The 415 Media Morning Report; KCBS New Intros; White Men At KGO-TV Draws Response; Emily Turner At KRON Up And Comer; Plus More; Happy Tuesday

KCBS has a new intro and outro: "106.9 and AM 740" --pretty sooner rather than later, you'll be hearing more splashy, tabloid-like headlines too --GM Jack Swanson wants a more old KGO-like, breezier, entertainment element to the KCBS model. The old KCBS "news" standard will remain just conforming to the times.

--Yes, Erica Kato is doing part-time traffic on KCBS but is looking for a TV gig...as is Christina Loren.

--Those three male, white guys on KGO-TV News Saturday night: Matt Keller, Mike Shumann, and Drew Tuma prompted a line from a KGO staffer: "I didn't know we (ABC7) looked like the Republican Convention."

--Stupid me, I thought Melanie Woodrow was a complete lightweight, but I was wrong: She's pretty darn good.

--Dear Keba Arnold: Sorry to put you in the blasé category after just a couple of months but truth be told, try to do something about the voice. The perpetual whimper is annoying as all get go.

--Emily Turner is a new reporter at KRON and if she continues to light up the screen she'll be headed to another station soon.

--The multitude of problems at KPIX doesn't involve merely anchors--most of the reporters are awful too. And dull.

--Yes, the Tuesday print edition of the SF Chronicle is thinner than Karen Carpenter's corpse.

--PIX factoid: One black woman reporter. No black anchors.

--MIA: Don Knapp. Which is a shame because he's still good.

--KCBS: There's a woman reporter who's supposedly stirring up quite a bit of shit (she anchors too) --don't try to cross her either or you pay the price, supposedly.

--Oh, notice that Katie Marzullo was absent Saturday night? She wasn't sick.

--Dave Clark: Your ad libs with the high priestess, Gasia are about as satisfying as a one-legged hooker.

--Who's the genius at KRON who thinks the Stanley Roberts' threats are worthy of a promo? Moron.

--Mario Sevilla: Radnich's bitch.

--Condolences to the friends and family of "Mayor" Art Finley, late of the old KGO Radio, KCBS and KRON, who passed away last week.

  1. The nice thing about one legged hookers is you get a decent discount...and they don't run off early...you get the whole hour.

Funny, if the lineup consisted of three "people of color" and the staffer said, "I didn't know we looked like the NAACP" everyone would be aghast, that person would be fired immediately and would henceforth be unemployable, and the station would immediately institute sensitivity training at the command of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

    1. Amen, 10:04! That or the "3 Jews & a Hooker" line would demand action from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

    2. I'd rather it resemble the RNC than the DNC for that would require 3 people of questionable legal status brought here solely to keep stuffing the ballot box in favor of the DNC all the while taking jobs and handouts from real citizens.

    3. I had to post a simliar response as 10:04 before I read any of the comments even though I figured (hoped) someone had already questioned that sort of statement and the double standards involved.

  6. That jessica aguirre post made me chuckle. No one watches channel 11

I heard erica recently on kcbs and was impressed. She knows her traffic

Keba comes across as "country". Very simpleton

Gasia is the best thing to happen to mo2

Channel 5. No blacks. All filipinos.

    1. KPIX has that one token black guy, Vern Glenn.

    2. I caught Erica, also. Radio could certainly be a backup for her. Besides, we need good looking people like her around the industry. Most of us are really ugly.

  7. Joe Fonzi did not sign off the 10 o'clock news last night on KTVU. He threw it back to Ken & Julie for the wrap up. Are the suits listening to criticism or what?

  8. I worked at 'PIX in '80's-90's. There weren't a lot of bruthas then, too. I recall there was Art-something (forgot his last name; he quit to become a Pastor/Minister)...and then the black gay guy (Lance Evans). They had a black Videotape Editor (Eddie).

That's pretty much it as far as black dudes in the entire newsroom.

    1. Art Something-Whatshisname, Black Gay Guy Lance Evans, and Videotape Editor Eddie. Who needs formality?!

    2. Before your tenure at KPIX, we had the oreo cookie on the weekends. I was the creme filling twixt two enormously talented guys. Andrew Hill and Jan Hutchins were both black.

  9. I would be willing to invest money in a new television channel that features 24-hours of continual Christina Loren forecasts.

  10. I worked for CBS in Detroit a few years ago. They are very formulaic when it comes to their all news stations. And they certainly won't to anything radical with a station that is #1 or #2 in the market. Bottom line is new bumpers do not signify a major shift away from the CBS all news formula. It's just window dressing.

  11. How is

a line from a KGO staffer: "I didn't know we (ABC7) looked like the Republican Convention."

not stereotyping, "profiling", or just plain bigoted in several ways?

It's a sincere query from a robot who is also not so happy about all the robophobia...

  12. Anonymous 1059am--That black guy Art was Art Cribbs who worked in the 1990's for both ABC7 & KPIX as a GA Reporter. The black gay guy, Lance Evans was a real flamboyant diva who had ongoing personnel issues with KPIX--don't know what he is doing now. The last KPIX Male Black GA Reporter was Robert Lyles, who as Rich reported, was escorted out by security several years ago who now works in public affairs for MUNI-just saw him last month being interviewed by KRON regarding MUNI closing the SF Metro underground starting at 9:30pm for the next 6 months for track repairs.

  13. Were blacks being denied or refused access to jobs at KPIX, or were there no blacks applying for employment?

  14. If Erica Kato was fired because the station had decided "to go in a different direction" (I think that was what I read on this site several months back), is that considered wrongful termination?

    1. I don't think so. You hear that expression so often that it's probably some kind of stock phrase concocted by attorneys to use to cover their asses in order to prevent such an accusation.

  15. Speaking of Kron, Anny Hong has been anchoring the past week or so in the morning replacing Darya temporarily. How about they remove Darya permanently and have Anny do this full time.

  16. @ 6:37 AM: THANK YOU! I was thinking/hoping the same thing! This morning is an all-time low, KRON...Darya in the usual skin-tight clubbing dress, but it has 'whore-izontal' slits so the "girls" line is clearly visable. If KRON had a female ND take over, things would surely change.

If Darya is a switch hitter it could change for the better!

  17. @6:37 & 9:30
    Spot-on!
Anny was sharp, professional and had great chemistry with the a.m. crew. For the week that she and Mark were at the helm, KRON a.m. was a newscast to be taken seriously. Now that Anny is no longer in the anchor's seat, KRON a.m. has regressed.

  18. In it's hey-day, KGO in the 1970's had a great lineup: Owen Spann, Jim Eason, Ronn Owens, Art Finley, and Bob Trebor.
