Classy Wayne Walker

Hard to believe it's been 22 years since Wayne Walker's retirement from KPIX...for my money, Wayne was the BEST TV Sports anchor in the Bay Area.  He was steady as they come; a complete professional; a true gentleman too and classy as all get go.

It was revealed not too long ago Walker is battling Parkinson's Disease. We wish him the best.

    1. Back in the day when news people actually liked each other. Not so much back biting. My Dad always liked him. Wishing Wayne the best!

    2. Indeed. Watched him growing up and shook his hand at Candlestick, he stopped and we talked for a minute when he could have easily moved on.

Don't know the reason but it seems he left the stage too early, which I admire instead of hanging on for the last buck like the KRON "Sports director".

  3. He was the gold standard as a sports caster. I remember him along with Dave, Wendy and Joel as the stellar news team on 5.

    1. Unfortunately, Parkinson's seems to be just one of the results of head trauma NFL players encounter. I'm old enough to remember opening up packs of Topps football cards and sometimes getting a Wayne Walker card.

  5. I agree. He was the best.

One footnote about Walker, and another reason why I liked him:

For years after the Seals moved, Wayne was the only local sports anchor who regularly reported on NHL action. During that era, it was nice to see highlights from two of the great North American hockey dynasties (the Islanders and the Oilers), and to stay in touch with the sport in general.

  8. Back when Radnich was good, he used to tease "NHL hilites"...and just show 15-seconds of hockey fights.

    It was pretty funny.

  9. You nailed them all, especially immature A&G , Kate Scott...and everyone on KNBR bought and paid for,eg kruk and kuip lead the way, never a bad word about the over rated PEDed Jints. LURIE at least has good interviews and stays off liberal SF politics though he and others are pro PEDs

  11. The video clip was a classic look at when TV journalism and the broadcasters were truly professional. Wayne Walker was then and still is the gold standard for sports anchoring. Seeing the great Dave McElhatton and wonderful Kate Kelly reminded me of how anchors and reporters were skilled journalists with a great sense of integrity. Group W pushed ABC7, KRON and KTVU back then so the news reporting was solid at all stations.

  13. Wayne was simply the best "Sports Director" that the San Francisco market ever had and there has been no one close since ... His Q scores were off the charts and he had such a broad based appeal. More importantly he was and still is a very classy man ...
