  1. Is the reason this blog is so negative because you hate your own life?

    1. No, do you?

I'm critical and cynical --all the same and have this here to call out Bay Area media--something severely lacking in this market, but have a nice day.

      Sincerely, lover of life.

    2. Hey 804, do you view the world from the Disney perspective? Do you watch the garbage local news on TV or listen to what is perceived as radio? Maybe you've got skin in the game so you need to be who you are. But reality says it all SUCKS.

    3. Hey 930, I don't view the world from the Disney perspective. However I don't try to build myself up by running everyone else down.

    4. First of all, WHO are YOU? Typical troll that says a lot of "brave" things from the secrecy of your home, you're a COWARD.

      Take a hike, punk.

    5. Who is 804? Rich, your blog does not support individual identities as so many other similar sites do. In fact, your blog encourages ANONYMOUS comments by making it the default commenting option.

"Take a hike, punk" is a thuggish comment and unworthy of someone with your pretentions.

    1. Sure, why not?
      Wouldn't you?

Of course in KRON's case, I'd have to talk about window blinds and lawn furniture.

      LOL!

  3. KTVU news on channel 36 at 7:00, why is there a segment of Q@A between Gasia Mikaelian and Harvey Levin of TMZ? This wasn't a one time thing but happens everday on KTVU news at 7.

Reporting celebrity gossip is pretty low in my opinion.

    1. TMZ has a program on KICU and is debuting on KTVU soon--coincidence?, perhaps, you be the judge.

Yes, the FOX-of-a-cation has begun at Channel 2.

  4. When you calculate the talk vs commerical time on KNBR do you subtract the endless intro music, dump talk and other non sport talk from your calculation>

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, which if you add it all up adds at least another 4-5 minutes to non-content time--everyone is entitled to make a buck; KNBR is no exception. But when you place over 30 minutes of commercial spots into various hours, you drive away listeners and become greedy. That's what Cumulus and KNBR are doing and ultimately, they'll suffer the consequences.

      Delete
    2. You also need to subtract out Rod's stuttering as well any Grateful Dead references. Anything Kate Scott says should not count either.

  5. Repeated here at least since last summer, WHEN will "KSFO Morning Show" be terminated in its current form?

Ridiculous and unprofessional are understated descriptions of this chronic media embarrassment.

Today, for example, Brian resorted to whining about his personal entanglement(s) with the DMV and then soliciting listeners' suggested resolutions. What a waste of valuable air time!

I know, don't listen. Ratings aside, how does anyone abide such daily devolution into broadcast oblivion?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sussman and the gravel-voiced little chick are only on because Cumulus has nothing better and no one listens to KSFO unless they're white guys in their 60's who drive trucks in Modesto.

      Delete
  6. So what happened at KRON4 this weekend? No news because they were moving? What would've happened if something catastrophic happened in the Bay Area? Would we have been reduced to seeing historic video of Robin Williams doing the weather?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I haven't watched them --A new building doesn't change the dynamics except the address is a little nicer--I'll do a review on the new look and furniture soon enough.

As for your other observation about news neglect b/c of move, that's been the case for the better part of 12 years when "moving" wasn't an excuse.

    ReplyDelete
  8. WTF was KGO thinking when they hired this asshole Chip Franklin? I hope they get enough complaints that they show him the door soon. At least they made a good move by hiring Angie Coiro. Too bad they didn't put her in the 12:00 to 3:00 slot.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't listened much to make a call on Franklin yet --I'll give him 30 days to form an opinion. That said, so far the public reaction has been all negative, not good.

      Delete
    2. Why am I not surprised you're a fan of Angie. The animal that represents your party is a perfect mascot for you, German.

      Delete
    3. Germancarsonly, I wholly agree with you on Angie Coiro. And, yes, I'd rather hear her on the M-F afternoon slot.

As far as Chip Franklin goes, I like Rich's idea to give him a month to "settle."

I posted last week, saying that I think he's not used to the Bay Area audience, yet ... (OK, I'll admit that sounds a bit snobby, but I think it's true). So, I can't go so far as "asshole." I think he's bright, and will develop polish, in time.

I read that Franklin wrote for Leno, for a while. Given that he seems to love MOS inserts, I wonder if he worked on the "Jay Walking," segment, wherein respondents gave ridiculously stupid answers to Jay's (usually political) questions.

      Delete
    4. From what I have read about him his listeners in San Diego considered him pretty conservative. That fits in well down there as that is about all there is on SD radio. The Bay Area has more conservative hosts than it needs.

      Delete
    5. The Bay Area has more liberals than it needs.

      Delete
    6. I don't think you can ever have too many liberals. If it upsets you move to stinking Texas.

