Ask Rich Lieberman

  1. What do you make of right wingers who blame/criticize Obama for everything he does AND everything he doesn't do? They remind me of small time hack Charlie Freedman on KSCO who is still traumatized by both of Obama's presidential victories.

    1. It's boring. It's predictable and most notably, it turns off listeners/viewers--they turn the channel, use the remote...and it's not just a anti-Obama thing. GWB received the same treatment --I'm not alone in this mantra as most Americans are fed up with all the polarizing activity on BOTH sides of the aisle --take a look at Congress' approval ratings.

    3. 10:37 represents exactly the type of polarizing jack ass Rich Lieberman points to...it is sad right wing radio caters to these Neanderthals, they think they're original thinkers aping works like sheeple and liberalism is a mental disorder. There are tons of things to criticize Obama about but these maniacs attack everything. Had he gone to Paris they would've found another reason to criticize him.

    4. Had Obama gone to Paris, they would have accused him of going only for a photo opportunity.

I hope to live long enough to read the "sad news" that Rush Limbaugh has died. Hopefully, it will result from some very painful and VERY long-lived medical issue... presumably one that's related to his obesity. I can think of few people in the world whose lives rotate more around lies and hatred and anger than Limbaugh's does.

    5. You must be a fan. Otherwise, how would you know? I saw MSNBC once. That was enough to know they are the other side of the same coin and never went back. Look for other outlets and weigh the difference.

  2. In the past you mentioned that Cheryl Jennings and Spencer Christian would have contracts expiring December 2014. Ditto for the kron weather person Jackie. Any updates?

    1. Yeah, and I went further: I said that ABC would not renew their contract. I was wrong...the information I received regarding both was from a usually reliable source.

I like Spencer Christian a lot so it goes without saying this one I'm glad I was wrong on...although Disney picks and chooses its time on layoffs notices and considerable layoffs always hit the O and O's at some point. Here's hoping Spence survives the latest round of pink slips soon on the radar.

  3. Why are Muslim leaders supposed to come out and denounce every single terrorist act? I don't expect Christian white leaders to come out and denounce every mass shooting conducted by a Christian white. If that were the case the white leaders would be coming out every other day...

    2. 7:57, when was the last time Christians hijacked four jetliners and flew them into high rise buildings full of people in the name of Jesus?

Find me the part in the New Testament that espouses something equivalent to the jihad mandated in the koran.

Because jihad IS part of the koran, and the actions by the jihadists over the last 14+ years is increasing and to the detriment of all (Including women and children suffering as muslims under the despotic and savage rule of islam) it IS the responsibility of "good" muslim leaders to denounce these acts.

    3. How about white/aryan Christian who massacred dozens in Norway? Where was your outrage? I don't recall your aryan brothers coming out to denounce that guy who identified as a Christian. I could cute more examples...

Remember that one? He was white and a small government right wing terrorist. I could name more...

  5. Before the Dickey Putsch KGO was at the top echelon in the ratings wars. Now, somewhere in the 30's. We keep being told that talk radio is dead but it wasn't dead in Nov 2011. How did they come to the conclusion that they needed to kill it?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Because quite frankly they are NOT radio people. They leverage radio station to broaden their financial portfolio and make good with their stockholders only they failed miserably on that front too--they not only don't understand broadcasting, their crappy businessmen too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rich, I get the part about them not being radio people. A six-month-old could figure that out. But, How can they, possibly, make money on a station that has become so far "below mediocre," that ABC news won't even affiliate with them any more?

I guess I'm just a dunce at finance.

      Delete
  7. One more thing. I'm assuming that highly paid consultants are telling news outlets (I'm talking to you KGO Radio and KTVU) that the thing is either high story count OR staying too long with a lead story. All the news in Paris-and everywhere else-Saturday AM and KTVU kept the first 10-15 minutes on the GGB. Yes it was closed, the news would have been that it was open! Yet with all this consulting being done, these stations are losing audience. If their advise is to act the same as the competition, why should I watch that station? I would think they would want to stand out. Can I become a consultant? I can lose money for a client faster than those guys.

  11. Why do so many of your reader's have knee jerk reactions and emotionally charged language responding to points of view that are centrist or to the right? Do they not see that they are behaving in the same manner that they are so critical of in others?

Why is it OK to generalize about "white Christians" or just "white suburban types (Walnut Creek fountain...)", but not about muslims or gangbangers from La Raza and so on?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Your second question, first: I've never referred to the Walnut Creek fountain with "white, suburban types"--yes, I made an inference that the TV consultants like to go their because it's white-centric/young --a chip in their demo and that it is hardly representative of multi-cultural Bay Area...as for the reason behind all the knee-jerk political reaction, without sounding too philosophical, I'd say it's combination Internet and the fact America is polarized to the max. Among other things.

