It's Official: Frank Mallicoat Coming to KTVU

It's NOW official --the ousted KPIX morning news anchor is coming to KTVU, the deal went down --Mallicoat will anchor and report, no specific time of the day although expect Mallicoat to have a lot of prime air real estate.

KTVU has a massive credibility gap with all the newbie reporters and anchors and a guy like Mallicoat--who is well-liked by both viewers and staff alike, should help KTVU right off the bat--which presumably why he was hired.

  1. Congrats to Frank for rebounding so quick. Frank seems like a truly nice and sincere person, especially, one who is working in that cut-throat industry. Good going, Frank. He who laughs last, laughs best as they say at the anchor desk.

  2. Probably the only smart decision made by KTVU in years.

  3. Oh well...at least Keba can hope for the "Facts Of Life" Reunion Special to guest-star in. Hi, Mrs Garrett!!

  4. If he was a flop at PIX, what makes you think this tour will be successful?

    2. He ain't there, is he? They don't get rid of successful heads.

    3. The real flop is that drip Griego. I can't imagine that they would keep that dullard much longer.

    4. He's older, white, and (presumably) made decent money. Look around, thats enough right there to lose your job in the present market.

    5. Can they take the hefty traffic whale with Griego?

  5. KPIX continues to spiral to last place. They have no good eye for talent or likability. Frank was the only one with a down to earth personality and local ties on their morning show and they canned him. Plenty of really good Bay Area talent was not picked up by 5 including John Sasaki, Erica Kato, and Alan Wang and all of them could have helped their likeability and relatability factor.

Management simply has no interest in improving their numbers or relationships with viewers.

    1. Spiral? They are there. I got a real education from a friend who does sales at one of the TV stations. What the real numbers from Nielsen say may surprise you, especially based on what I've seen on this blog.

While 2 and 7 take a lot of crap here for how they do things, they are running away in the morning from the competition in the key demographic of 25-54 year olds. 7 is starting to slide back. Channel 4's audience usually doesn't show up until 7 AM or later. Channel 5 usually only has an audience between 5:45-7 AM. It tends to be small. 11 is consistent but not really going up or down and usually comes in 3rd. But my buddy says no one is really watching any of the stations until about 5:30 AM. (Makes you wonder why they start at 4 or 4:30)

But the evening ratings are really something to see. The idea that no one watches channel 4 is false. Completely false. The 5 and 6 PM newscasts routinely come in 3rd and on occasion, 2nd or 1st. 2 and 7 tend to dominate this time of day with solid ratings that hold through the entire time period. But 4 usually beats 5 and 11. Yes, you read that right. 5 routinely comes in dead last with channel 11 placing 4th.

The late local news is still doing pretty good particularly for channel 2. Their numbers are not what they once were, but the 10PM is the most watched local TV newscast in the 25-54 demographic. The 11 PM belongs to channel 7 with 5 and 11 battling for 2nd place. 4 does have an audience, but it is small and they are in 4th.

    2. I also have access to the ratings and this is 100% true. What doesn't make sense to me is that KPIX makes no effort to improve. They have put-me-to-sleep Griego when I need someone to wake-me-up. They hired Kenny who is a reader and nothing more. The traffic woman is bland and frankly, they need a looker in that spot. Roberta is OK. Not my favorite but atleast she is awake (unlike everyone else).

8:29 was onto something. John or Alan would have been a better fit in the anchor chair, and Erica is really popular. John is a local boy, too from Berkeley.

    3. Wow, that's a lot of nuanced information to retain from a conversation with a "friend," or "buddy."

I'm in the biz and what you write is true. I'm just saying, well, which station's sales department are you in?

    4. KPIX would never hire minorities. The whiter the better there. Full Chinese is OK

  6. This is excellent... I'm sure Frank Mallicoat will help immensely to try and resurrect the sinking reputation of KTVU News.

  7. KTVU needs bodies. They are always doing news now. Something like 4-10 AM. 12pm-1pm. 4pm-8pm. And then the 10pm. I may be wrong, but that is a hell of a lot programming to crank out at the sausage factory.

    1. There is just way too much news, and they all report the same thing. Most of it just points out the social decay which is ripping apart the fabric which once held together a great country called America

The Golden State of California is long gone, a distant memory. We are now just an outpost for the Third World.

    2. Funny, they were saying that back in 1906 after the SF earthquake...

    3. I have to agree KTVU repeats a very few stories over and over. I'm surprised they don't play Gasia like an old answering machine tape over and over. Oh I forgot they already do...

Me thinks Frank might wind up as a replacement for Pam (who I honestly like) but Pam is gone way too much almost gone as much as she is on the air. Even with Pam's talent in a foxified news environment I wonder how she gets away with it? I do recall she quit and was coaxed back but that was Cox not Fox...

    4. In 1906 there were not many Hispanics in California. In 2016 they are now the majority of the population in California. In another 110 years, I wonder what the "Golden State" will look like!

    5. At 8:06pm....I'm always amazed at the amount of low level idiots that post stuff like this. Most likely you are from the northeast or Midwest. Pretty entertaining though.

    6. At 6:47...A native, been here 70 years. I have a "standard." I have the life experience to compare what California is now, compared to real "Golden State" I grew up in! You have no standard. You accept what you see as the "norm," or par for the course!

California's population has exploded. That explosion, more than 50% since 1980, lies at the root of virtually all of California's pressing public policy issues, including traffic congestion, land and water conflicts, air pollution, public school performance, health care access, college crowding and the State's chronic budget deficits.

Welcome to the "New California." The "Golden State" is long gone, a distant memory. I remember, you will never have those memories, you have no "standard."

You don't need a calculator to figure what is coming down the Pike, you see it everyday here in the Bay area, the results of over population. If you have a solution, let me know, you seem to be pretty smart.

  11. for the people that say there is way too much news... I would like to reply that there isn't way too much news.. just way to many attempts at broadcasting news programs that leave viewers wanting... how about some issue.. how about what is happening in Sacto that impacts me where I live and those throughout the state... traffic accidents.. weather.. fires.. all have their place.. just not as prominent as some ND's and EP's thing they are. Just saying...

    1. Issues and what is generally called "enterprise reporting" takes time and money. Traffic and weather just takes a desk jockey with a scanner or a meteorologist who's paid whether they do one or six updates so why not fill time with six? It's all about $$$.

    2. No way. He's the only major black male desk talent, and just about the only black talent, unless you think Keba has any.

Dave's not going anywhere unless Dennis Richmond decides he wants to come back to work.

  12. Maybe he needs to go on in the morning shift and knock those twittering young whippersnappers over at KGO off the air.

  13. Frank will be Foxified as a condition of employment...
    Just so ya'll know.

  14. You mean Dave "bug-eye" Clark. I just laugh when I see this guy - the black Ron Burgundy. Is that his real "speaking voice?" I hope not. He's about as natural as a highly-processed Jheri Curl from 1985.

  15. Just sent you $100. Would have sent it earlier but I have a Masters Degree in Procrastination. What prompted me? Your great articles about Mike Savage and Roberta Gonzales, two of the Bay area's finest.

That donation maxed out my credit card. I spent most of the day yesterday, trying to get them( the mean credit card people) to increase my limit, so I could send you some more money. My limit has been frozen at $100 for many years!

They refused to increase my limit because my credit score was too low. I have never checked my score because I already have enough problems in my life. They would never tell me my score, only that it was hovering around zero!

I am hearing impaired, difficult to communicate using my land line, please don't call, an email would be great. I love 415 Media, keep up the great work!!

All news, all the time, repeated stories -- sounds like KCBS, the most popular radio station.
