SF Bay Area August '14 Radio Ratings; KCBS/KNBR Hold Serve; KGO/KSFO Tied; 95.7 FM 'The Game' Continues Into Oblivion

KGO's transformation can't come too soon as it ties KSFO. (Must be a real party at 55 Hawthorne).

The Game --95.7 FM all-sports foray is still an abject failure, (how does the PD keep his job?)

KNBR holds serve, as does KCBS.

*Once again, the so-called "beauty-contest"-PPM numbers are not the ratings advertisers use to buy time but reflect who's being listened to and who is not.

  1. Radio ratings!? RADIO RATINGS !!!!????

Can we talk a moment about Elizabeth Cook actually touching Allen's sleeve? At the end of KPIX's 5pm news?

    Now, THAT's news.

  2. What an embarrassment KGO and KSFO have become. It is like seeing the ravishing prom queen 20 years later after she's been around the block a few too many times. Only a shell of her former self. Which reminds me of Christine Craft. I heard you Rich, on KOMY this afternoon call out Ms. Craft. Put up or shut up Christine. Why are you so afraid to debate Rich on the Israeli/Palestinian issue? Are you only a good "debater" on the radio when you control the dump button? Step up into 2014 Christine, it is not the good ol' 1980s when you appeared on Letterman.

  3. How DOES the 95.7 PD keep his gig? Great question, Rich. Entercom spent big bucks on a TV ad campaign that starred the recently-departed Aubrey Huff. Nice hire, Jason. Just another in a series of lame moves. He makes KNBR management seem professional.

  4. Fire rockets into Christine's neighborhood as rockets were fired into my friends' neighborhood in Israel, and see how long Christine holds her views. And, no matter what you think about Israel firing back and knowing it will kill civilians because the Hamas cowards hide among civilians and want civilian casualties, let us not forget that Hamas' charter calls for the destruction of Israel. It is no different from Hezbollah or ISIL. Only the brutality of ISIL is worse, but you can bet that such brutality has been noted by Hamas and I guarantee you, if it could it would bring down upon Israel the same murder, rape and summary executions. In fact, Hamas has added summary executions to its long list of war crimes. Only naive Americans and Europeans, secure in their middle-class or better lifestyles, would suggest any toleration of HAMAS. It is a genocidal organization and just doesn't kill Jews. It has killed people of other religions, too, BECAUSE of their religion, just like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran.

  5. Meanwhile, K-Fox, which switched formats a month ago on its SF frequency, is (unsurprisingly) down nearly a full share. So... where did all those rock-loving listeners go? Not to The Bone or KFOG, apparently, since both stations were down slightly. They should've benefitted greatly from the K-Fox switch, no? WTF?

  6. I've said it before and I'll say it again, 'The Game' has zero chance of taking away KNBR's listeners for several reasons: 1.) Weak signal that fades out in most parts of the bay area while the '50,000 watt blowtorch' can be heard over the entire western USA. 2.) KNBR has the three most popular teams in the area: the Giants, Niners and Warriors while 'The Game' has the two 'poor stepsisters,' who are always feeling overlooked: the A's and Raiders. 3.) KNBR has been doing sports and personality radio since way, way back. The all-sports format didn't start until the 1990s, but they always had a strong sports presence back in the 1970s (carried the Raiders and started carrying the Warriors), and 1980s, (got the Giants). And it's difficult to compete against a station that has had some of the most noteworthy local characters in radio in recent years locally: Frank Dill, Bob Lazich, Pete Franklin, Scott Ferrell, Ralph Barbieri, Tom Tolbert, and yes, even Radnich, (although he's well past his shelf life), and too many others to list. Who does 'The Game' have on besides Greg Papa who is worth listening to? John Lund? Please! Chris Townsend? Rick Bucher? Jedadiah? Troy Clardy? Are you kidding me? The 'Game' is run like a minor league outfit that hopes to compete with the big boys, but hasn't got a chance. But their clueless PD could have helped himself by not panicking and firing the 'Rise Guys,' who were so much better than that dreadful morning show on KNBR. And they put, what, 'Townie,' Bucher and Aubrey Huff, (who was totally clueless about other sports besides baseball) on to try to compete with them in the morning? Have you heard that show by the way? Awful! That PD, Barnett, or Barrett, or whatever his name is, is lucky to still be working.

  7. Michael Graham has replaced Spencer Hughes per on-air presence. An ABC radio talk-show host, Graham disappeared from WMAL/Washington in 2005 after a flap involving anti-Islamic comments. Now he claims New York as prior locale.

Though Hughes' recorded ads are still running,, Graham bills himself as "host, emcee, and star of the show.".

  8. n a PPM market like the Bay area, it's "Cumes" that count. What as not shown is that The Game has 375,000 listeners,--- 50,000 less than KGO The programming is horrendous (that Rich is correct about,) but sports people looking for something different do listen - problems and all - to The Game. They just don't listen long enough and there aren't but 1/3 the listeners of KNBR. If they can tie or beat KGO, The Game will make plenty of money and slowly build the audience. Plus, if they get the same audience number of KGO, that means they also beat kSFO, which has the same share and only half of KGO's audience. Not bad company to be for such a shitty programming effort. Fix the format, get the share up and the audience level s not half bad. If KGO and KSFO take off, however, it will be curtains for The Game. They need to improve their shares for "ratings" and "audiience now before it's too late -- and not sit on their ass. High cumes is everything -- programming shares along with promotion get a station there. A station cannot win on "rating" shares alone. The audience share is even more important In this case, a good audience share, not listening long enough (due to poor programming.) Fire that PD and do some better programming. KGO has the exact same problem, as does KSFO. KKSF and KNEW have so little audience and no programming --- what does that ell you?

  9. Graham is a Cumulus is yet another stand up comedian working 8:30 to noon on Cumulus WYAY, Atlanta. He's a hard line right winger phoning it into KSFO and not afraid to get in your face. He is, really, a stand up comic. Why is it they continually fail at talk radio?

  10. I listened a little to this guy not impressed. Anyway, these are just fill in hosts I heard Sussman announcing a new line up on KSFO (or rather old line up) starting in a few weeks. 9 am. to noon Rush, Savage stays, so does Levin I believe, 6 to 9 p.m. Sean Hannity, then Glenn Beck to midnight, then Red Eye radio, and Sussmann stays. This line up is almost a copy cat of 960, unless they are changing, it does not make sense to me, and again the consumer looses, since there are fewer and fewer choices for us.
