Chip Franklin Has Been Shown the Door at KGO Radio; Rothmann Takes Over 4-7 PM

Chip Franklin is apparently OUT at KGO Radio.

KGO has removed Franklin from its weekday schedule. Nothing is official but it appears Chip was given a Cumulus Christmas present: parting gifts, personal style. Boy does Cumulus work wonders during the holiday season.

I emailed Chip and so far, heard nothing. Ditto KGO's program czar, Lee Hammer who might not be in the mood to chat with me, just a hunch.

Franklin was one of 810 AM (by KGO standards) highest-paid talkers which ultimately spelled his doom. You are on a hit list if you make too much money at KGO because too much dough at Cumulus is no-no. Chip Franklin is the latest victim.

John Rothmann, who was a 6-9 PM talker is now scheduled to take Franklin's PM (4-7 PM) gig.

  2. That's too bad for KGO listeners. They should have removed Medoro and put Franklin in the morning slot. Franklin was their number one AD and commercial guy. He had more commercial's than all the others combined.

    3. I ws shocked Chip got fired. He was the best and told it like it is! Pat only talks about COVID. We are all sick to death of hearing about it. PLEASE move on to something else. I have hardly listed to Pat since her fav topic is COVID! Also she doesn't have the magic that Chip had. She's mostly boring andn I hardly listen anymore and I've been a KGO listener from Ronn Owen days and Dr. Dean Adele. No more. John is worth listening to but he's the only one. Not happy that Chip is gone.

    2. I wish Rothmann would stop taking calls from (QE) Rob from Richmond and Michael from Cotati. When he takes their calls I turn off the radio. I hate when Rothmann and callers raise their voices trying to make a point. It makes for awful radio.

  4. Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff. I haven't listened to that blowhard Rothman in years. He's terrible and I'm liberal! I know KGO died many times before but if KGO were a cat this would be the tenth time.

  5. Welp, looks like all that White Privelege he used to brag about having wasn't enough to save his sorry little ass. I admit it will be nice to hear something other than Orange man bad, covid and "white people are racist" in the 4 to 7pm slot.

    1. You’re right! Chip used to talk about white privilege, but the reason is that he felt bad about other races having to put up with the systemic racism in our country! I’m a brown citizen and have seen the white privilege he referred to and have experienced the racism against other races. I’m sure you are not aware of white privilege because you take it for granted!

    2. You must confuse Chip with someone else on another station. Money problems in the industry cause these sad losses. Chip is a decent, smart, skilled talk host. We will dearly miss him.

    3. We will miss Chip - a gentleman, smart, capable, wide-ranging mind. He will be an asset wherever he goes.

  8. He is a good radio host who brought up provocative topics. They will hire someone like him to fill John's slot. Or maybe go for a nationally syndicated show, which will lose the local flavor.

  9. A shame, I just got used to Chip. He was very lame to only take a caller once an hour in the final 3 minutes before the news but he'll be fine. Happy John is moving earlier, also hoping they have someone in house take over at 7pm now instead of more of that paid right wing John Batchelor

    2. Merrill is awful; he tries too hard as if he took a course in Talk Show Hosting 101. Shouting is not entertaining in San Francisco. He and Chip don't belong on the West Coast. Both self-proclaimed comedians who aren't funny. KGO needs to cough up some cash and get better talent.

  14. I actually like Chip, I didn't in the beginnig, but he kind of grew on me. Nikki Medoro has not manage to do that, I listen a little, but often switch to Armstrong and Getty, they are not as funny as they use to be, seem like they have gotten more political and right wing, they use to be fun and more middle of the road. Anyway, so not much to listen to in the morning, I'm surprised Chip was let go instead of Nikki, does she have better ratings? I doubt it, she talks too much about herself, she does not let anyone talk too much including callers and her co-host, and on some subject she is very ignorant.

  15. I didn't listen to Chip all the time, since often I'm working at those hours or I was running errands, so in and out of the car, I did like his show, although John was always my favorite. I'm sorry John is moving to earlier hours, it means the days I work I won't be able to hear him. I work retail, so often I work to 6 or 7 p.m. or later, but I often caught most of John's show or the last few hours, now I will mostly be able to hear him on my days off, bummer.

