Saturday Bay Area media notes

**How silly is it that our two AM news radio stations have become engaged in a "who does traffic 'more and best?' war. Stupid. Yes, of course I'm hip to the fact that commuters care about traffic and accidents, but hey guys, can we get some "news" or is that suddenly a foreign concept?

**I made an appearance on Comcast "Chronicle Live" Friday night; I emphasize "appearance", because it was hard to get in a word edgewise, between the overbearing, ever-lovely, 1050 sports talkie and the ex-Southbay, columnist diva who thinks she's the sporting version of Maureen Dowd. Not.

**KRON management? I really don't care if you've instructed your work force not to talk to me, but be advised if you're going to that extreme, it'd be nice if you actually paid these guys. By the way, they're still singing anyway.

**Lovely local industry: a new weather hire that can rap, but won't at least for now because "at KRON, we're 'serious about the weather, " (even though they can't get the name of the current hurricane right); publicist at another TV outlet who misleads and lies, and paranoia at a place that is king. Yikes.

**A person who should know told me that real-time traffic, (accidents, stalls, etc) happen way, way, before we get them from the "traffic-first" people.

**Another nauseating routine: the continued, yearly kvetching about the outfield conditions at the Coliseum when the A's return home from a road trip, after a Raiders game. Hey, how many countless shots of a brown spot do we have to see? Yeah, we know it looks bad, we know the A's need a new stadium, (Raiders too) so the barrage of shots, conversation by TV/radio guys about the "condition of the field" has become the equivalent of a KQED pledge break.

**Memo to the other sports guy opposite 1050 guy: you got your point across, I just wish you'd have done it in a more professional manner, but the ending was swell, so we'll call it a win in overtime.

**Jan Wahl. Why?

**Sports guys on TV doing news? Oh my gawd, Margie, call the cops! (As if sports readers can't read news teleprompters)

**The KRON/NBC talks continue about a 'shared-services' agreement/merger and yes, every other day, things change--bottom line, it makes too much sense not to happen, so I guess they'll figure out a way to screw it up as they always do; either way, a load of layoffs will ensue and I don't care how many "job openings" appears on the KRON website.

**That was refreshing...a real bona-fide, news interview of 49ers owner/pres., Jed York, by KCBS' Jane McMillian and news direc., Ed Cavagnaro. I say refreshing because questions about new stadium dealt with real things like, oh, financing, sustainability, you know, questions that were devoid of things like linebackers, salary cap, Notre Dame, giggling, stuff like that, dude.

**Kevin "the rat." Why?

**KGO Radio news, your TMZ of the 415.

**KPIX, it might be wise to put out a memorandum about some of your talent posting Facebook status updates, and NO, I don't use FB as a source of information, but thanks for asking.

**I hope Brian Copeland's new show is a success on KGO-TV, but given the fact station brass gave him the Death Valley of time slots, (3-4PM) I don't know if the show has a decent chance. Then again, I never understood Oprah, so what the hell do I know.

**Guilty pleasure dept: KCSM-FM anytime of the day. Please don't go away anytime soon.

**Two of the BEST guys on local radio that aren't local: Phil Hendrie and Alan Colmes, on KNEW and Green 960.

**That oldish sports-talk host who does a morning show on a station not named KNBR, should thank his lucky stars anyone writes anything about him and his fifteen friends and relatives who listen.

**Ray Taliaferro. Why?

**Bill Wattenburg, the smartest a-hole on KGO radio, in a nutshell: CARB, "eco-frauds", Sierra Club 'eco-frauds, jerks, eco-terrorists, nuclear power plants, redwood forest eco-frauds, 'ego-thugs, smart-meters, Clint Eastwood, and that's just the first five minutes.

**Why not just report traffic 24/7, radio peeps, and to hell with news and sports. (Sorry Metro, just kidding)

**Favorite "commenter" on local sports newspaper Internet sites: someone named "StanTheMan" or "StanOMan"--can't figure if the guy is legit, crazy, stalkerish or all of the above, but his rants are funny, if not a tad scary. The worst thing is half the time he's right, just be sure to take the meds, oh Stanno.

**KCBS' Steve Bitker got a memo saying he's God, so please everybody, be mindful.

**Labor Day 2010, like speaking of why.

**Follow me on Twitter if you care about life and my ability to sing Frank Sinatra.

  1. Chronicle Live-You gotta jump in there, Rich. Sure, Damon and Ann can monopolize the conversation but Papa will let you have your say.

Damon was all over yesterday. He popped into the end of Gary's show on Friday and then again with FP Friday night after he was coming home from the A's game. It made for some great radio last night between the two.

Dr. Bill-Unlistenable for me. Even the so called "smartest man in America" (and I know he doesn't call himself that, others do) can be wrong. But, he's got more expertise than I do in many areas so I bow to his knowledge. But the presentation is tiring. Same with Ray T.

  2. Hey,Thanks Rich!,there's a compliment in there someplace,I can feel it-lol.Stalker? nah, never. A: too lazy to bother with that. B:With the price of gas, forget it. C: Nobody upsets me enough to undo point A.
Just a wise to the world almost regular guy tired of lies,bs,and corporate mentality.
Yea,I'm a bit eccentric I guess,But it's honest and not forced. And I'm semi retired so posting is a cheap hobby. I got real world bills too.
And go easy on Ann,she's one of the few I detect as real and sincere..she did call down Radnich on his Beck apologist statements. He was genuinely shocked to hear her say nobody in local media agrees with him. He won't listen to the truth from me..

  4. I don't know what Ditto did to incur your wrath. I'd much rather listen to him and guests than the ridiculous Radnitch.

  5. Rich, One of the AM stations, KGO is a Talk Station that does News...The Other, KCBS is all news. KGO changed the time of their traffic reports in their News Blocks only...Making them First to do traffic during the News blocks...KCBS Management, it would seem. does not seem to like the word first associated with KGO. So, they have decided they are FIRST at everything in traffic... Number of Traffic Reports Per Week, Per hour, Per day, Per Year... So they are the only ones having a war it would seem, of words. Clearly 5 comes before 8.

And since you are so always so dismissive of people who Actually work in the media you so love to criticize and seemingly crave to work in, may I just offer my opinion...

    **Rich Lieberman...WHY, and Who Cares?

  6. I was also wondering about your Ken Dito comment...what's up? I think it's good he's on.

Your KRON management comments cracked me up. I actually quit watching after Evelyn left. Was that a "show me the money" situation as well? I'm guessing it was.

I love your blog because I think your just like me. I've been a radio listener for several decades and have been dismayed by the downward spiral in quality. Sure it might not change anything, but it sure feels good to read someone that is like minded.
