Santangelo perfect recipe for 'safe and clean' KNBR/Giants radio; Sportsphone fill-in won't rock the boat
F.P. Santangelo is a nice guy. Met him at the Comcast facility last year and was quite cordial and professional. Good person.
On the other hand, as he prepares to take over his new gig at KNBR as the Giants post game host on "Sportsphone" (680 AM) 7-10 PM and following Giants games, it will be interesting to see how he handles his chores when the Giants don't look too swell.
I've listened to Santangelo and while he's not afraid to criticize if its called for, my best guess is now that he's on a full time basis, he will temper his opinions and be a little less harsh. That's not to knock him, hell, its precisely THAT reason why he got the gig.
Damon Bruce, who moves to 1050 on Monday for a Noon-4 PM, wasn't liked in the Giants hierarchy. They made it a point to relegate him to doing only road games and inserted Dave Flemming as the house host following home contests. The Giants were none-to-thrilled with Bruce stark and bold assessments of the team when it was apparent that the home guys had virtually no bats to compliment a great pitching staff.
The end result was a pissed-off Flemming having to stay at times until midnight during night games to take booster club calls and plug the next game. It wasn't very good radio; it was predictable and dull--worse yet, it made the Giants look bad and spoke volumes of who pulls the strings between KNBR and its baseball partner.
I'm going to give Santangelo the benefit of the doubt. I don't expect to hear the passion of a Bruce after a bitter defeat; that's not his style. He's more laid-back and will be critical in his own way; not the manner of a hard-nosed "you guys suck", more open-minded and "safe" enough for the Giants and KNBR's wishes.
