Rendon and Mallicoat Offer Fresher KTVU 'MO2' Weekend; Jon Miller, Giants' PBP Broadcaster In Love With Himself; KNBR's Krueger Says Dave Flemming Could Become Next Vin Scully; Don't Phuck With KCBS' Melissa Culross; Send The 'Foodie Chap' To a Deserted Island; 415 Media Secret Admirer Short; Saturday Late Summer Stuffer

Saturday's KTVU "Mornings on Two" was a little fresher and crisper; anchors Cristina Rendon and Frank Mallicoat broadcast from Jack London Square with a solid, fast-paced, brighter, livelier and frankly, more compelling news program.

In other words, regular weekend news reader, Claudine Wong was absent.

Frank Mallicoat
I've always liked Rendon; she's calm and casual and has a nice, sincere delivery even with Channel 2's Fox-infused happy chit-chat/talk. That's not to say Wong isn't sincere; she just comes across as sappy and overindulgent --not exactly the type of person you want to watch starting your day off.

Mallicoat, who's been run all over the timeslots from morning, midday and evening works better in the AM; he's also fresh and spirited and can get away with being "Mr. Chirpy" because he's a naturally high-energy guy and it shows on KTVU, I just wish they'd leave him on MO2 permanently.

*Still clinging to the belief that young people listen to AM Radio, KGO foolishly put on moronic, unfunny, uninformed, comedienne, Maureen Langan. I have no idea why KGO thinks this New Jersey yenta is funny, she's not, worse yet, she doesn't know a damn thing about politics when discussing the election.
What a joke.

Harsh? Oh, a tad.

*I didn't know it was considered unpatriotic to criticize Giants' announcer, Jon Miller. Miller has worn on me lately --he used to be one of the very best (and still is) but Miller has apparently fallen in love with himself and thinks he's the star. Seriously, take a listen to the game sometime and see how much Miller talks, mostly stories that were once funny are now bordering on boring and tiresome.

Another constant irritant with Miller (and the other guys too) is his blatant disregard for giving the score! Again, take some time, listen to a broadcast and count the minutes before a score update is given. It drives me nuts --I think it was Lon Simmons who said "you can never give the score too many times." Miller apparently didn't get the memo.

*Foolish remark of the century award: KNBR tonsil, Larry Krueger, saying Dave Flemming has the chops to become the next Vin Scully

*Time to send the "Foodie Chap" away to a deserted island, God, that guy is annoying.

*Mystery woman who is sexy as all get-go, KCBS anchor/reporter, Melissa Culross. Insiders at CBS tell me this veteran anchor has extreme influence at the station and if you dare think otherwise, Culross could make your life miserable, sort of.

*In other words, watch out Bristow.

*KNBR, which made millions of dollars last year and pays out $13 an hour to some of its producers and on-air staff has begun running embarrassing 15-minute paid sports shills on its primetime shows.

Worse yet, the shows are unintentionally funny and sound like the carnival barkers yelling at you in front of North Beach strip clubs.

Way to go, Lee Hammer, part of the Cumulus SF mafia.

Jim Gabbert
*An idea that makes too much sense therefore will not happen: James Gabbert, who is worth about $300 million, give or take a million, could write a check for KFRC right now and turn it into an old-style KGO complete with entertaining, solid, interesting content.

He could get John Rothmann and Bill Wattenberg on the air; Ray Taliaferro too. Hire a guy like, say, Bob Sarlatte and/or Will Durst --get sports people like Rich Walcoff and Lowell Cohn --in other words, a refreshing, cool, authentic and intriguing station with Bay Area people and broadcasters --a real radio station with real people.

But Gabbert doesn't like to spend money these days unless it involves airplanes and Mexican tech vacations.

Reminds me of the joke that made the rounds back when Gabbert owned TV20: "Why does Gabbert use dogs for the KOFY Station ID?" So he doesn't have to pay 'em.

*Can I say it again? Jessica Castro --KGO-TV's Breaking News anchor: whoa!

*I've encountered a rather aggressive woman correspondent in local TV News who insists on uber-emailing me and wanting frequent cocktail dates at some off-the-beaten-path SF/Eastbay watering holes.

She's single, very young and eager and wants some feedback. Fine. No conflict of interest because I've yet to write about her and therefore, all fair game, right? Wrong.

The chosen one has gone off script and has now infused some vodka into the situation and biz things have become more personal.

I don't mind providing advice to an up-and-comer but when the skirts have become shorter and the heels a bit higher, I am now very suspicious and perplexed.

This story has a happy ending as the young pup merely wanted some action on the side but when I balked and told her about possible repercussions, she retreated and went back to base camp.

I'm happy, she's happy.

And that's the way it should always be, that said, I was humbled.

  2. The late great radio baseball announcer, Red Barber used to keep an egg timer next to his mic so he would give the score then flip it.. and repeat throughout the game.. might be time to bring back that idea, Mr. Miller...duh

  3. I wish he would put his MLB app in his pocket. Who cares what the mph speed off bat is, or "according to the MLB app, that ball traveled 423 ft." And then he disputes it!

  4. What has made Vin Scully unique is the fact that he began calling Dodgers games straight out of Fordham college at the age of 22!

  7. Culross has always been a decent reporter, but I've seen toothpicks with better weight. I wonder what will happen when the first dispute between Culross and Swanson takes place.
BTW, while Bay fans will always despise the Dodgers team, two words as to why Vin Scully will be forever revered here - The Catch.

    1. Yes, he announced that game, but he was not equal to Pat Summerall in term of football broadcasting. He was too associated with LA for me to embrace him doing Niner games, especially that one when Dallas was still America's Team and garnered national media favor over our upstart team.

