Bay Area Sports Media and 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick war of words...or lack thereof ---

*Culture clash

*Disconnect intensifies with report of racial slur; he denies, they persist.

*Situation intensifies with 49ers play and off-field issues. McDonald situation factor.

*Kap cool to 'being nice.'

  2. Kaepernick may be a great athlete, but whoever is handling him, his agent, etc is doing a LOUSY JOB! They need to remind this guy that he needs to be more available and outgoing with the media, even if he doesn't like it. That's part of his job! But 'Kaep' has been surly and uncommunicative ever since he took over as QB, and really for no reason, other than he doesn't like dealing with the media and their sometimes leading or annoying questions. Well guess what Colin? You're getting paid big bucks to play a kids game and you need to man up and behave like an adult, not like some petulant gang-banger. I had heard the guy was going to make an effort this year to be more agreeable and approachable, but obviously that's not happening as today's post game session clearly showed. He barely answered any questions as usual, and looked like some punk, wearing his pink head sets. Why don't you grow up Colin and start taking some responsibility for being a leader? Your image, if you care anything at all about it, is taking a beating, because of your immature, selfish behavior.

    1. Outstanding points 7:05. Let's remember, however, that Kaep has had very poor example from Harbaugh, who treats sessions with the press like trying to
pass a kidney stone. In addition, Harbaugh learned from Ditka.

  3. Kaeperpick is a thug wannabe loser. His petulance is not fitting for someone who plays a position that is supposed to be a leader on the team. For someone who makes millions of dollars to not just play a game, but in this day and age of media bringing in the advert dollars that pay his exorbitant salary, to also interact with the media and through the media the fans, he is not up to par. Even if he'd won the Superbowl a couple of years ago his behavior would not be justified.

Considering he's an overrated average-at-best QB, he needs to learn to at least pretend to interact in a civil manner. Otherwise he should just go hand out with the homies wherever that pose is acceptable. He is not a winner on or off the field.

It's a shame that as they slide into a Raider-type persona overall that the 49ers have chosen this POS to "lead" them on the field. Not guaranteed to win over or retain fans.

What mangled garbage. Learn how to write before criticizing someone else. By the way, CK's demeanor is the least of his team's problems.

    2. A typo is not mangled garbage. It's a typo.

You on the other hand are garbage. And garbage with low reading comprehension abilities.

No, thug. Your sentence is rife with "typos," so it's apparently you who has low reading comprehension.

  4. I figured Kap used a racial slur. I figured he was lying to the press about it. I don't care about either one. This story just made Drudge, so the emasculation of anything NFL testosterone related continues.

I'm disturbed by the media's seeming attempt to conflate the physical abuse issues in players private lives which come to warrant the law's attention and verbal assaults on the field. I called Orwellian shenanigans when they made that an infraction starting this year, and here we are...and its Kap at that. It's pointless for him to admit it since the truth is the media would be just as unrelenting in their aim to posture the verbal conduct in the NFL with the physical abuse in some players private lives.

I hope he keeps flipping the bird to the media and not because I worship football players.

  5. He's rapidly becoming the next Barry Bonds. The media here kisses his ass constantly but he still acts like a primadonna. Now he got caught in a lie about what he said to draw that penalty last week and he's offended that the media is calling him on it. He's just a bad guy.

  6. Rich,

I have followed your lead on a couple of stories throughout the last few years since KGOne's demise. I'm not as anti-Karel as you but I can see why he bothers you. You can't deny that Karel is pretty good at promoting his social media life and he even promotes other hosts as well like David Weintraub which is how I ever found out about his show. I got a 'tweet' from Weintraub tonight thru the KGO Twitter. I don't hear his show that often but I appreciate his willingness to take a stand on things and one of those things is Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers. I heard him last week defending Ted Robinson too which has to go against the company line since they suspended him. Today he posted a tweet that was bashing Kapernick for being the antithesis of the Bay Area. I know you're not a big fan but at least he's willing to call out the bad and go against the company line. Just my two cents!

  7. I would ask him what music he listens to after a game like this? He has that headphone around his neck so I assume he was listening when he was interrupted and asked to do the interview.

