KCBS Dumps Overnight Legend Dean Danos

Dean Danos

DANOS DUMPED BY KCBS

Dean Danos, the mega-veteran, overnight anchor for KCBS has been shown the door by the all-news outlet. His last day is Oct. 11.

  1. Mr. Danos had some trouble keeping up with the pace of news the morning of the Napa quake. I wonder if there's a connection. Plus it doesn't make sense to dismiss a fellow and then let him stay on a month. What's the deal with that?

    1. @8:09pm - You are a jackass. Danos was the only broadcaster even talking about the earthquake that night for quite some time. He seemed to be trying his best to find and distribute badly needed info in a media format that is no longer local or even really set up to report real breaking news.

    2. Yes, you're correct!! After the quake, I couldn't sleep so I drove through my neighborhood in Marin checking for any damage while listening to Danos, He was superb, a voice of calm and put out clear and concise information that no other station came anywhere near. What a shame for him to have lost his job.

  3. Can you clarify? Is this Danos guy the same one who within 10 minutes of the quake went live on kcbs to talk about it and start taking calls? I was awake at that time and heard it throughout. Where did he screw up to get canned? If he's canned I'd be hard pressed as a manager to fire him over the earthquake coverage. If that's the case I'd like to provide Mr. Danos the phone number of a prominent labor law litigator in SF...

  4. I thought KCBS was the last station to actually have a pulse in Northern California, and knew what they were doing. I was wrong. They are obviously run by bloodless, corporate cretins, who care only about ratings and the bottom line. Screw loyalty, experience, integrity and credibility! That's the radio biz these days. Quality is irrelevant and so is loyalty, a word that most of the guys waring suits who make the hard decisions have obviously never heard of. And this on a night when two of their own (Ed Cavanaro and Steve Bitker) were named to the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. Pathetic!

    1. I completely agree, 8:49!! We may never know the details behind his termination (it seems highly unlikely that it had anything to do with his quake coverage!) - but regardless: what could a seasoned broadcast veteran - certainly coming up on a rather prestigious retirement - have done that was soooo egregious as to cause his unceremonious termination?? I also agree with 8:43....there are many reputable labor law practitioners who would love to take this on, if appropriate. Good luck to you, Dean.

  5. C'mon guys, do I have to be the one to say it, to address that elephant in the room of ideas? Mr. Danos is,,,, how can I put this delicately, Mr. Danos is 'a bit long in the tooth'. It should not be so shocking that presuming his contract was up, therefore, the station is ready for a new face and a new voice, while saving a bit of money at the same time. This is the way of the workplace, the young or the different replace the old, or the familiar. I wish him luck. He will probably find other venues for his skills in the Bay Area. Eventually, the same thing will happen to me in my field of work. I already know that I won't be able to retire in my sixties. No. Maybe not till I'm 75, if I live that long. I am preparing to diversify in my dotage.

  6. Dean is class and deserves better. KCBS is the radio equivalent of KTVU, a once great station having lost its reputation

  7. the bay area is run by 30/40 somethings now, and radio is getting killed here more so than in any other major city (although all getting hurt), so why would it surprise you when an outlet tries to bring in fresh blood? it's a dog eat dog world.

as for the quake maybe it's true. why bash the messenger. no one said he wasn't live and local rather thar he couldn't keep up. not saying it's true because I don't know but CAN IT BE?

good luck the rest of the way, Dean.

  8. my problem is with dave padilla, who simply can't handle a "live" interview without repeating words, stumbling over words, sometimes stuttering. this happens all the time with dp. aren't the producers at kcbs aware of this?

  9. The name of the game is "What have you done for me lately." It is true where ever you work. Not just radio.

    1. The gentleman in question did a great job with breaking(literally) news in Napa. Do you think that would help or hurt his soon to be former station? Would the audience in the future, with the next big quake, be more or less likely to tune into that station?

  10. I have no specific knowledge about Mr. Danos' workplace situation. However, to suggest that he had trouble with the Napa quake news is just wrong. Similarly, to suggest that a radio station is looking for a new "face" defies the obvious.

    1. when someone suggests a new "face" I think most people understand that to mean a new persona.

try not being a contrarian moron for one.

    2. anon at 10:21pm..........oh the irony is delicious.

    3. dear 10:21. Radio, as opposed to television, is about voices, not faces. Perhaps you'd not heard of the old phrase, " a face for radio". It's meant to be ironic, 6:57.
How does one "try not being a contrarian moron for one(sic)"? Is that different than being so for two or three? Why would KCBS need a new "persona". Aren't they on top of the ratings heap? You must be so proud to be a psychic, knowing as you assert, what "most people understand". Are you rich also?

  11. I confess that I didn't know the name, until reading it on this website, as I don't listen to overnight radio ... as a rule. But, I join the chorus of those of those who say that KCBS was the first (and for quite a time) ONLY station ... Radio or TV ... with information, calls and general coverage of the Napa quake.

    1. Ditto - he was the only one on "live" the night of the quake - and the only voice of reason and calm when most of us didn't have any idea how bad or how wide spread damage might have been.

  12. I'd bet money that they're going to give that shift to Martin Lenz who much younger and already working the Sunday overnight.

  13. Demos, demos, demos...it's a demo thing - just like what happened in NYC a few months ago - and what's sadly happening now
