Source: Dave Flemming leaving Stanford Basketball; will call hoops at ESPN
Dave Flemming, the SF Giants play-by-play announcer and Stanford Cardinal football/basketball tonsil, will leave his Stanford basketball duties and has been hired at ESPN to work its college basketball schedule, according to a knowledgeable broadcast source.
Eric Kwait, a spokesman for Learfield Sports, the radio syndicate that oversees Stanford broadcasting, (heard locally on XTRA Sports 860), declined to comment for this story.
Flemming will continue to do play-by-play for Stanford's football team and the Giants.
Those in the know say the early candidate to replace Flemming is current color commentator, John Platz, although other names have also surfaced, including St. Mary's bb -men's voice Mike Bouve, USF Women's bb pxp-er George Devine, Cal Women's-BB caller Dave Lewis, former SJSU Voice John Shrader, and current Santa Clara px-per Anthony Pasarelli.

He gets a lot of flack on local boards, but not from me. He actually works for KNBR without sounding like he was dipped and stained in the KNBR sauce like almost all the rest. He has no gimmick I've noticed, seems level headed not ego driven.Heck, long before Kruke and Kuipe would say it,Flemming pointed out Rowand was slumping badly. Until he starts repeating those inane KNBR catchphrases, he's ok in my book.
ReplyDeleteHe never says anything memorable with his monotone voice. I only remember him for his phrase "What's on Tap" on the KNBR wrap.
ReplyDeleteI like Fleming. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteI am a big "Flem" fan, I think Dave is by far one of the best PbyP guys there are. That being said, he worked for ESPN last year as well as Stanford. My guess is he's getting a bigger part at ESPN this winter. If I recall most of the games he did last year were ESPNU games, he called one Saint Mary's game if I remember correctly
ReplyDeleteFlem is the best-spoken broadcaster of his generation.