    1. Everyone keeps saying "John moving to Chip's 4-7 slot."
      CHIP'S SLOT WAS 3-6!!! JOHN WAS 6-9!!
Pat was 12-3, and I never got to hear her whole program (she's my favorite), because I have spotty reception inside my house, can listen for 10-20 min at a time when running around. John took Chip"s hours of 4-6; I guess Pat got an additional hour. 12-4 instead of 12-3? I have been too busy to even tune in. Maybe they thought December is a busy month, and we wouldn't notice?

So, Pat gained an hour; John scooted his show back 2 hrs? I feel like there's an hour or two not accounted for.

    2. KGO has been poor and lame since the retirement of Eason,
and the crucifixion of Bernie Ward. Bernie despite his issues was the finest host on KGO. Finest mind on west coast radio. Would love to hear him again.

  16. Does this mean Chip will go back to San Diego and become a conservative host again?

  20. Chip wasn't the only one sacked...

  21. Chippie was horrible, not to mention shallow as hell. Dude thought reading the Wahington Post with his morning latte made him informed. He rarely did any homework with his interviews, witness all the Bay Area members of congress he introduced by their district number. Zero idea where they were located. Ro Khanna is in the HEART OF SILICON VALLEY, but Chippie never mentioned the where. Neither did he integrate into the conversation what committees they were on. That matters, not crap they have little influence on. But especially Chip was your classic grifter that rode into town. He rarely discussed local issues but no wonder he was maski-masked and locked up broadcasting from his basement for over a year. Not only that, he was clueless on the conservative vein that runs in California once you get ten miles away from. the interstate. Anyone elso notice his total inablity to hold a conversation with anyone that took issue with Chip? Chip: part of the expert class and a legend in his own mind. In reality, Chip was an insult to loyal KGO and Bay Area listeners

  22. Doesn't make sense: he sold more commercial time than the other hosts by far, but typical Cum-u-less move. What a poorly run company they are! Gonna miss Chip, I guess he pissed off too many Angry White Men with his bleeding heart 'librul' act. I like Rothmann but he can be kind of pedantic and bland, and I get tired of him trying to talk sense into these brainwashed 'conservative' dimwits who make up about 95% of his callers.

    1. @ 11:28...I like Rothmann, a good man, but WISH he wouldn't try to make "exciting" radio by constantly taking calls from lunatic Trumpists (apologies for the oxymoron). He'll never convert them and it's not entertaining.

  24. Wild prediction--The owner of WABC is syndicating most of their programming to other stations. Some of their talk hosts are Rudy Giulani & Judge Jeannine Pirro. Could WABC's owner buy KGO or KSFO and put that programming on?? WABC was once owned by Cumulus.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I hope not, all we need in this area is another right wing nut job, which I consider both Giulani and Pirro to be. Before some of you jump on me about being one sided, I often listen to Tom Sullivan who is conservative, but I consider him a reasonable conservative, use to like Michael Medved when he was heard in this area.

  26. Very sad and disgusted.   Was comfortable with  the lineup but now Chip has been let go and the Ramsey show will be going on at 7p;m after John Rothmann's 4 to 7.  Dave Ramsey, a financial advisor, is a bit too right and religious for me.  That will make almost 12 hrs straight of republican leaning, as coast to coast with George Noorey, of which I can not stand is also republican leaning.  Kgo tries to make a family out of the hosts with the audience, but that does not work when one host is ripped out in order to make more money.  I forgave KGO for the horrific firings of most hosts back in '12, but now have no trust with them. KGO is now off my pre set on boe speaker.

    1. Dave Ramsey gives good financial advice, and he seem like a nice person. I don't follow his advice 100%, but some of it, such as mostly paying cash for everyday purchases. I do have a few credit cards, but pay them off each month, actually there is only one I use on a regural basis that is my Macy's card, because I'm an employee that is the only way I get my 20 percent discount, I do pay it off every month. I save a little every paycheck and add to my 401K every week. I agree with he is a little right wing, but he does not get into politics much, and when Trump was president he was very critical of all the name calling. Ramsey had worked with Elizabeth Warren, and although he disagrees with her politics, he acknowledge that she was a very bright woman, and wouldn't put up with any name calling. All this aside he is on both a Sacramento station and KSFO, so he has a presence in this area, unless someone else is going to be on KSFO in that time slot.

  27. Very sorry to Chip go. I looked forward to 3pm. His show popped with energy and relevance. He always had the perfect blend of what matters with a dash of TMZ flavor thrown in. He was funny too.