    2. You are an idiot if you can't embrace Vin Scully. Associated with LA... Get the fuck outta here!

  8. not only miller, when pence hit home run Kuiper didn't give the score and only when they went to the ''break'' he said it's 2 to nothing giants...didn't even give the score after an exciting home run ...you thought it might be 1-0, but it was 2-0.they act like you are seeing what they're seeing as if distracted by so much tech and screens ,these announcers in this modern world don't really ''do radio'' like they are supposed to. lot of people listen on ear buds in public places so you have to announce like you want to keep people's attention on the game. yeah ,even fleming seemed to be impatient with millers long rambling commentary that would take entirely too much attention to keep up with.

  9. That would be so cool if KFRC would reinvent itself into good local talk radio. Bring back the best of the old KGO without Ronnnnn of course), add some sports talk, local finance talk, health talk, maybe relationship talk. Just mix it up a bit, limit the syndicated crap and I think it would go over well.

    1. But CBS owns 106.9fm KFRC! They will not sell the FM simulcast of 740am

      Delete
    2. Was Rich referring to the 106.9 KFRC or the old 610 KFRC? I can't imagine why CBS would consider selling 106.9 FM as a standalone. Now, I could see Family Radio selling 610 AM as a standalone. BTW, isn't Gabbert pushing 80? I don't know if at that age he has the desire to get back into the biz full-time. Just sayin.

  10. Jon Miller is irritating on many levels - I do not see what people see in him. He is overly in love with himself and is not funny, especially when he tries to speak Spanish whenever Angel Pagan hits one out of the park.

  11. I have heard that when Miller took the job in San Francisco, he insisted on being referred to as the "Voice of the Giants." The little credibility I gave Krueger was lost after that idiotic Scully/Flemming remark.

  12. How does J Miller have any time to give a score or tell a wonderful story (he definitely used to) when he's commanded to read a commercial spot for bourbon, Japanese cars, car insurance, pizza, airlines, accounting firms, lawyers, or charities? The radio broadcasts are borderline unlistenable due to interruptions every 1.5 minutes with a paid spot. Yes, I'm aware that baseball has always had in-game commercials but definitely not to this degree.

    1. Absolutely true. The in game jabbering for this such and such thing sponsored and brought to you by blah blah, take you pick, it's horrible and interrupts any flow.

  13. Jon Miller is overrated. He's not that good. Ken Korach and Vince Cotroneo in Oakland. Now that's a solid team. Solid no-nonsense announcers. Miller lives off of Vin Scully impressions and his cute use of Spanish. Knock it off, fat man. Go have another carnitas burrito with extra sour cream and cheese.

Larry Kruger is busy kissing ass, isn't he. But one thing's for sure, Flemming is better on the ears than Miller.

And Melissa Culross has the face of a jet engine. No wonder she's got influence at that station. How would you like to be on the other end of one of her rants? But what can she do about getting that self-serving egotist Jan Wahl off the air?

    ReplyDelete

    1. ONLY Jack Swanson has influence at that radio station...Why do you think so many KGO'ers are there. All of them better than the CBS people...And the CBS Vets know that. Let's see how much influence Melissa has when the sell the company.

  14. Is it me or are Kruk and Kuip sounding old and tired these days? I remember in their heyday when the Giants were winning they sounded fresh and bright and witty esp. Kuip. Now they sound old tired and boring. I wish King Larry Baer would give them permission to stop their homerism and allow them to speak honestly about the G-men..Everyone would benefit as they are smart about the Giants but not allowed to show it. They have those beautiful expensive rings so they do what King Larry says.

    1. Baer allowing Kruk and Kuip to stop homerism? Never happen and both suck for that reason IMO...funny, first time all season I've heard an announcer rip a Giants player was the other night when Greg Papa (filling in I guess) criticized Hunter Strickland for not covering first base. Papa didn't get the memo apparently.

  16. If you listen to Giants baseball you hear the score plenty of times. If you just tune in for 30 seconds then why are you bitching? You obviously don't care enough about the game to listen for more than a minute or so.

    1. I don't think that's fair and pretty snobbish. There are lots of times I'm doing other things besides watching or listening to all 162 games for all nine innings. Sometimes I'm doing other stuff and just want to hear who's winning or losing and whether I want to listen to more. I listen to KNBR a lot and Giants fans, and I'm one, take shit a little too seriously. Where were all of you before the new ballpark and three World Series. You weren't at Candlestick, because I was there many a day and night growing up on the Peninsula. Lots of games with only hundreds in attendance. You could walk up on a Friday night.

  17. Good idea on taking over the old 610 KFRC although CBS owns the famous call letters now assigned to 106.9. Gabbert may be able to swing it for the current KGO. Cumulus has shown its complete inability to succeed and should give it up. I like 3:39 PM's idea but I'm over 60 and don't know if that is a winner for the millennials.

    1. 3:39pm here. I'm 54, about Rich's age, and not sure what kind of talk radio would appeal to millennials for a new 610. Do they even listen to talk radio? Corey and Joel are that prime age but bad radio. Maybe some tech talk in there. I don't know but sure miss the old KGO lineup. Even the Loya Len Tilem and blow hard Dr. Bill on weekends.

  19. Ironically, Jon Miller(in his days with Orioles)used to emulate Red Barber in using the egg timer as a reminder to give the scores(learned that info in a 1987 profile of Miller in 'Sports illustrated', possibly the first I ever heard of him).
He still had good attention to detail his early years with the Giants, but has gotten sloppy in the last decade or so.
