KGO's Double MVPs: Dan Ashley and Michael Finney

KGO had a decent if not spectacular Sweeps; it helped tremendously that two of its star anchors had significantly more air time and resulted in ABC7 maintaining its dominance in the weeknight news wars.

Parenthetically, KGO figures to score BIG TIME as it carries the Warriors-Toronto NBA Finals this week and next.

Dan Ashley, KGO's main news anchor at 5, 6, 9 and 11 PM carries the load for Circle7 prominence. He sometimes does the 4 PM quasi-newscast and has, in effect, become KGO's prime news guy and its ambassador of good will, making speeches, doing charity work at numerous events and spreading its good will on and off the air. He's a valuable commodity to the ABC San Francisco office at 900 Front.

So too, Michael, Finney, KGO's veteran Consumer Anchor who employs a staff of a half of dozen producers who maintain his powerful "7 On Your Side" franchise. How valuable? Enough to allow Finney to get to the heart of scams and detailed investigations of consumer ripoffs and individuals and companies screwing people (some, elderly) out of thousands of dollars. Finney is a key conduit to the ABC7 news segments.

Which only proves the obvious: Ashley and Finney are KGO's twin MVPs and whose presence on the airwaves makes KGO infinitely more watchable.

  1. As I recall, Finney is a good reporter, but his high pitched voice can quickly become annoying. Guess you can't have everything. He's still performing a public service few others do these days.

Better to listen to his tenor than that Stanley Roberts' smug intonations. He who delighted in humiliating drivers on camera.

  3. Those two are really the main reason I watch Channel 7. They've got a lot of good people-- Mike and Dan top the list.

  6. Michael Finney is the only reason I would watch ABC7 news, but unfortunately, I can't stand Ashley, Biele, or Ditz, so I don't.

  7. Michael Finney is THE only reason I'd tune in to KGO (radio or TV)... and I haven't lived in the Bay Area for 29 years ... !!!