  12. Does anyone have any stats on how large the internet streaming audience is for SF Bay Area stations? I would suspect it's less then 1% but I don't know. All the stations seems to be streaming so there must be a economic value to it or are they all just being trendy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nielsen does measure streaming listening. To get data on the granular station-by-station level, individual stations need to encode their streams with PPM. Most of the local stations I know of are not encoding their streams, as the stations are already making significant revenues on their streams. Stations are afraid to lose the existing 'alternative revenue' these streams provide if they instead choose to encode.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's true. I think Rich would be a lot better off if he published all comments. Hiding unfavorable comments is rather uncommon bothers many of us.

Rich, if someone criticizes you, go ahead and publish it. Readers can decide for themselves if the criticism has any merit. Seems like you have a low opinion of your readers if you don't think we can consider alternative view points objectively.

      Delete
    2. It's not the "unfavorable" comments, Dianne, nor the criticism...it's the snarky, rude and highly personal and vitriolic diatribe, comments that bother me and are not published by anonymous trolls ...Sure, I dish out, occasionally but I do so with name and don't hide behind my keyboard --there's a BIG difference.

      Delete
    3. No Rich, you routinely ignore polite yet critical comment.

You routinely hide comments that disagree with you even if they aren't snarky, rude, or personal and that's objectionable. You really have a hard time accepting any criticism.

      Delete
    4. Then, Dianne, based on me/415 Media causing you undue stress and me being unkind to criticism, maybe it's best you not read me because obviously I am contributing mass error in your opinion.

      Delete
    5. Rich, I never said anything about stress. I never said anything about mass error. I am stating a simple fact that you censor comments for no other reason than disagreeing with your opinion.

It is disappointing that when faced with an intellectual disagreement you resort to an unresponsive, childish comment, don't read my blog.

      Delete
    6. I'm done with this Dianne.
I'm sorry to have "disappointed" you. I've given you ample time--if that's not good enough, do whatever you have to do.

"Sure, I dish out, occasionally but I do so with name and don't hide behind my keyboard --there's a BIG difference."

People aren't hiding behind their keyboards on twitter, but you still block them so, once again, your logic is flawed.

  23. @Dianne F...

I used to feel that way too. The occasional comment I'd offer never saw the light of day. Doubly ironic is the fact RL periodically puts a disclaimer on his stories in an attempt to protect himself legally, but still kills comments anyways. Makes no sense. I'm a grown up. I can decide for myself which comments are worth reading.

However - the best way to get Rich to publish your comment is to include the phrase "I know you won't publish this" somewhere.

    ReplyDelete

    1. My thought would be, (and others too, I think), is if you find me to be that insulting and "censoring" critical comments, why then would you continue to come here? You're not only insulting and wimpy, you're kind of stupid too.

  25. Rich, not a question, just an observation. ABC hourly news not only left KGO because ABC's agreement with Cumulus expired. It wasn't just limited to KGO; ABC news is not airing (AFAIK) on any of the former ABC Radio O&Os, including flagships KABC and WABC. ABC struck a deal with another carrier, and I read that they wanted to continue to stay with Cumulus stations but it doesn't appear to have worked out that way.

  27. How about that ESPN coverage of the College Football Championship? The Megacast is at least 3 simultaneous (but different) feeds on Comcast/Xfinity and the ESPN website indicates 12 total feeds of various kinds(many web-only). Those guys at ESPN were really thinking out-of-the-box. ESPN can really deliver programming.

It's too bad ESPN doesn't make the whole thing a "Free Preview", would have been a easy way to blow the doors off everybody else for ratings.

  28. Dianne F doesn't read the same blog. I see critical comments on this page all the time, many toward RL. And I stand by my opinion issued many, many times over that without RL, we wouldn't be able to hold the entire Bay Area media accountable for both their public airings and their dirty laundry at the expense of viewers, listeners, bloggers, and their own staff. This blog remains as important as ever.

  29. "What network is KGO using?" - Cumulus switched from ABC news to a "white labeled" CNN news product -- they are specific in NOT naming the news source on-air, rather, it's intentionally generic, and we are supposed to refer to it as "KGO National News" or some such.

Also gone are the ABC "Newscalls" (satellite fed news audio cuts that the local news programmers or show producers could tap into), and the text based "ABC Newswire", which worked a lot like Associated Press.

Finally, I find interesting that you Rich seem to have the perception that ABC News left Cumulus; my perception is the reverse: that Cumulus didn't want to pay the costs associated with remaining an ABC news affiliate organization, so they simply bought something cheaper. And yes, this affects ALL Cumulus properties; we are now expressly instructed to NEVER mention "ABC" anything on air in the context of news. Essentially, once again, the Dickeys are expecting us to put out more with less: fewer people, fewer resources, fewer tools, no supplies, etc. Any expenditure over $50 requires direct approval from Atlanta; you can't gas up the news van without getting Lew Dickeys' signature.