  28. I actually liked Chip but he was guilty of the same name calling and racist behavior he claimed to despise on the part of Republicans. I would cringe when he would refer to southern state Trump supporters as "rednecks" and "hillbillies". He "hated" a lot of things, including religion, and his self-loathing of white men "of privilege" alienated half his audience.

  32. By the comments everyone has has a yeah or nay opinion of all the KGO talent...and that is good. It is what you want...unlike the right wing that spouts lies all the time. Chip was not good for the 12 noon slot that followed Ronn Owens...but I like him when it was him and Nikki, they were a good team. I did like him for the 3-6 pm slot as it was good balance between Pat and John (who I like very much...they are great). I love Mark Thompson. He is spot on and damn funny. Not sure what will happen after 7 pm...wish John R ran to 8 pm...it feels like the right thing. Losing a job sucks and I wish the best to Chip.

  33. I am very sad and disappointed that KGO let Chip Franklin go. I've enjoyed Chip's broadcast for many years. He is way more interesting and entertaining than Nikki Medoro. If anything, they should put Chip in the 6-10 AM slot and let Nikki go. I wish Chip all the best!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks for the explanation. No wonder KGO didn't give listeners the benefit of ANY updates about the very sudden programming changes. I respect John Rothmann, and like his program, but for me, Chip Franklin was the draw in late afternoon. I even put up with those asinine Kars for Kids commercials during his program. All I can say, KGO, is that if Chip shows up on another station at a time of day when I can listen, I will gladly and hastily shut off KGO, and switch to whatever station he is broadcasting on. Actually, I'm probably not going to listen to KGO much anymore at all. It is not about KGO, it is about the people who work for KGO, and bring the best material to listeners. You lost a LOT, when you lost Chip Franklin, KGO. You just don't seem to learn. And things are different these days. Listeners have more choices. I do not want to disrespect any of the other broadcasters, but I used to come home from work, and turn KGO on right away to catch what I could of Chip's show. Now, I might not bother to turn anything on. It could make my evening so much more pleasant to not have to listen to those horrible commercials.

  40. Pat is the best of them by a sizeable margin. True, she gives contrary callers short shrift, but responds with the most articulate, passionate and knowledgeable rebuttals. I listen to John, agree with his take on virtually everything, but think he's patronizing, pompous and whiney. Will miss Chip, but was becoming impatient with his interviewing style, when he talked as much or more than the guest. Not a Nikki fan; sounds too chattery, lacking real focus. Not a Thompson fan; glorified disc jockey.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nikki is a ninny. Chip always in love with his own opinions and a member of the gang who couldn't shoot straight. Pat, no comment. they did need a shake up. Give Mark Thompson and extra hour and find someone new for Chips slot. i mean really new. so tired of Chips obsession with Trump even after he wasn't in office. I bet Chip an expensive bottle of Scotch that he couldn't go one program without mentioning the word "Trump" a least he was honest in not taking the bet because he really couldn't do it....enuff said. bye chip.

  42. I used to be an on-air radio personality. Chip was (is) quite good at it. He should have remained. However, I CANNOT say the same about Nikki Meduro. Mercy, she's awful (yes, AWFUL). Endless navel gazing about herself & her kids (uninteresting & unlistenable). She clearly lacks expertise in any area of use for her program, never knows anything, so it's constant prattling on about...herself or what she "feels," about topics. All mind-numbing nonsense. Hence, why I no longer listen. Once again, Chip deserved to stay, he's a PROFESSIONAL broadcaster. Best of luck to him.

    1. Agreed! Chip not only interrupted callers, he rudely called them morons if they happened to have differing opinions. Just a couple of days prior to showing Chip the door, he told a caller that he wished he had never taken his call and quickly hung up on him. Chip lacked the ability, let alone decency,to discuss why he thought the caller was wrong with his belief that the majority of people who died of covid had other life-threatening issues. Instead, he just hung up on him. I thought KGO had enough of Chip's rudeness and still believe it. Good riddance,Chip!

    2. Disagree in a respectful way? Guess you never listen to Mark Levin, or Michael Savage when he was on radio, Savage had big ratings, although I never cared for him. Chip was never as rude and disrespectful as Levin or Savage. Or what about Ray Tallifero, or even Gene Burns, Gene was a class act, he didn't take to name calling, but when dealing with an especially ignorant caller he let it rip.

