*Bridge over Troubled Waters: Current Chronicle writing journalists --the union hasn't put out the word yet but I will: the newspaper world and print people are having a rough time; I'm sure you know that chip and paper don't mix. No matter how much you fancy up print with bright pictures and dog stories, it ain't profitable. Tough world, the newspaper biz.

Herb Caen
*Herb Caen talked about the "Manhattenization" of Downtown SF and it has taken place before our eyes. The obscene Salesforce Tower (or, as I call it, a 61-story pencil with lights) has completely obliterated the Pyramid and BofA building. I used to love to go across the bridge and walk around the city but now I hate it. Dust, no parking, 108 dollar tickets and eternal traffic nightmare. I'll take Oakland any day (or night) which will now awaken the anti-Oakland trolls.

Actually, Oakland is on a roll, especially the restaurants, so don't bitch.

*Megan Goldsby is a fairly decent reporter and sometimes anchor at KCBS. I've said as much.

Megan Goldsby
But hearing her every other minute on this story/that story., apples, onions, tomatoes, etc I've grown increasingly irritated over this mass overuse which defeats the purpose. I'm not the only disgruntled observer, talk to the newsroom folks.

*Reason number 3456 that I can't stomach Gary Radnich on KNBR; Raddy, I speculated might talk for a few minutes on the passing of former KRON/ABC anchor, Sylvia Chase, instead gave a lame thirty seconds or so on Ms. Chase and it was cheaper then Raddy's dog poops. What a putz.

Doug Harvill
*Today's broadcast quiz: What are Cumulus' SF Market Mgr, Doug Harvill, duties? A. shuffle papers that Lee Hammer doesn't shuffle? B. Offer illegitimate budgets to would-be programming execs? C. Kiss the ass of Ben Fong- Torres? D. Grow a beard and look "important" and "dignified."? E. All of the above?

*ADD Harvill: Doug, some midday thought from your onetime media buddy/blogger: CUT THE BS. Stop the corporate geek shit and quit trying to make something of the day-old oatmeal they gave you. Grow a pair, Doug! Do something and quit pretending to be gentleman Doug. You are not that person and your personal slime is so unbecoming. I can say that, Doug, because I know 100 percent what is taking place there; you know it and I know it. It's all a pile of dog-doo and no matter how many time you try to place a happy face on it, Doug, it's still dog crap. You can spin it to Ben Fong and kiss his butt and fool his (and yours too) Facebook sycophants but you can't fool me. Years ago, Doug, when you and I talked, we spoke glowingly about the business and I sort of respected you. Now? Gees Doug, I hope you love your trivial pursuit at the Cloud company; really beyond embarrassing --post this reality check, Doug, I dare you. The truth hurts.

Jobena Fortsen
*Jobena Fortson of ABC7 did a live shot Sunday from the Embarcadero with rain and wind hitting her face like a full frontal force; hey, Madame Fortsen, you did good; I'm impressed and not just for the difficult live shot.

*Funny, this weather. All we ever hear is drought, drought, drought, and when the floods start, too much rain. It's a waste of time really. We should tell the TV/Radio weather minions that we have new normal weather conditions here (and beyond) and not worry anymore if it doesn't rain in November and starts flooding in late December, January. Same too when it gets over 100 in July, August, and September/October. Truth is, there is no such thing as "normal weather" anymore.

*Dear KCBS overnighter, Peter Finch: Your pathetic use of the word, "degrees" is horrible. You don't have to say, "57 degrees, 61 degrees, 58 degrees, etc" Holy cow, Finch, do you realize how stupid that sounds? STOP. Enough already.

Image result for Sexy woman at Tadich Grill, SF*A woman of considerable power in the TV broadcast biz was with a guy the other day at Tadich; no big deal but the guy in question wasn't her husband; no big deal only the twosome were in the back area booth with the curtains drawn. I sure hope they were talking about the petrale sole if you know what I mean and I think you do.

QUICK SHOTS...

*More screen prominence and about time: KTVU's underrated Allie Rasmus.

*Fake homage: much of the masses this Saturday at the Ray Taliaferro memorial. First off, I'm sorry about Ray's passing. It's sad and still a giant mystery.

I'm disgusted over the frauds that will speak glowingly of Ray who quietly had no use for Ray. Ray was a different cat; a total genuine man in a time when originality counted and was cool.

Ray was consistent. Not everyone's favorite because he was so off the beaten path. Taliaferro was unique and creative and damn hysterical at times if you knew most of his show was entertaining shtick but he knew how to move the needle in the middle of the night and that's saying something.

Ray Taliaferro
The one-time, morning fake known as Ron Lowenstein, a speaker, will remark endlessly about the "love" and admiration. Truth is, Ray HATED Ronn and Ronn knew it. That's the god's honest truth, folks, the reason why you come here. Ronn will try to be his usual unfunny self at the podium and later take Jack Swanson to lunch at North Beach where further BS will haunt the dining room. NO, RONNO, I will never forget the crap you said about Ray Taliaferro.

Never.

  1. Rich, thanks for the update on Peter Finch. We worked together at KMEL and KGO and I recently wondered where he was. By the way, the repeated use of "degrees" is pretty a pretty common verbal crutch - I confess I leaned on it myself. Peter's a solid reporter and all around good guy, so he gets a pass from here!

