415 Media Flash! Frank Mallicoat OUT at KPIX

Veteran KPIX Morning News anchor, Frank Mallicoat, is OUT.

Several PIX sources have confirmed to me that Mallicoat was informed by CBS-SF suits that his contract won't be renewed --and that a new anchor from Hawaii, Kenny Choi, has already been hired. Choi anchored the 10 PM News at KITV. (ABC aff)

Mallicoat will stay on at PIX until Choi arrives next month.

KPIX's "Morning News" program has seen a steady ratings decline in the last few years despite the CBS Morning Show vastly improved ratings.

That apparently didn't translate over to PIX.

A source at 855 Battery said newsroom staff is "extremely sad" for Mallicoat.  "Really, a good guy, a real team player."

  1. Let's face it. Nobody likes watching Asian male anchors. They just don't bring the attention of the viewers. People want to see a strong white male as lead anchor. KPIX's rating are never going to go up after doing this stupid move. Fuck KPIX and their management!

      You know this....how?

    3. Yeah, nobody watches David Ono and Rob Fukuzaki at KABC-TV (DMA #2)....The Joseph Goebbels remark is perfectly suited for you--But I'm sure if flew over your head and your Jr.High education...And if your education is higher than that, then it's just a disgrace.

    4. Rob Fukuzak is a low-rate sports anchor. The only reason he got the position was because he got on his knees for management. I'll let you figure out what he did on his knees.

I know Kenny from his days in Hawaii, & the joke was I could walk up behind him & yell "KI-YA!!", & he'd jump into Kung Fu battle mode faster than a zip shit & a Fuck You Charlie! True Story!!!

    6. I reckon 929 also votes on the Academy Awards. What ignorance. What stupidity. Grab your copy of Mein Kampf, shut the door, close the blinds and go down in your cave and beat it. After all, Mein Kampf was written by someone who didn't go past primary school. About your speed.

    7. 100% in agreement 9:29. Don't let the racist yelling Dem sheep tell you otherwise. That's all they know how to do when faced with uncomfortable reality.

    8. I watch the noon news everyday and the evening news, I really liked Frank Mallicoat a day Lawrence Karknow. CBS what are you doing? Do you want your ratings to go down even more? You should get rid of Hackney, Gonzales and bring back the good news anchors! So disappointed in what you are doing!

  2. Hackney was co-anchoring this morning, but I don't like this at all. KPIX was easily my favorite morning newscast. Mallicoat reminded me a lot of John Kessler. Professional, yet could improvise and was kinda the point guard of the newscast - doing the news, and directing traffic and weather. Didn't seem to have an ego and could deal with the potential divas in Griego and Gonzales. Bad move from where I sit.

    1. Where's Roberta? I would imagine she is in the top position on the seniority list in the Bay Area. She has outlasted everyone. The real "survivor" is Roberta.

    2. I would argue that the NY suits would be better served by leaving Mr. Mallicoat in place and instead replacing Roberta, who's breathless, over-the-top performance through each of the too numerous weather hits forces me to grab for the remote every time.

    3. You forgot to mention her arm and hand flourishes that make her look like she's doing a hula dance in front of the weather map.

  4. It's becoming politically correct to get rid of white anchors in favor of minorities. I'll miss Frank. He is a real pro!

    2. Stinks of PC. Go to Cleveland or Columbus, Frank. They are great places to live and would love to have you. Buy a coat and some boots.

      Delete
    3. Don't listen to rootvg Frank. Cleveland is a shithole with nothing left. Why would a person downgrade their living conditions. Frank can get another TV job in California if he wants to.

      Delete
    4. Cleveland is great if you have dough, your friends have dough and you can insulate yourself from the demographic pit that region has become. He would no doubt be able to do that. Another ten years here and my wife and I will be able to do precisely the same thing.

Columbus is another matter, having become somewhat expensive by midwestern standards but nevertheless a very nice town. (Increasingly a very big town with traffic most cities in that part of the country do not have.)

  6. I think this new anchor falls in line with what the other local networks are doing. KGO did it Aqui and Zouves and Garcia-Cannon's co-anchor is fairly young too, in comparison other anchors throughout the day. I would guess or hope there are viewer studies and focus groups that bear out this trend and it's not just a reflex move to get younger millennials to tune in - because they won't. That's not the way they acquire and digest most of their information.

  7. So sad to get rid of a "class act." He is a Bay area guy that brings passion and professionalism to a tough business. Mr. Mallicoat brings positive energy every early morning. His coanchor lacks any energy at all... and Roberta loves herself more than life. She does have several lives she keeps on coming back. SAD... They are getting rid of the wrong anchor and they should look at other ways to be a top rated show.
Bye Bye KPIX you will lose several followers. Hello KGO!

    1. Totally agree. Frank has charisma, class and a genuine marketability the station failed to capitalize on. Michelle and the rest of the crew should have been canned. She is in desperate need of hibernation and Roberta needs valium. But station politics is king, so...........

