Roethlisberger story is 'news--not sports; double Savage on XTRA 860; Monday media dish
There's a growing trend in the sporting media to cover stories that are essentially news events.
The latest allegations of a sexual assault, involving Pittsburgh Steelers QB, Ben Roethlisberger, is a news story that happens to involve a prominent, high-profile NFL football player. It is NOT a sports story.
Yet, the major sporting media outlets, like ESPN, ESPN Radio and its other affiliates, have been front and center on the story, with very little analysis from either news or legal reporters.
Roger Cossack, ESPN's legal commentator, provided info and analysis on the matter, but its been sporadic. Again, this is something for news, not sports.
Sure, it involves a major NFL player, and as such, it obviously has to be reported. After that, there's absolutely nothing sports-related to this matter. That's why there's a news division. Simple enough? I hope so.
**Double dose of Savage--
Michael Savage has created enough of a stir and buzz, XTRA Sports 860 AM, has now decided to air Savage twice; his daily show live 3-5 PM, plus a recorded, morning-drive version from the prior broadcast, from 6- 9 AM.
**Oscars post-mortem: Another bore. Opening number lousy. No stand-out events. A so-so performance by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who reminded us that actors can read cue cards.
Is it over yet? Again.
