KGO Radio's Titanic from 5-9 AM; The Armstrong and Getty Ship is Sinking But Branson is Happy

A total disaster. Numbers are historically low. No buzz. No beat. No traction whatsoever, but are we surprised here? Nope.

The only winner: Branson, Missouri.

Another brilliant decision by the clouds, they're good at that.

  1. Stan here had a change in his schedule. So, now on the road when those clowns are on. They proclaimed that "The Cold War was Fun!"
I tell ya..I'm down to KCBS in the morning.I might now have to find NPR. But they were always high in snooze factor and that hushed voice affect correctly lampooned by SNL's "Shwetty Balls"..ugh.

  2. The new morning sports show on 1050 was a welcome alternative to KNBR. Found it by accident, sometime after 6:30 KNBR started playing one of those godawful song parodies, immediately coercing me to change the dial. Kept it there the rest of the commute.

  5. I remember when I moved to Sacramento 6 years ago hearing how great Armstrong and Getty were. I gave it a fair shot one week. My honest assessment was the were Milktoast at best. How they gotten regional syndication is beyond me. Radio shows in market #151 sounds better!

  6. Radio in the Bay Area really sucks. Armstrong and Getty is the only show I can stay with through a commercial break. It's interesting to note that they were replaced with Stephanie Miller on 910 and ratings fell by 50% and now I hear Spanish when I hit that spot on the dial

  7. Branson just called. They want their old show back.

  8. Amstrong and Getty are two more people on the radio who puzzle me. How did they get/keep a show and get it syndicated? They are not funny, not smart, not clever, somewhat childish, and it's painful trying to listen to them.

I'm going to answer the "why" question for all, at least from my perspective.

I met with A&G 3-4 years ago when looking for a producer. I knew the moment I walked into the conference room it wasn't going to work out because in truth, I was me and they were them. In other words, they wanted someone who would help them push their complete bullshit radio program, and that wasn't going to be me.

See, the thing about A&G which works for them and even more than them, the executives responsible for them, is they are truly very conservative guys who are pretending to be middle of the road. Which is exactly like the corporate pricks who manage these stations. The corporate pricks want America to think they're "moderate", and A&G speaks THAT language specifically. It's completely a fake belief, which is why it's a fake show.

At their core, A&G are conservative "every man" guys, if you think every man is a pro-gun, anti-tax, anti-union, jackass who wears a tweed sport coat and jeans.

They do the bidding of corporate. They are the "yes men", and that's why they exist.

Corporate hopes they can maintain a conservative audience and appeal to major regional/national advertisers which the Rush/Hannity/Levin/Savage crowd has lost. Corporate believes it's out there and willing to spend, so they've crafted their program around that very thing. Unfortunately, it's so fake and filled with utter bullshit that it just doesn't work.

No one likes fake except for the lowest common denominator, and that's who they appeal to within the conservative sect.

On some level, Rich is spot on by referring to them as "Branson", in that they're so Midwest, but in truth the people of Branson would never go for such fake nonsense. "Show Me" state, and they wouldn't want to be shown bullshit.

Te whole "Voice of the West" is a blatant attempt to capture an audience all the way out to Salt Lake. It's a nice marketing ploy, and if they were better it might work. These guys are attempting to create a big sound, but it's lame. They don't take calls because they're not smart enough to take the challenge of any caller who could call them on their nonsense, but more to the point, it would upset the mood of the fake laughter dynamic they've created.

The show pretends to be light, but that's the point.

It's near-scripted nonsensical, intellectually lightweight, borderline news show that sneakily leans right, but lacks truly intelligent entertaining hosts.

Basically it's what the USFL was to football, for the most part.

  10. it is stupid to have syndicated morning drive radio, unless its howard stern. nobody wants to listen to two yokels in the morning in san francisco. i heard one of their commercials talking about what you will hear on their show and why you should tune in...and it was as much of a mess as their show
    what a joke

  11. These two have very irritating voices, are not amusing and say nothing of interest.

Then there is Pat Thurston. Or should i give her a degrading nickname as she so often likes to give people she doesn't happen to like? Today ahe heard a story abput an elderly woman that was drugging and stealing from men she would meet. At first Pat thought the woman was killing them and she thought that was "a riot."

And then there is drex. Or was drex. Can't stand him but wish hom no ill. He has been out a long time.

