KRON/NBC shared-services deal facing many obstacles; potential 'bloodbath' in newsroom; local AFTRA fights back

The prospect of a shared-services arrangement between KRON and NBC (at NBC BA studios in San Jose) is anything but a done deal. In fact, according to a knowledgeable local broadcast source, there are several obstacles.

KRON ownership, (Young) tried to push forward the agreement, knowing in the end it would save them tons of money, (read: lost jobs) and beyond that, according to the source, create a "bloodbath" inside the newsroom. Looks as if they succeeded.

The source continued: "The lack of a 'signed AFTRA contract puts a serious snag in a shared-services deal with NBC."

Additionally, according to a KRON source, "AFTRA is asking for hefty severance packages to be written into the proposed contract."

Bottom line: The arrangement will be fought hard by the local AFTRA; if it eventually passes to fruition, there will be significant people out of jobs at KRON, including anchors, reporters, technical staff, editors; nobody's on the safe list.
