now all come to life again. Go drive to West Sac and look at what the A's triple A team did there after a ballpark was built, check out the Freighthouse Dist in Reno after the D'Backs ballpark was built. There are many MANY expamples of how to make a park work in a town. Buld it where there is transportation and people will go and hang out for the day. Restaurants get built jobs get created. You let the A's walk out of town they won't come back and you won't see what comes with the A's Nat'l pub, broadcasts showing Lake Merritt, Jack London Sq, boats in the water etc. That's all FREE ADVERTISING....so kick the A's because you got screwed over by Father Time Al Davis and then blame all profesional sports because of what he did. See the A's leave like Clorox is leaving, kick out the A's like Oakland did to Miller Hot Dogs...and you wonder why business doesn't want to be in Oakland anymore. Those are your tax dollars out the window.......your police officers, your teachers etc. Bring in 25-35k people a night for a ball game they will be visiting Oakland spending their money getting dinner etc....more than any other sport baseball promotes walking around the town and enjoying things.

  7. 12 million plus? hey that's basically a season's salary of chavez or sheets.

well worth it but the signal will always be an issue even if the a's put money in trying to improve it. if the a's buy the station i hope they can hire some local hosts for a change because this syndication stuff other than tittle i'm not a huge fan of listening to.

    Right on target!!!

SOMA in SF has been revitalized because the ball park, Yerba Buena Gardens, and the Moscone, and more. Especially around 3rd and King. People then spend money there, more tax revenue is collected, more police officers hired. More workers hired for restaurants, etc. We see now with the State (and the country) what happens when tax revenue goes down and services are cut in a bad economy. It's a downward spiral when it needs to spiral up.

The A's and A's fans should be less concerned about what others like KNBR are doing and more concerned by what THEY are doing. COMPETE, damn it, instead of bitching about the competition. And that means off the field. Buying KTRB is a step in the right direction. They need a stable home with a strong signal and have that station become their own mouthpiece. Take control of the distribution of your product, Athletics!

I don't expect the City of Oakland to spend money in this bad economy but perhaps a deal where the land is leased cheap and the A's build the stadium? If not, there is LOTS of money and land in Silicon valley with the only impediment being the Giants territorial rights. So the City of Oakland will need to compete or lose the team. Whether the money is there or not, the city has to compete with other Bay Area cities, USA cities, and a global economy to keep business in Oakland.

  9. The A'S need new stations(s)they also lost their Spanish outlet this season, then KTRB basically was just doing the A'S games. Nothing at night on KTRB really, everything(except Ken Dito's Press Box Show)each morning at 9AM and the guy that follows him is local, everything else there at this time is canned.
KNBR aside from Giants games, it's boring. Image if the Giants went on to win the World Series? They will have Giants replay until next Spring Training everyday.
Larry Baer is very happy selling tickets already for next season, Krukow leading the way, will probably run for Mayor, is between Krukow and Pelosi. By-the-bay: Ralph Barbieri didn;t lose his voice, that IS HIS VOICE.
