Radnich Kills The Internet; Encounter with Catherine Heenan is All Shtick But Makes Radnich Look Like an Asshole; KRON Gets Bit in The Ass

The above video is all Shtick --but don't tell that to the Internet, which bit Gary Radnich and KRON in the ass even though it accomplished a boatload of publicity.

Funny, it took this to make Raddy look like a piece of shit and embarrass news anchor and KRON veteran, the classy Catherine Heenan, who is clearly flustered here but has been a part of this joke for the better part of thirty years.

Radnich's act is to lampoon people; he's sort of known for what I call the Don Rickles act; he does it on radio too and at times it can be very entertaining. But after awhile it becomes unfunny and repetitive --sort of like devouring a great steak with all the trimmings but too much steak, even a Porterhouse at Morton's makes the stomach nauseous.

Radnich finally got his comeuppance --I'm sure KRON is embarrassed but remember its publicity and for that, I don't see the GM or ND getting all that ticked off,  at least for now, but Radnich will probably can the Don Rickles act for a few days. Or until he's bored.

The new guy is probably giggling. Just a hunch.

  1. I can't view the video on this site at work, but it made national on mediaite, normally a political media site. Radnich looks petty over a totally unsubstantial story (Lebron in Space Jam, gimme a break). I actually think this is less a sports story, even though it involves Lebron, and is more a general entertainment story and should rightly be reported by the anchor. A sports reporter getting pissy and referring to an irrigation ditch story in Gilroy demeans Heenan's job. I'm a huge sports fan, but even I know sports is a diversion. Let's put this in perspective, an overflowing irrigation ditch story actually has some impact to people in Gilroy. The Giants losing or Lebron in Space Jam has no impact other than to overzealous Giants fans or Lebron/Space Jam fans. His tweets about him joking makes him look even more embarrassing. I use to tune into KRON for his Sunday interview show, but that was before ESPN. Send Gary packing - he's a pompous, embarrassing anachronism.

  2. I don't think it's shtick it was totally uncomfortable to watch. Not funny, unprofessional and should have never happened. You know you did a bad thing when Jim Rome mentioned it in his open and will rip him to shreds later in the show. Not a good look KRON

  3. Living in Houston, TX, I've never seen Radnich before. Now I have. This is what passes for a sports report on your local TV station? I found it disgusting, at best, and I shut it off after 55 seconds.

    1. Fifty five seconds, you lasted a lot longer than most people. Your giving him a complement if you lasted 55 seconds!

    2. Who isn't recognizing that it's sarcasm? That's the whole point. It IS sarcasm, it's all that comes out of that bloated asshole's mouth and we're sick of it. I'm starting to think he's going to bring down the station more than the schlocky reporting and terrible VJs (a few of which have actually gotten pretty good over the years).

  5. And some people can recognize when it isn't sarcasm. Sarcasm would've been one little offhand mention, like "Oh, that would've been a nice sports mention." But to demean your fellow newscaster's role, say she spent time with your mom, wrote her notes and you've been friends for 20+ years - that's taking it personally and goes beyond sarcasm. Unless you have a different definition of sarcasm than the rest of us.

  6. When I saw the video last week I came away thinking, "Damn, how sexy does Catherine look in those videos when flustered?". I'm used to seeing her serious all the time on the news but when flustered the look on her face was sexy as hell.

    1. She is a terrible cutie who is a little stuff on scripted TV and should let go more. About eight years ago, when Phil Matier was at KRON, they did a Sunday evening show after the newscast where they sat around and talked politics with guests, and one saw a whole different side to Catherine when she ad-libbed and loosened up. She is truly one of the best in the business--that more outlets don't realize this is a shame.

  7. I couldn't even watch that whole cringeworthy encounter between the always-professional, always personable Catherine Heenan and the mega-azz Radnich. Were I the ND or the GM, I'd suspend his ass for that and then, when it came time to renew his contract, I'd show him how the door opens and closes...from the outside.

  8. It does not get any less professional than that, the next stop for that slob should be Salinas. How can a major market station tolerate that kind of behavior, he can't be that popular.

    1. He is that popular. That's why he still on the air.

    2. If he is "that popular" why do you need an electron microscope to see KRON's ratings?

    3. He is sufficiently popular to draw a large salary from a company that isn't philanthropic. Why else would he still be employed?

  9. Between this and the "dress thing" last week - a dark part of my soul figures that news directors across the country will be trying to work exchanges like these into their newscasts to make them go viral and get viewers hooked with an "anything can happen on live TV" template.

  12. If you've watched (even before KRON sucked beyond comprehension) or listened, it's a running gag... the "Stealing my material". BUT he did go too far with the personal business. Might want to stick to the ," 3 to 2, 2 to 1" for a bit Gare.

  13. It's interesting to see the Internet response. Awful Announcing, a sports site and JIm Rome, went off on Radnich. If you go to the clip on YouTube, you see Radnich's defenders. Everywhere else they're condemning his act. I love that he tells another newscaster to stay in her lane when he derails the news with his quips and ad hoc comments. Side note: I think it was a bad move for the producer to take the blame for this. Radnich doesn't have the humility to just apologize and shut up.

  14. A poster at Awful Announcing said it best by calling Gary Radnich a wedge.
Radnich still thinks he is funny. He doesn't understand his time has passed.

  16. Shtick or not, it just went too far. When you joke around, there's a smile. When you tease someone that you have a good working relationship with, it's obvious.

In this case, that smile gave way to a serious tone. He may have been joking in the beginning, but there was definitely some hurt feelings when he turned serious. It’s quite obvious he can’t read the room. And, frankly, it was cringe worthy to watch.

This incident is just one blip in a long line of questionable behavior by Radnich. Would you ever see Shu "joke around" with Ashley like this? Would you ever see Ibanez chide Somerville in this way?

Radnich brought an alternative voice to the Bay Area media landscape decades ago. But times have changed and the audience just isn’t looking for that any more. And he made himself look like a fool, distracting the good work that many others at KRON put in on a daily basis.

It's time for KRON to cut this guy loose.

  17. Rich is right. This is their schtick. It's still sweeps month, someone gave them an extra minute to chit chat. They know each other well enough to anticipate the next barb. Gary was even being extra mild. Would it play anywhere else? Does it play here? Those are the real questions. This is just business as usual, and funny that there has been reaction. Catherine is fabulous, as always.
