Pete Franklin, a class act, also had a great talk show, second only to the gifted Gene Burns, what a loss! His. Burns, genius was to look at issues more objectively. How I still miss his program. Evening entertainment that could hold its own with the best of them.
Monte Stickles was very bright and a very good football analyst, working alongside the legendary Bill King on the Oakland Raider broadcasts in the late 1970s and early 80s. But he was a mean drunk who loved to fight. He used to take jobs as a bouncer at SF nightclubs so he could get into scraps with drunken, unruly customers. Monte lost his job at KGO partly because he and SF Giants manager Frank Robinson got into an ugly, shouting,, profanity laced argument after Monte showed up to the game in the 7th inning with bourbon on his breath. This took place in front of about six stunned sportswriters in the manager’s office after a tough Giants’ loss..
The less said about Barbieri the better. Many of us were tired of his pathetic act and celebrated his firing. As was heard around my house when Razor’s voice was heard, “turn that shit off !!”
Stickles is/was the only former player banned for life from Notre Dame. Just ask Ted Robinson.
ReplyDeleteMen like Larry Krueger, Christine Craft and Damon Bruce helped make Bay Area Sports what it is today. Thank you, Men.
