Not only is KPIX's VR weather set useless and gratuitous...I truly believe the Wx forecast now takes LONGER to do than before. Seriously, weather shouldn't take more than 1-2 minutes tops. When it gets to 4 it's not because there's more weather news but because the station drags things down by showing off fancy graphics which requires more time.

Whatever rumors there were about Holmes wanting to push Haener out or any friction between the two...they got permanently squashed when the two went off globetrotting to New Orleans and then off to Paris together.
I doubt Lim gets the 5 as long as Sze is still in the building. Not that I care what KGO does. It's been unwatchable for well over a decade now.
If KRON cuts Wayne loose that means Lodes gets primetime. And that would be reason enough for me to stop watching.
Not only is it useless, but all the walking around by the weather anchors looks weird and stupid.
DeleteThe “perspective” of the fake weather set is quite poor. HALF MOON BAY looms large yet you can barely see santa rosa (a city 4x larger than HMB) They really need to make all the city listings the same size font. Most of us who watch local weather reports know the lay of the land.

So nice to see print again. Hope it says. In fact, I agree with everything you printed today (that rarely happens) except for for that weather guy(Peck) at KPIX. I can't stand him. But I dislike about 50% of the people doing newscasts on Bay Area stations now.

DeleteIt would be interesting to see a poll on the virtual weather set at KPIX. It doesn't seem to add any value whatsoever, and the graphics are hard to see, especially the all important city names and temperature numbers. It's just a disaster. If not for Jules, there would be no reason to watch KPIX.
ReplyDeleteTolbert is probably paid a decent dime, so cutting him loose may make sense, but Copes hosting the afternoon timeslot alone would be a disaster.
Sal is a good traffic reporter, but he's extra weight on the 9. There's just no use for a 3rd anchor, plus he just looks creepy while staring and waiting for his lines.

DeleteYes, agree 100%: Darren Peck is excellent. His commentary and knowledge is *so good* that you don't have to see the screen to understand the day's forecast! On the other hand, Heggen blabbers on so much, so fast, he actually needs "weather dogs" to keep peoples' attention. Peck deserves the top spot.
DeleteThe VR set has to go; down the tubes along with those tubes. Why project the screen at an angle to the viewer? Why use tiny thin unreadable fonts of important numbers on white backgrounds? By comparison, look at KNTV/NBC's weather--night and day, hands down a much better and much simpler presentation.
Keep Peck, and take a loss with Heggen and the VR set.
I was speaking with a veteran reporter the other day and they said news has become like Taco Bell. You go and order the chalupa, and when you get it there’s no cheese. Just like when you turn on the 11pm news and you find Bonnie Simonson. So you go back and say you forgot the cheese. But when you open the bag the second time, there’s no chalupa, only a cabbage coleslaw burrito. So you change the channel.

Funny, that's how long I've been gone from there. I was told it went to shits right after I split by many of the people who are still there. It all started when Frau Commendant Trixisch von Wattenkovskish took over in a coup.

DeleteMost folks think Tom Tolbert is a boor and a poser. He knows basketball but in betting on other sports he uses the line to make wagers on teams he has never heard of.
He is not funny, he is not intelligent, and he has used the same tired lines for decades.
His being paired with Copes only adds insult to injury.
Think I am wrong? His #’s are sinking, a steady decline. His radio days are numbered, but he will still be pontificating around Chase Center begging to get front row seats to Tool.
I cannot wait to read that he got the Axe.

ReplyDeleteI seriously doubt they spent over $1,000,000 on weather. It's not like they have that much money laying around. I'm sure they over paid but not by THAT much. The graphics are actually good, and I like that they walk to different parts of the Bay Area. But when the "test tubes" pop up with the forecasted temps.... jeesh!

DeleteWhy not talk about Max Darrow? He is the weekend morning anchor and reports a few days a week. I’ve seen him fill in anchor for Devin on weekends and he has a great, energetic anchor and delivers very stellar reports. I love his enthusiasm generally. Devin Fehely is also good but in a more authoritarian way.