    3. I believe, actually according to Rich, Ronn was kept on in 2011 and beyond, because his contract was written such that it would have cost Cumulus more to buy him out than to keep him on, and back then I believe he had big ratings. I don't think host are let go because they are disrespectful to callers, if you listen to some right wing hosts that seems be the norm for some.

I called him once and he first muted me, then hung up on me and told the whole audience that I had hung up. Liar!! This is how he handles people who are informed and can take him to task! Chip I never called, nor esp when he was with Nicki, they were adept at striking out callers, with pre-fab strikes outs. Chips politics could not bear so I did not listen, but sometimes did anyway and I can only say he was good 'at his job' as talk host. Always appreciate a host who can do humor, as Mark Thompson who really is their best right now. I do miss the old days though- of a weekend programming, does anyone remember Korel? - David Lazarus? etc. Miss the mid-day Drew Pinsky so much. He's A-political, not emotional just reasoned instead, what we need. Between Chip and Nicki, I would have kept Chip and leave Nicki to the news and her ample time off!! Finally now, their programming and time slops is totally screwed up and awkward. I want Bachelor at 9pm! Most of all, I want Coast to Coast radio, esp Cristmas eve KGO!! Please no music all night!

  69. KGO is no longer the local station it once was. With all the syndicated night time shows it is no longer locally relevant from 7:00 pm until 6:00 am. Disturbing.
This station started to fall apart a decade ago. Not a particular fan of Chip because he was too invested in his point of view to listen to guests or callers but he was tolerable to some degree. Mark Thompson reminds me of a side show barker with his canned "why not just text it" kind of antics and SHOUT OUT ... Seriously? And he too is rather self impressed. "I'm this," "I am friends with so and so," "I used to..." "I did this commercial," I am going to be featured..." I. I. I. ~~ What hosts of the past spent so much energy name dropping? It is tiring. It's boring. Too bad. So sad.

  70. Remember Chip once endorse MyPillows. Rothmann was once interesting to listen too. But when he knows he is the smartest guy in the room with no flexiblity. KGO is Dead

  71. John Rothman is Chicken Little....Imagine John and His wife both doing commercials for Sea Crane radio and we are the WHITE PRIVILEGED ones.
Nikki is the master of illusion giving us 1:45 worth of a subject before moving on. Image covering a story like the San Francisco Schools not having heat in their classrooms or having 125 and 146 million dollar deficits over the next 2 years yet the governor boats we have a 33 billion dollar surplus. Glad Chip is gone and Mark Thompsons career seems to focus on fresh faced Albert getting free airtime for worthless garbage. Listen carefully tomorrow and you might feel Pat get nervous when she tries to keep her job to put her 3 kids through college. All 5 of them calling the audience White Privileged while they refuse to make way for the return of Brian Copeland. You can only attack your audience so much before management wakes up.

  72. This is like trading your star player and getting nothing in return. You either loved Chip or hated him. Not many people in between. If anyone should see the door it's whoever is in charge of advertising. They need some big corporations to run ads.

  73. Can't listen to Medoro. Thurston just rants and I cannot stand her slanted viewpoints of little practical value, plus she just seems clueless (read up on topics before coming on the air). Thompson is a refreshing break between Medoro and Thurston. Rothmann tries to hard to be "balanced", it gets too predictable when he accepts right-wing calls. KGO radio after 7pm is just crap. If I want to catch up with Batchelor, I will listen to his internet podcasts, where I can filter out the right-wing stuff and focus on John's excellent reviews on books, history topics and his insightful interviews with authors.

  74. Well I guess KGO has taken a step in the right direction now if they could right the listing ship and have diverse midsection hosts during the day it might bring back talk radio. Podcasts are so much better but the one thing they miss is the local connection.

  75. Won’t be listening to KGO anymore - the format of music on 10/6 is just awful. If Cumulus is the largest radio operator in the country why are they having money problems?? Simple - total mismanagement by the overpaid top executives who earn salaries too generous for their inept capabilities. As to the variety of program hosts, I would have to agree with what many have stated that everything after 7 PM was mostly pathetic; and weekend offerings were even worse. As to the weekday offerings, I liked some hosts but not others, so just didn’t tune in during their shows. I’ll miss John Rothmann as I appreciate his well-informed historical points - I lived most of his references and my own personal opinions have been formed on past events. I also miss Brian Copeland, KGO was foolish to let him go. Sad, sad, sad a once great radio station has gone WAY south in a proverbially hand basket !
