I respect Jon Miller. And he's certainly hall of fame quality. As you know, Vin Scully broadcast until he was nearly 90. And during his last 8-10 years the only road games he did for the Dodgers were in San Francisco. Jon is 74 and feels he's earned the right to take time off and not have to go to gritty places such as Pittsburgh or Detroit or Atlanta which he has probably visited well over 100 times each during the couse of his 50 some odd year career. I can't say I blame him. The long season of baseball is a grind. I traveled with the Giants from time to time and even though one gets first class treatment in the plane and at the hotel. you're living 8-12 days out of a suitcase and most of the time you're either at the hotel or the ballpark with the exception of the occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. But I agree with you about the "on assignment" nonsense. I don't think that would have flown back in 2002, when Barry Bonds was at his height. I don't think it would have even been accepted 10 years ago when the Giants were at the tail end of a 4 playoff run in a 7 year span that included 3 World Series Championships. Again, Miller is 74 years old. HE NEEDS TO PACE HIMSELF, 74 years of age is usually about 5 to 6 years after most of us have retired so he's earned the right to take time off. But the "on assignment" BS bothers a lot of us. I have little doubt that phrase was coined by good old Larry Baer, a man who doesn't understand the meaning of the word, integrity. And speakong of that joke of a company that owns KNBR and DESTROYED KGO? F+&% .Cumulus!!!
Maybe Miller was ready to call it quits and Giants management nudged him back to work any schedule he wanted. Vin Scully had a similar deal when he was near retirement. This is maybe 80% on management and 20% on Miller.
Glad we still get Miller for some of the games...he's still great at play-by-play on the radio. We will miss him when he decides to hang it up. Let's enjoy him while he's still working.
