KTVU Internal Report Says Early Trouble for New 4PM Newscast; CNN Formally After PIX's Ayers; Jack Kulp Was Royally Screwed; Radnich Only Bay Area Sports Media Guy Not To Acknowledge Damon Bruce Father's Death; Thursday Start

 THURSDAY OPENER QUICK HITS

KTVU's internal ratings watchers were able to monitor the early results from the new 4PM Newscast debuting a little over a month ago involving Mike Mibach and Keba Arnold. The numbers were not related to any Sweeps nor official industry sheet. Strictly in-house review and they were not good, but mainly preliminary. In any event, they were important enough for KTVU that they were leaked out to people like me to obtain. So far, and this is real early, the few viewers watching at 4 are not impressed.

I've watched a few 4 PM shows and there's nothing that absorbs you; a very antiseptic, benign newscast that is long on generic content and short on anything substantive. Part of that is Arnold, who shouldn't be judged this early but while she's capable, she comes off as light-weight and simpleton-like.

Mibach also seems out of place and early on, not capable of being a strong co-anchor to carry Arnold. It takes time to create chemistry and develop a show's mojo but so far, there's not a lot of ebb and flow. Furthermore, when there's early trouble the idea of fixing loose ends at the Death Valley time slot of 4 PM doesn't help matters.

KGO-TV, which has its own 4 PM cast, doesn't seem to be worried by KTVU now or in the immediate future. We should know better in the fall.

*George Rask has been missing a lot lately (minor hand injury, thanks readers) in the morning at KRON. The veteran traffic anchor is very knowledgeable and has a very loyal following; unfortunately for Rask, boobs rule the day; they always will.

*If only you all knew that Gary Radnich hated, detested tweeting until KRON management told him he better tweet or else...the guy that continually made fun of social media and Twitter itself now can't stop tweeting. Next thing you know Radnich will start parking outside of handicapped zones.

*Oh, that Gladys.

*Now, KPIX has begun their version of "Happy Talk." The anchors are chirping more and more only some of them don't know how to ad-lib chirp if their life depended on it.

*If KGO Radio tanks to below a 1 share in the 6+ Overalls next month they you'll see what hell is like come the middle of next month. Then again, they'll be hell to pay no matter what happens so there really is no light at the end of the tunnel.

*That loudmouth political reporter, Mark Matthews, from KNTV: he's the type of guy that would do well on Wheel of Fortune but really suck on Jeopardy.

*Underrated: Noelle Walker

*Overrated: Cheryl Jennings

*Underrated: Allie Rasmus

*Overrated: Jana Katsuyama

*CNN is prepared to offer KPIX GA reporter, Christin Ayers, $400K to become its West Coast correspondent. Atlanta officials are meeting this week to formally offer its package to her, just crossing the T's and dotting the i's.

*Veronica De La Cruz and Liz Cook: fire and ice.

*Don Bleu: he was great...about 30 years ago.

*Jack Kulp was royally screwed you should know only Ben Fong-Torres couldn't say it like that because Ben works for Hearst-owned Chronicle.

*By the way, Gladys said I was great.

*"I'MMMMMMMMM KRIS-TIN HAAAAAAAANES, KGO 810."

*About everyone in the sports media industry sent a condolences shout-out to The Game's 95.7 FM talker, Damon Bruce, who lost his father last week. Well, one guy didn't acknowledge at all. Guess who? Yeah, Gary Radnich.

  1. My ears have stopped bleeding. Could it be that The Screaming Lady of TrueCar ads has moved on? Dare I hope? It's been over three days and I haven't needed to run to the volume controller even one time. Dare I hope?

    1. I hear ya. When that annoying blasting voice comes on, I quickly change the station. I've noticed that commercial is played on the iHeart stations. So I make sure I flip to a CBS station, where that commercial will not be played.

  2. Typical that Tardnich wouldn't send condolences to a co-worker...the only time the tard would even acknowledge a co-worker would be if they owed him $ or if Tardnich said "where's my lunch, Goddamit??" Fat Fuck.

    1. I love how Fatnich/Tardnich/Turdnich/Dicknich is getting shit on in this blog. He gets what he deserves. Take your snobby Bentley and get the f*** out.

    2. Tardnich went to the Matt Gonzalez School of How to Wash Your Ass & was sent back repeatedly...dirty little shit-ass bastard.