Um Gowa, Da Wonda: Seems like the "I's" have it! I mean, it's only a question, you know, of degree. I mean, absolutely, casual youthful language use by we "news professionals" is really OK. What's not to like, you know. I mean, you know, not everyone is old & learned in their ways, really. I mean, you know, it's hard to read those teleprompters and computer print-outs sometimes. The words are kinda close, you know, and I absolutely haven't had my coffee fix yet! I mean, come on, we can't all be Fraser Smith with the Power News! Um Gowa, please dub your KROQ AM/FM mid 70s air tapes & donate clean copy to the Rich Lieberman Media Archives! We'd then, you know, have an excellent example of how to, you know, read the news & weather both before & after verbal crutchism. Hey, hey, back in the day, even Mick Jagger recognized that the airwaves flowed... R.I.P Ray T. Subpoena the "wife", follow up, and, my good sir, "just give us some truth, all we want is the truth"!!

    3. Roll another one, (absolutely) just like the other one. (Like) You've been (you know) hanging on to it, and I (for) sure would (you know), (absolutely) like a hit. Don't bogart the verbal crutches, my friend, pass them over to me...

  2. BOOM! Outstanding post. And if you bring up the lofty-voiced Peter Finch and his use of "degrees," how about Benny Fong crying over someone frequently using the word "tonight" in his Sunday dribble yesterday. This comes from the man who is having an insecurity fest and can't avoid using the pronoun "I" in his column as if he's God. Kinda like the kettle calling the pot black, don't you think?

  3. Right on about phony Ronnn. Ray wasn't the only one at KGO who had no use for Ronnn. But Ronn was the instigator of the hatred in all of it. I hope someone at the memorial will call out the BS and, for Ray's sake, tell it like it was!

Meanwhile, we wait on any further news about the tragic and probable criminal actions in Ray's death. His "wife" is the obvious suspect in malicious behavior. She was caught lying from the start. Questions abound. I hope to God there are competent people behind this searching for the truth. Ray's son hired the private investigator but I fear it's not enough. For someone like Ray who lived for exposing truth and demanding justice this is such cruel irony to have his life end this way in doubt and conspiracy.

    1. Which is why the Commonwealth Club didn't invite me to speak because they know (and some KGO radio people like yourself) that I know the real deal and truth. Thanks for your posting.

    2. Yes. We're all sure thats the reason why they didn't invite you to speak. I hear they didn't invite Perez Hilton either.

    3. aBout what, precisely did Ray's wife "lie"? It would seem pretty obvious that the son who didn't know the new wife, but now has hired a PI to investigate his father's death, wasn't very close to daddy. The concern now is likely just about the estate. If Ray didn't leave testamentary documents, everything goes to the wife.

  4. You're missing the big story at the Chronicle -- the break up of Matier & Ross! When I opened Sunday's Chron, there was Phil's picture on the column, no Ross.

Matier and Ross have been a couple, in the columnist sense of the word, since the 1990s when they were at the Hearst-owned Examiner. There's been no word in the Chron about why they split up.

    Possible theories:

    1. Maybe Ross was jealous of all the TV and radio time Matier gets.

    2. Perhaps Matier was cheating with another columnist. Maybe one day Ross walked into the newsroom and saw Matier exchanging carbon paper with Leah Garchik?

    3. Maybe Ross was fed up that there's another guy there also named Andrew Ross in the newsroom, and their mail would always get mixed up.

    4. Was Ross upset about the long, starry eyed talks Matier would have with Willie Brown. And they never tried to hide their relationship. Sometimes they put it right out there by going on TV together (though on Channel 5, the ratings are so low that you could say they're still keeping it on the down low.) I don't think Willie was Matier's type, but you never know.

Who will get custody of their children? Who will raise young Heather Knight or little Joe Garofoli?

Rich, you need to find out why they split up. If you don't, I'll be calling TMZ!

    1. Hate to break up your conspiratorial mind but Andy Ross retired and said so in the paper (and on-line) and I believe him. He worked with Phil many years and decided it was time to go and until further notice, I don't believe there's any reason other then that.

Jon Carroll and Chuck Nevius? That's another story.

      Delete
    2. Too bad. Andy was the real brains behind that combo. Phil was more photogenic, so he got the accolades.

  5. I heard Radnich mention chase. What's the problem? Read the room, Rich. God bless her but nobody cares in todays Bay Area. You yourself said she was only here for a cup of coffee. Are you upset because he didn't mention you and Larry King? Is that the real reason behind the unwarranted hate? It just seems like you love to have a reason, any reason, to pile on the hate.

    1. Rich loves to live in the past, when things were better for him. If you're not there with him, if you've moved on, you're a terrible person. Thing is, if he'd get out of his apartment, go outside, talk to people now, maybe he wouldn't be stuck in the "good ol' days," which really weren't all that good, when you look at it objectively. Things in the media biz have always sucked. That's true of any business where barriers to entry are low.

    3. I was avid listener of KNBR, have not listen to them now for a couple of year. Not that the Game has been perfect, morning show is mostly good, other that Joe repeats himself 15 times in a 30 second period, is the redundancy for the listeners or is it a compulsive disorder. Also shut D Bruce off yesterday when he puts on the Spanish play by play announcers, once is ok but repeatedly is annoying.

    4. The best sports radio show currently is 95.7 The Game's Warriors This Week with Matt Steinmetz and John Dickinson. They are analytical and interview relevant broadcasters and journalists and do it without the soundboard sound effects. Nothing on KNBR comes close.

  7. Megan Goldsby is MUCH more tolerable to me than a relative newcomer at KCBS: Kerry Hudasek (not sure of the spelling....). The tenor of her voice sounds like she's just invested a huge amount of helium.....so squeaky-high-pitched!! And I love the way she signs off: Kerry Hudasek - KCB-ass.....(she's almost as irritating to listen to as the new weather person - I think it's Mary Lee? She got her voice the same place Hudasek got hers....

  8. Disagree about Allie Rasmus...She's picked up some of Sal's bad habits like looking at a monitor instead of the camera when nothing is really going on and all the viewer can see is the whites of their eyes. MO2 needs someone else to do traffic...she has no "traffic authority" no gravitas.
