Tuesday Quick Open: A's Eye Old 610 AM Frequency, KFRC for 2019 Radio Home; KGO-TV's Ashley Draws Strong East Coast Interest; Extension Probable; Pam Moore KRON Bond Could Be Broken

*The A's, unhappy for a variety of reasons at their radio arrangement, are looking seriously at buying the old 610 AM KFRC frequency for their 2019 baseball broadcasts --the cost of such endeavor would probably be in the 8-to $10 million dollar range (the frequency is owned by Family Radio) but no doubt be a vast improvement over their currently horrid arrangement with Entercom's terrible 95.7 FM-- 'The Game' and AM Death Valley site, 1550 AM.

*SO FAR, KGO-TV and its new GM, have only begun partial negotiations with longtime, respected anchor, Dan Ashley over an extension of his soon ending contract.

Ashley has been at KGO for almost three decades and remains one of its most popular anchors and personalities. So much so in fact, Ashley has drawn strong interest from at least two NY stations and the ABC News network itself for anchor positions. Sources close to Ashley say he wants badly to remain in the Bay Area despite east coast interest. One source to 415 Media-- "He would like to get a deal done now and avoid long, drawn out negotiations, but it takes two to tango."

Ashley is believed to be the highest-paid news anchor in the Bay Area (at roughly $600G a year) but most industry observers say he's due a raise and could command a seven-figure salary given his name and tenure at ABC7 here.

My bet is he will get that extension soon.

*If KRON isn't careful they might be in the process of losing Pam Moore; she's been sending out feelers to local stations saying she's available at the right price. So far, Moore, (making roughly about $300G at penny-pinching KRON) hasn't had any serious offers but that could change soon.

Hey, KPIX, are the rumors true? If so you better hurry and do a deal now.

  1. - Still awaiting Dave Kaval's next A's new ballpark announcement. Might need to make the final Coliseum-or-Howard Terminal decision before making any future radio contracts official. I don't know if any MLB flagship radio station is in a Religion format - usually it's News, Talk, Classic Rock, Top 40, Adult Contemporary, R&B, or Country-Western. A's could make history by returning to the old KFRC dial where KEAR is currently located with their church format.
    - Disappointed that Circle7 is dragging their feet on the Ashley extension. Might it be because Ashley may have said that Trixie is bad for the station, but that the new GM stupidly wasn't having it? Even though Disney HQ said Trixie must go? Sigh.
    - If that Pam Moore KRON departure rumor is true, her next station can only be better for it. And if it is PIX, we would love to know every other grapevine note about what their plans are, especially since CBS' 2018-19 TV season includes the Super Bowl.

  2. "A's Eye Old 610 AM Frequency, KFRC"
And we say; what took them so long?
Finally, someone at the A's understands how important a strong signal on the AM band means to a sports franchise.

    1. It will be interesting how A's games can mix in with the current Family Radio programming. Is the station going to be sold?

    2. i live in the south bay and 610 is kinda spotty sometimes with its signal, it might be stronger elsewhere in the bay area..rather have them stay on fm

  3. Watching ABC 7 News.... David Louie pulling a KRON at the scene of the plane crash.... "Well, as you can see over my shoulder 1/4 of a mile away, the plane has crashed" I absolutely HATE the MMJ model.... Send an damn camera guy! Clearly Louie was solo, otherwise they would have zoomed in! Seriously, an ABC O & O opening their 5pm news with an MMJ in a major market. That is cheap! ABC 7 needs serious reconstruction. If I were Ashley, I'd take the corporate or East Coast job all day.

  4. If Ashley is smart he will hold out on signing a new deal until KGO commits to dumping Sze and Daetz, and brings in some real talent. If KGO doesn't make significant moves, ratings will continue to be poor.

    2. Am I missing something??...WTF, Lim just destroys Grandma Cacklin' Sze and Vanilla Daetz in every possible category. It's as if KGO is tanking on purpose!

    3. I doubt KGO has the funds to lure Heather Holmes over from KTVU. She's super hot, has a great, conversational delivery, and honestly, she's a pro, unlike the cactus leaguers, Sze and Daetz. I do like Dion Lim, but there's little hope for the nose-diving KGO-TV.

  6. 1. The A's and 610. Okay, maybe. It ain't the signal it was when Family Life bought it in 2005. Even when they fix what's rotted in 13 years. And when the A's aren't playing, it kinda has to be another sportstalk station. Which we don't much need.

    2. KGO/Ashley. Dan's good. But nobody's gonna drop 7 figures on a local anchor. Those days are gone. Frankly, the $600K he's getting now is pretty close to a miracle.