      Delete
    7. The libs in the Bay Area are living off the fruits of the land built by conservatives back in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Without tech starting and thriving here under a Republican governor, state, and mindset back then leeches such as yourself and others wouldn't have flocked here. You're welcome.

      Delete
    8. @7:48 You don't know much about California do you? Probably because you moved here from Bumfuck Missouri or some other miserable red state. I'm a native and have been here for 65 years. When the tech boom started the governor was the father of our current governor, Democrat Pat Brown. The governorship has gone back and forth between parties since then, but will now stay Democratic probably forever. The last two Republican candidates were handed their asses and the last Republican governor was a major embarrassment.

As for as me personally. Dickhead you don't have a clue who I am and what I've done with my life.

      Delete
    9. Jerry Brown was Governor from '75 to '83. John Tunney was a Senator from '71 to '71, and Alan Cranston was Senator from '69 to '93. Not an absolute conservative state and mindset during some of the era you referenced.

Of course, tech expanded tremendously in the mid to late '90s. Boxer and Feinstein established their stronghold in the senate; there was a general trend toward liberalism in California, and Clinton was in the White House during that period.

      Delete
    10. Correction: Tunney was a Senator from '71 to '77.

    11. 7:02 old white and angry. Your time is about up

      Delete
    12. Someone above said that Chip Franklin needs to develop some polish. I disagree. I think he has too much polish and is too slick and speedy for the Bay Area. I'll go for some humor and depth. He simply is not interesting to me. I prefer Ed Baxter on the other station.

  9. Now that Jacqueline Bennett will leaving KRON and Spencer Christian supposedly leaving KGO, I'm hoping they both strongly consider hiring the excellent Lawrence Karnow instead of hiring a young, cheap weathercaster. Rich, what do you think--keep up the great work

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like and have written positively about Karnow but he might be better off going to another market, which would be tough since his wife is here...doubt KGO/KRON would hire another woman.

    2. > I'm hoping they both strongly consider hiring the excellent Lawrence

      HA HA HA HA HA!

I've heard rumors that at least one station is considering hiring college kids for credit for things like working the booth and driving the trucks, but for the latter their insurance won't allow it.

  10. Have you seen Karel's new TV show?

It's worse than his radio show because you have to actually look at him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. a) You didn't have to wait for a TV show to look at him. People can watch him do his radio shows live everyday on U-stream.

b)Karel is not ugly. Overweight, yes, definitely, but so is most of America. And he does exercise.

      c) If you don't want to look at him, why are you watching? Change the channel.

To be clear, I'm not defending Karel as a talk show host. I don't like the way he does it and I think KGO would be better off without him. I just think that you're hitting below the belt by criticizing his looks.

  11. Why do you cherry pick what comments get posted? I've submitted several comments that you refuse to post. What's your criteria?

    1. As I have said, selecting comments that are to the CORE of the subject --I don't have a "criteria." The comments are posted based on editorial control, MY control.

    2. Thank you for clarifying that your criteria IS totally subjective.

In the past you have suggested that the criteria was objectively based on some vaguely defined decency standard.

      From Wikepedia:

Hanukkah (/ˈhɑːnəkə/ hah-nə-kə; Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה, Tiberian: Ḥănukkāh, usually spelled חנוכה, pronounced [χanuˈka] in Modern Hebrew; a transliteration also romanized as Chanukah or Chanukkah).

So whether and H or a C person- Hanukkah Sameach!

  13. I listened to KSCO's Saturday special last week. The best part was when you called in and did impersonations of Joe Lieberman and Dr. Hank Kissinger. When is that idiot MZ going to bring back your show?

    1. The only show worth a damn on that station is Ruth Copland. Every other major show is right wing trash. KSFO lite. Is it any wonder 95% of callers are white males over 65 years old? I've emailed MZ several times to bring you back.

  14. Rich: What is your current opinion of Claudine Wong?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think she's ok. She's begun to reveal a personality and seems more relaxed and friendly--a far different persona from her cold, non-smile days, just my opinion.

She obviously has quite a few fans and is definitely beloved at the station. And she thinks so much of that that she wants some appreciation.

As a news anchor frankly I've seen better but she's getting better.

  15. Since you've started this blog nothing has improved in Bay Area Radio or Media, or that is at least the story you seem to be telling on a day to day basis. What do you think the point of the blog is at this point knowing that no blogger or "critic" is going to change the way these companies do business?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't/don't write this blog as a means for companies to "change the way they do business." That's for them to chew on--I'm here to call them out when I see something that stinks to high heaven --anything else is purely on their part.

    2. I'm not a fan of Copeland. His final hour where he brings in his buddies is one of the worst in radio.

But, last weekend he threw Cosby under the bus and then backed the bus up to make sure he was dead. He said he wants nothing to do with Cosby any longer.
