Sure miss the old "Westlake Joes", absolutely the best, also the "US Restaurant" in North Beach SF, good old days.....don't get me started on presently "phamtom" Fishermans Wharf
My roommate back in 1989 was the head chef at Ernie’s. I never ate there but after the earthquake in ‘89 with electricity down all the staff unloaded the fridges. We ate like kings for several days. Rib eyes and big prawns were on the menu at our house.
Westlake Joe's was a great Union restaurant back in the day until the present owners bought it. They "remodeled" for a year and a day so they could go non-union and dump some hard working union members who had given most of their lives to the old owners.
@ 6:48 Ernie's back in the day was famous with the tourists, they absolutely love it sitting outside and watched the world go by; then it was sold to an Asian Lady and went downhill faster than sliding telegraph Hill, sad....
@ 6:48 The US Restaurant was the best, home style cooking, these ladies are amazing! They served most items not found today: Fried calamari, stewed rabbit, bacala in tomato sauce, veal parmesana, veal osso bucco, corned beef, hungry yet?
KCBS sent a reporter to the opening and Brett Burkhart covered the fire story. Brett's wife just happens to be the spokeswoman for --wait for it--the city of Walnut Creek. You can bet the media will.head back.out for the RE-OPENING.
A fire breaks out in the opening days amidst a massive and shameless PR blitz to promote the restaurant to anyone willing to listen. That’s highly suspicious especially when you read the location and nature of the fire - very easily and quickly put out. I can see the headline now ‘firefighters quickly extinguish fire at Original Joes in Walnut Creek’…and then “hey honey, did you know there’s an original joes in Walnut Creek?”
You know what they say, any publicity is good publicity.
You couldn't be further from the truth. The fire was legit. I know the owners. They are quite shaken by this. Comments like yours shows the low IQ of many of the listeners and commenters of this site...Just wow...
Lately it feels like half the “news” on local TV is just filler about some restaurant opening, closing, or throwing together a gimmicky “event.” This is press-release journalism, plain and simple. In the old days, businesses at least had to send an actual press release. Now they just tag on SFGate, KTVU, or ABC7 on an Instagram post and call it a day.
And because these stories are effortless clickbait, newsrooms drown in them and happily shovel them onto the air like it’s real reporting. It’s embarrassing—free advertising dressed up as journalism, and the stations are dumb enough to play along.
But...but...but...the 5-7 minute "Check Please Bay Area" segment I just watched, which would normally be a perfect promotional vehicle, ended with "This restaurant has closed permanently." So why bother running it, KQED?
Nothing original anymore including original joes. The insulated fools in WC can all be seen in the fake original joes. Never set foot in the real one in the TL. What’s next reinvent Clown Alley burgers in Lafayette? It’s over!

On SFGate, it doesn’t even need to be a Bay Area restaurant that gets touted. I’ve seen all up and down the coast.
