Storm Center 2010; Bay Area media gets ready; lots of Doppler and 'team coverage'
It's supposed to rain this week forever; there is more moisture out there in the Pacific than three Lake Tahoes', at least that's what they're telling us. Flooding, storm surges, the works, "record-setting" amounts of precipitation, get the sandbags, call your mother-in-law kinda-stuff.
Welcome to "Storm Center 2010" and we have you covered from Marin to the Santa Cruz mountains. And our Doppler is better than your pin-point radar! Makes you yearn for Pete Giddings and his black-ink sharpie. And just yesterday, I thought we were in a drought.
So yes, indeed, there IS a huge white swash of satellite imagery that stretches all the way to Japan. The forecasters, even the notoriously conservative National weather service, says things could get tricky. Or not. I like Bill Martin from KTVU who says, "hey, back off, let's wait and see. If we get some breaks between these 'systems, we should be ok." Martin's voice of reason is the lone wolf; almost everyone else is predicting the wrath of low pressure. Including about ten local TV/radio news directors who secretly hope all hell breaks loose and those blue parkas and satellite trucks are all over Marin, with reporters asking shlepper #1, "so, are you worried?--is your house slipping?"
Expect a lot of "team coverage" mentions. Count 'em. Seriously. And Sgt. Trent Cross from the CHP is due for about fifty live shots pleading people to "slow down." Duh! Only problem is people in the Bay Area don't know how to drive when the weather is good, and therefore, the rainy conditions will make it even worse.
And can't wait for the inevitable schmuck and his friend who decide to take a "small craft" outside to the bay so the Coast Guard can risk their lives trying to save doofus 1 and 2 who ignored the 4000 reports of advisories.
Enjoy the week, drought-busters. Stay safe and dry people, and don't forget to stock up on those batteries and water. And, oh, by the way, we have team coverage beginning with David Louie in San Anselmo and Mike Mibach along Hwy. 80.