  3. Rich with all the important national & local news events this summer (the tragic murder of Kate Steinle, the Chattanooga murders, the killing of the Hayward police sergeant, Donald Trump Presidential Run etc., I've been listening to Morning News Talk Radio(specifically Ron Owens) a whole lot more than Sports Talk Radio. Who the hell is this annoying idiotic "Rama" caller dude that gets his own pre- introduction by Owens before he spoutson air? Is "Rama" a regular KGO Radio paid caller?--he makes "Stan the Observer" seem reasonable by comparison. Keep up the great work Rich!

    1. Leave Rama alone. He is simply a devoted KGO listener. He calls into all or most of their talk shows. He seems to be a nice man who also has some health problems, which I've heard referred to during Maureen Langan's show. All the hosts and screeners know him and he makes for a good caller. I don't think he's annoying or idiotic at all. Maybe you just resent the attention he gets.

    2. Whew! Must be slim pickings in the caller department.

By the way, can we have a more interesting test to make sure we're not a robot? If you can pull some strings, maybe matching pictures of breasts with bras or something. Something involving hosiery and legs maybe?

  4. Poor Mike Mibach. He has blown a perfect opportunity drop the frat boy sportscaster image and get more authoritative and serious about his delivery and current events and he hasn't refined anything. Sad.

  5. They need to take off the news at 4PM and put on "Adam 12". It worked when I was young, and maybe it will remind people to drive a little more safely.

  6. Why should Gary Radnich acknowledge the death of Damon Bruce's father? Is Rich Lieberman insane?

    1. Did Damon acknowledge the death of Gary's father?

    2. Agreed. There is mutual dislike from both men. Why be phony?

  7. Ok I get what happened at KTVU.

In the zeal to get the show on the air(and making some money) they bypassed the focus groups.

It's considered ass-backwards to do it this way except for one thing...
    They had nothing to lose.

Now the focus groups are pointing out some serious flaws and some tweaking will ensue.

    Lots of tweaking!

It may get a lot worse before it gets "better".

So lets assume that all of you are the charge at KTVU...

    What would you do?

    2 stipulations....
You cannot hire anyone new(yet), and you cannot cancel the show.

    What would YOU do?

  8. KTVU should have had Claudine Wong as the lone newscaster at 4PM. If so; the newscast would not be in trouble. Keba and Mike are nice people but the name of the game is ratings.

  9. Charlie and Humphrey should read the news for a week, keep everything else the same. Ratings would skyrocket.

    ReplyDelete
  10. And Claudine Wong would bring ratings? Please. Nobody watches the news here, no matter who is on. That's the sad realization news ops here have not realized. They could do one morning cast and one late evening cast. But 4,5 6,? RIP.

  11. I dunno. I am watching now--seems like a solid broadcast to me. Many of us in the East Bay prefer KTVU because they tend to give a little more attention to local matters.

  13. At 4 pm, people are watching Ellen or Judge Judy or whatever besides news. Who the heck is home at 4 pm to watch local news anyway. Most people aren't even home at 5 pm these days. Does anyone get home from work before 6. Local news at these time slots are anachronisms.

  14. VDLC and Liz may not like each other but neither of them is exactly grabbing the helm or PIX would not be floating Dana king rumors. If management thought either of them was going to move the needle they were nuts.

Cook will have her baby, VDLC will cover and then one of them will move on. VDLC back to a cable channel or Cook's daddy will get her and LA gig.

As long as GAME ONNNNNNNNNN! gets axed that's all that really matters

  16. Hey, Hey Rich,

I just saw an ad for condoms while I was browsing your site. Are you doing trade-outs to get your supply? With all the references to women and boobs on this site are we targeted as possible victims of STD's? Or is it a Darwin approach that the world doesn't need more people of the kind that read this blog?

    1. I guess you're not aware so I'll be the one to let you know. Computer ads are geared for each computers unique browsing habits. I see ads from Porsche and Rolex while you see ads from rubber companies.

      Spanks a lot.

  17. Noelle Walker's style of reporting isn't great at all. Won't miss Ayers if she goes. Jennings is better than Diane Sawyer who was always leaning into the screen. Wasn't sorry to see Sawyer retire.

  18. I could see Veronica anchoring at fox 11 on either light newscast like Good Day LA or on a Social Media-based broadcast like Studio 11 LA; as for Liz, she'd probably end up at KTLA in some capacity, reuniting her with her former KMIR peeps Liberte Chan and Christina Pascucci

  19. Well, I've only have three weeks left on my sentence working for The Sports Bleeder. I plan on leaving fat-ass a nice long scratch on his freaking ugly leased Bentley that he loves to park in the Handicap stalls. Opps...so sorry, didn't see that piece of shit while I was flinging my keys. Never in my life have I've met a piece of human scum like this asshole.
