LaRussa's hour with Ronn Owens; Raiders pursue Jim Harbaugh
Tony LaRussa was Tony LaRussa Wednesday on the Ronn Owens KGO radio program. The normally tough, but fair, Owens played it a tad too much "Mr. softie", but overall, the hour-long conversation was fairly decent, if a bit too giggly.
LaRussa still defended McGwire's half-hearted mea culpa. I don't know why Tony is risking his image over Big Macroids, but I guess he has his reasons.
Here's me directly to Owens after the show:
So you really think Tony had no clue that McGwire was using ped's? You don't think Tony was 'taking a bullet for Mark and looking the other way? If that's true, I don't think people would have an issue with Tony, but many people who are friends of LaRussa think he's being disingenuous at best and a liar at worst.
Owens shot me back an e-mail:
I think he wanted McGwire's homers.
As he said today, "I didn't follow him home."
When you don't want to be put in a compromising position, you just avoid knowing.
Uh, whatever...
RAIDERS SPEAK TO JIM HARBAUGH--
As I opined here in this space passionately Jan. 9Th, the Raiders need to get Jim Harbaugh on board. Apparently, they met with him and he supposedly has no interest in the job. OK, so why did he make a trip to Alameda and meet with Al Davis? Like, why would you meet with an organization that you have "no interest" in? Like what, a cell phone wasn't available?
This isn't the end of this story. Think about numbers like this: 4 and 20. Yeah, draw your own conclusions.

Now that Pete Carroll has left USC, the idea of Harbaugh leaving Stanford is delicious to a Cal fan. Go Bears!
ReplyDeleteNoting your juice with the Old Blues Kev, what's the latest feelings about Tedford; I know he has upgraded the program and certainly CAL is on the right track, but if he can't make either a top-tier bowl or the Rose, is his honeymoon over?
ReplyDeleteRich, 2010 is the year for Tedford to take Cal to a BCS bowl or he has to move on. Tedford's Bears must play consistently well in 2010 and win the PAC 10 title, or Jeff needs to find another school. Playing in a lower tier bowl game is now longer a reason to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteThis last comment about Harbaugh and "4 and 20" is that just a guess on your part, or have you actually heard from a reliable source that would get it done. And also are you sure he actually went to Alameda? I thought it was a phone call or the old 'contacted through back channels' kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteI wrote on the 9th, (check the archives) that the Raiders and Mr. Davis should pursue and hire Jim Harbaugh. Just my opinion, taking off my "reporter" hat...Do I know for sure that he met with AD? No, I was relying on a very good source that has some knowledge of the situation... the "4 and 20" was a guess on my part because remember, it was the Raiders org. that offered Bobbie Petrino a 5-year, $15M contract that he initially ok'd back in 2006, but then balked out...It's no secret that Harbaugh wants to coach in the NFL and that he previously worked for the Raiders on '02-'03 as QB coach. I laugh when I hear the so-called "experts" say he'd "never" take the Raiders job. Maybe. Maybe not. I do know he has interest and that he loves the Bay Area and his Stanford gig is short-term. I'll leave it at that.
