Papa and Ryan in Mid-Season Form at Niners-Chiefs NFL Pre-Season Opener on KPIX

BOTH Greg Papa and Tim Ryan were in fine, mid-season form last (Saturday) night as the duo play-by-play (radio) worked the 49ers-KC pre-season opener on TV (KPIX)

Maybe because Papa and Ryan did the KPIX telecast, the normally excitable twosome were relatively calm and cool. There were obligatory shouts of excitement but overall, Papa was more sanguine and Ryan pretty much stuck to the basics and toned it down. Again, the fact both did the TV broadcast maybe had a part in the tone. It was subdued and it sounded cool to me. Papa seemed delighted that there were fans in the stands at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara and Ryan too warmed to the new feel and roar of the crowd.

Papa has always been superb in his play-by-play acumen, there's no denying that. Yes, I'm not crazy about his TD call (TD, San-Fran-Cisccco!) but I've never questioned his robust PBP style and endless game info and description of the play. Papa is uncanny about that and Ryan offers a first-rate analysis, especially bouyant from an ex-NFL players perspective. As with Papa, Ryan struck a solid, mid-season chord last night.

  1. Agree on everything. It doesn’t get any better than Papa. God, country, and Papa is what I always say. Last night I poured a glass of wine. Turned the volume up, and listened to the sweet soothing silky tones of Papa. Then I watered the lawn after sunset.

  2. I've never been a fan of Papa, but if O'Donnell was supposed to do the call and didn't show up, I'll take Papa.

    Who did the radio broadcast?

  3. I don't know what was so great about them. Neither one took a breath the whole night and never said a word about missing the extra point on the first touchdown. They were too busy fawning over an 80 yard pass.

  4. I turned on Papa as well, remembered what a pompous ass he was
and strained a beer through my kidneys onto my lawn....

    1. That is a play on words, on E-40's Bay Arrreeeaaa saying he did in a song. Trey Area has been Trey Lance's nickname since the Niners drafted him.

    1. Papa is very knowledgeable on Football, I agree with Rich about TD calls, kind of bush and actually turn down the radio when he did Touchdown ( RAIDERS ) , as far as Ted Robinson, I do like him and wish he or Papa did the Warrior games instead of Fitz, who is unlistenable, but for some reason he kept his Warrior job and did the Olympics and fills in on radio for the Niners when the game is not on National TV. I just don't get it, pompous, annoying and talks down to you like we are abunch of children that know nothing about sports. I do feel that Lacob feels sorry for himd ue to his personal loss a few years ago.

Fitz is entertaining, has great basketball knowledge and is far better than his young Warrior sidekick. Not sure why Lacob thought it was a good idea to replace the Always Excellent Jim Barnett with a novice.

    3. @Anonymous- 8:55 I agree with you about Jim Barnett, great baskeball knowlegde and I learned alot about the game from him, his replacement is awful. I won't pretend for a second that I have great baskeball knowledge, but anything that comes out of Fitz's mouth, I already know. ( Pompous condenscending blowhole )

    4. Fitz and Papa are both more than competent play by play announcers, regardless of the delusion, shared by many, that they are cruel to puppies.

  7. Papa has one of the worse broadcast voices I've ever heard. This guy is popular?? Jeesh!

  9. Wow! What a terrible choice. Papa on television or Fitzgerald on radio. Can't stand either of them.

  10. Papa is that old guy in the club that hasn't realized his time has passed.

  11. I don't know who comes off as more sanctimonious, Tim Ryan or Joe Buck.
