Could Vick be courted by 49ers? Raiders considering Leach, Trestman; NBC's Florio weighs in; the Monday pulse
Mike Florio is the highly respected NFL insider for both NBC's "Football Night in America" and editor for the on-line Pro Football Talk.com
Florio told me that its a virtual certainty Tom Cable is done as Raiders coach, perhaps as early as today, (Monday.) And whom might Al Davis be pursuing? Florio says the Raiders boss is looking at former Texas Tech coach, Mike Leach and ex Raiders offensive coordinator, Mark Trestman.
**Florio also told me there's a "25%" chance the 49Er's would look at signing Michael Vick. Yes, that Michael Vick.
Florio's take on Vick:
Any team without a settled quarterback situation should at least be interested in Vick. He improved as the year unfolded, even though it's possible that some of his gains were the result of good play design and timing. (For example, a three-yard run from the 50 has slightly less impact on the stat sheet than a three-yard run from the opponents' 2.)
The challenge will be to come up with a trade package that the Eagles will accept, and a contract that fairly pays Vick beyond 2010.
What about the possible protests, given Vick's past dog fighting conviction? I mean, SF ain't Dallas.
The public reaction to Vick has been less harsh than expected, making it easier for other teams to take a chance on him next year. Though there would be a greater chance at loud opposition in the Bay Area, I don't believe there's a significant overlap between football fans and animal-rights activists.