  9. KPIX's ratings problem for their morning newscast could be solved overnight by one simple - but inspired - hire: Christina Loren. They could instantly capture 90-plus-percent of the male demographic. As an aside, I like Frank Mallicoat's style and manner as a newscaster. I was very disappointed to read this story.

  10. When John Kessler left, I stopped watching KPIX in the mornings. Maybe Frank is a nice guy, but I found him rather bumbling. I like KPIX news on Sunday morning, but sadly that quality programming will never happen on the weekdays.

    1. If you stopped watching after john Kessler left, how did you know Frank was bumbling??

    2. Maybe Frank can fill in Sports at KGO, since there is an opening

  11. So, rather than shift Ann Mackovic to the weekdays from the weekends, they bring in a 12 year old to anchor? Makes no sense to me...

    1. Makes perfect sense--It's all about the $$$s. Station are hiring younger folks for beyond the "youthful look"--It's a cheaper hire! TV stations are taking a beating w/declining ad revenues (Although there's retrans $), so it's all about the bottom line now.

  12. Talking about new hires, Brittney Shipp!! Whoever at KRON who hired her, deserves a 2 week, all expenses paid vacation anywhere in the World! Now everyone knows what "displayed properly," looks like.

  14. Awww, I liked Frank, he will be missed. Why doesn't KPIX get rid of Dennis O'Donnell, he's been on PIX way too long!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love Britteny! Sorry to say after the super bawl I could no longer bring myself to even watch any KPIX newscast. I'd like to see Roberta teamed with Liam reviewing fast food eateries in Modesto (she gets on my nerves and always has).

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love this! Talk about poetic justice! Frank was brought in to replace John Kessler in order to enhance the ratings. The thing is, KPIX was already number one in the mornings at the time, but still, the head honchos at KPIX were not satisfied. Since Frank was brought in, they have never been able to beat KGO, which is where most people migrated to upon the unceremonious firing of John Kessler and Sydnie Kohara. So Frank, how does it feel to have done to you, what you basically did to John Kessler?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I doubt if Mallicoat even knew Kessler since Mallicoat had been back east for 15 years. I think being replaced is a fact of life in broadcasting - it is in lots of job that have various life cycles - pro sports coaches, ad agencies, pr agencies, etc.

  18. He is the token Asian newscaster so Asians can't file a discrimination lawsuit against KPIX stating there are no Asian male newscasters on the channel.
The White guy loses his job to make the Asians happy.
This is what it is really about.
Behind the scenes the Asians were probably threatening Channel 5 with a lawsuit if a token Asian guy wasn't hired.
It doesn't matter though, no one is going to watch a Asian guy read the news when you can't understand him, so they will have no ratings.
    Next story.....

  20. I'm not sure what most of you are watching but I detest any local TV news station except local PBS. Most news anchors are terrible. KPIX, KRON, KTVU all are more about non-stories. Regardless of race, the new story isn't the same. I'd prefer to find accurate reporting and not flashy newscaster. Sorry everyone, it's NOT about race. And I'm tired of this dialogue. Be human people not complainers.

  21. Disappointed in KPIXApril 11, 2016 at 2:47 PM

What are you thinking KPIX? This is nothing but reverse racism. Frank was great. Time to watch another channel.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I did not watch KPIX 4/11/16. I was totally through when they let Frank go. He was a professional who added a touch of class to what was a lackluster news station at best. Right now I'm channel surfing for something better. They lost me and my husband. We like Charlie Rose who comes on at 7:00 but we will NEVER watch KPIX again for the stupid move on their parts. Idiots! We will miss Frank.

  23. What a huge disappointment to find out Frank Mallicoat has gotten the boot.So long KPIX. Mr Choi just doesn't have the same charisma !!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Frank should not have been released. Michelle and especially Roberta(part roach) should be replaced. Roberta is self serving terrible weather person. I am tired of listening about adventures!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Frank was the best part of the morning show. It's a shame they would let him go.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm going to miss Frank as I thought he was the class act of this program. I agree with an earlier writer that Roberta's weather report is a joke and I go to another channel to get the weather. I recall when they got rid of the prior weather person and he was good. CBS is not thinking of the customer - we, who watch the program, might have some input into what is a good presentation.
Very sad what has happened to this news group and if I were an employee, I'd get out of there fast before they decided to fire me.

  27. The first comment at the top is a racist we need more ethnicity in tv news.Who cares what races they are anything to brighten up the news cast like on another tv station I like to watch the station got rid of an anchor I like and I was surprised he was working at a neighbor tv station. We will see then again soon!.

  28. I like Frank Mallicoat a lot. He's one the reason I watched this station every morning. They just broke up a great team. Very very bad move management... so now your ratings are down a little more but I won't be watching anymore

  29. Frank will be missed...he is a outstanding news anchor men, great personality perfect fit... I can go on and on and on... I just can't figure out what management was thinking about... Their loss
