A little more about SF media and KPIX/Singletary--Kessler too.

We're all supposed to be over that.

Long week of calls and e-mails. The Facebook threads, (which I don't take part in, professionally) were all over the place, between the Singletary/49ers/KPIX affair and John Kessler situation.

It didn't dawn on me until I saw on Facebook that there's a "Bring John Back" to KPIX page. This, after a month and a half of news that Kessler was shown the door. I had been receiving, (still) comments on that story which resulted in me calling Kessler back to see if he knew what was going on, (no) only to see the Singletary thing explode and take on a life of its own.

I ridiculed out loud the SF media brethren who acted like sheep and seemed non-plussed that KPIX bow to the 49ers in such a wimpish manner. Only then after when Yahoo! wrote about the thing did the paper's bloggers even mention it, let alone write about it--don't even dare talk about the print editions where the whole sordid affair was relegated to mere half-sidebars, if at that.

I kept hearing about money. Lots of "money" involved, sure I know about the 49ers and its deal with KPIX and yes, we're talking about a significant amount of revenue, branding, NFL, marketing, the works, etc and when you get into that arena, throw out all mentions of the word, "ethics" and so on.

So, yes, the almighty buck takes precedence over small things like removing your top sports guy from the highlights show gig and replacing him with your house cutesy shill, (NO, I don't have it out with the lady--she's just great) and that's just for starters. There's much more but can't say anything just yet.

Call me naive, but I'm still rather stunned that THIS whole deal was largely ignored by our so-called "media" here in SF. The only coverage it generated, practically speaking, was Yahoo!, (thank God), a little SJ Merc, (Dan Brown in particular) and late in the game, the big boys, Kawakami and LCohn, (way late, after me)

None of the TV guys were interested, (I'm shocked); radio? Are you kidding? It was Radnich and his usual mail-it-in-blather with the usual Garyesque take, ("How can you blame Dennis?") Well, Gair, it really wasn't Dennis, who started out looking like a chump and ended up, a. demoted, b. thrown under the rug by his own wimpy company, and c. comes out looking like a martyr.

Is this a great country or what?

I know its really late at 9:30PM....DOD, Eric Davis, & Dibbly doin De La Salle vs Bishop Gorman (Nevada) HS Football game on CBS College Sports Network (which actually started to air at halftime due to Rice v Baylor game going past broadcast time). Also, a shout out to KFRC 1550 AM High School football with Mike Bouve & Scott Armstrong.

  3. Personally, I believe you deserve a pat on the back for keeping this in the spotlight.
Concerning the local media, you'd be hard pressed to even get a score out of the Chronicle, never mind in depth coverage on a sports issue.