  12. Haven't wasted the time to listen to Armstrong and Getty or any of the other dreck that Cumulus has put on KGO. That station was struggling in 2012, but Cumulus has taken KGO radio, and in four short years, ruined a legacy station. I fervently hope that Cumulus goes bankrupt soon. They lucked out with KNBR, but even with 'the Sports Leader,' they've made some major missteps, as Hammer, the tool, has brought in non-entities such as Kate Scott, John Lund, and 'Paulie' McCaffrey. Plus they hang on for some reason to Fitz and Brooks, one of the worst sports shows on the radio. Fitz is insincere and a phony, and Brooks is a know-it-all loudmouth. But even they are better than the trio previously mentioned. Cumulus is a despicable, horrible, bloodless company, and they deserve every bad thing that might come there way. They are everything that is wrong with today's radio.

  13. I hated their show! It was painful to listen to! Tried a couple of times and didn't last more than 5 minutes before I had to change stations!

  14. There must be a back story why Rich hates A&G. I am not sure what it is? I was born and raised in the Bay Area and I enjoy the show. Good interviews and amusing banter. Been listening for years. Honestly, sometimes they grate on me, but all I all I enjoy listening to them. The condescending remarks from others who don't like the show are so annoying. Really, you are not smarter or more enlightened than I am. I do not agree with many opionions on the left, but that's okay. Living here, I am an anomaly. I don't mind and to each his own. The problem with the left though, they think anyone with a different opinion is just stupid and that really just shows your own ignorance.

    1. Exactly, in this large, progressive metro area you ARE an anomaly. A& G don't serve the masses of our Metro area. They are an anomaly in this market, thus the anger at the notion of their presence on the air here.

    2. The problem as I see it, A&G aren't very smart. The lack critical thinking skills.

    3. I dont believe he is an anomaly at all. What 12:05 fails to or doesn't want to realize is that there is much more anger around here at what the Bay Area has become than there are people worried about a radio station that no one listens to anymore. When is the last time you spoke to a neighbor 12:05? How many neighbors on your street can you name? If that is your progressive utopia the future looks bleak to say the least.

    4. Say what 9:50? What has what I said have ANYTHING to do with knowing my neighbors? I guess you have a hard time kinda getting a clue. Re-read 11:29, sir, he used the anomaly phrase, I agreed.

  15. Armstrong and Getty sound like a couple of silly teenaged boys giggling in their parents' den, with their voices still in the changing stage.

  16. When I used to have the IHeart app I'd fall asleep listening to alien talk on coast to coast and then wake up listening to these two idiots in the morning. Their stupidity was way too jarring. Lesson learned. How these two idiots have a show is incomprehensible to me. Then again KSCO is still around. Same type of audience if you catch my drift...

  17. The only smart thing KGO has done lately is to put John Rothmann on at night. With everything that's going in this election, it's nice to hear intelligent political conversation on the radio.

  18. KGO is a vapid wasteland. Recently, they retooled and touted THE NEW GENERATION OF KGO, but nothing has changed. The hourly clock is still clogged with ENDLESS breaks for news, weather, and traffic and/or commercials. It completly destroys the flow of the talk. You get 6 or 7 minutes of a topic, THEN everything stops dead for Nikki Midoro or Kim Foster to bore us with 5 minutes of pointlessness. If KGO were smart, they'd COMPLETELY deep-six the news breaks, get rid of all the extra personelle (thereby reducing costs and needing to run fewer commercials), and let the hosts do their thing. If KGO did this, they MIGHT be able to draw in listeners. As it stands now, I cannot take the constant interruptions. They should throw Ronnald and that irritating noon guy off the air and replace Drecks with John Rothman permanently. Put the Chipster in Ronnald's slot, but take away his Rich Uncles scripts. Then -- THEN -- KGO might live to fight another day.

No person from "the new generation" will EVER listen to AM radio. No one. I learned that from Disney.

  20. Ethan Bearman sounds like a slightly less juvenile drex.

Amongst his other annoying habits, Chip Franklin does the same thing karel used to do; interrupt the news with his own aside about it or something that is barely related. Keep quiet while the reports are being read.

Nikki "I'm so special" Midoro; how did she keep her job during the last bloodbath?

  21. Hard to listen, KGO sounds like a conservative station, just don't listen to them. John Rothman is great for political commentary.