  8. Very disappointed in both the team for how they are handling all this adversity, and Kaepernick for poorly relating to the media that is simply doing its jobs. In the case of the former, the 49ers have to dig deepest within. In the case of the latter, Harbaugh has to have a one-on-one with Kaepernick on how to better handle the press, even as the coach himself is not a fan of them either but handles our media much better than his QB is so far. Doesn't help Kap that Dwight Clark was critical of his act. Kap must really get it together, especially with unbeaten Philly coming in.
As for McDonald, it is not only a distraction to the team, it is a distraction to the entire Silicon Valley community. The San Jose Police - even with its limited resources - and the Santa Clara County deputies all knew that the longer they dragged the investigation on, the worse the uncertainty is not just for their local NFL team, but for every citizen who needs their services for other cases and to better community morale. There was plenty of time to cover every spider web corner of the house and find every witness to interview. There should have been a decision by now. Shame on the authorities for procrastinating. No excuse for not gathering all the evidence in a more urgent manner. Now the whole Bay Area seems distracted since the domestic violence scandal began. S.J.P.D. and the County Deputies could deliver its biggest service yet by tidying up and finishing this uncertainty that is plaguing our region. Decision now!

  9. I did not hear his post game press conference but many of us are not surprised.
Kaepernick may have worn thin on the media around here.
I know he has a cool if not icing relationship with Lowell Cohn.
Oh well maybe the honeymoon is over.

  10. I can't speak to Kaepernick's demeanor at his press conference, but I sure would like to know who his wardrobe consultant is.
Kaep where did you get that white coat with red trim? Tony Orlando possibly?

  11. The San Jose 49ers are LOSERS because the press isn't doing their job properly. Isn't it obvious?

  12. The headphones are an endorsement deal and that's why he wears them. I don't get how some tattoos automatically make some guy a gang banger. Half the NFL and NBA have tattoos. It seems like a rite of passage these days, and not just among athletes. As a guy in his 50s, I don't know how great a long-term idea it is, but times have changed Ward and June.

    1. It's not JUST the tats, but the flat brim cap, the body language and poses, the manner of speaking, the stupid headphones at all times. Especially the poses and manner of speaking, and overall attitude.

    2. Beats headphones are the biggest scam to hit the music industry since Milli Vanilli. If I'm gonna shell out $250 for headphones they better come with 100 free music downloads.

  13. I agree @ 7:29 am. I'm not a fan of tattoos, but they are all over the place, and on everyone! My work colleague has one, and she is in her 50s! Branding anyone with a tattoo as a thug or gang banger is stereotyping. Surprising and distressing to see this line of narrow thinking in the bay area. I thought we were more tolerant than this, given the wide range of diverse people living here.

  14. The man's a thug. Period. Look at QBs such as Drew Brees, the Mannings and Russell Wilson. They rep the NFL well. Kaepercon doesn't. I don't care if it's a generation thing. One thing overlaps all generations: acting with dignity, respect and class. Along with the other crap that's going on the NFL, this isn't setting a great example.

Kaepernick shouldn't be equated to Barry Bonds. Bonds is a legend in his own mind. Like Kaepercon, he was a self-serving jerk. But he cheated and is still in denial.

People like Kaepercon are a prime example of the new environment of the 49ers. It's one of greed, selfishness and bullying. Bill Walsh wouldn't have allowed this.

  15. BILL WALSH and EDDIE D covered up JOE MONTANA's coke habit. That's the biggest open secret in the bay area.

spare me the b.s. about players having better morals from days gone by...

fans couldn't care less how Kap treat the media. The media is just pissed they know this and can't do much about it except whine. Y'all not needed to promote the sport anymore, it aint the 30's. get a clue.

    1. This fan does care about how Pick comports himself. I don't care for lowell cohn at all, but I do think Pick is an arrogant, petulant piece of crap who doesn't know that interacting with the fans and media is part of why he's paid so exorbitantly to play a freakin' game.

  16. Bill Walsh isn't coaching the Niners and he isn't coming back anytime soon. Harbaugh strikes me as a pretty old school type guy: son of a coach and always quoting Bo Schembechler. Unlike some folks on here, I think he realizes it's a different generation. Alex Smith was pretty whitebread, but I'm sure glad we have Kaepernick instead - I'd rather have a potential game breaker than the prototypical game manager.

    1. I'd rather have Alex the game manager than Kaep the potential game breaker, because Kaep rarely lives up to his potential. Smith was the ultimate team player. Kaep's more interested in endorsement deals and posing for magazine covers.

    3. "I'd rather have Alex the game manager than Kaep the potential game breaker, because Kaep rarely lives up to his potential. Smith was the ultimate team player."

Not to mention he had excellent clock control, made few mistakes and was a very efficient passer. The Niners were stupid to dump him for the shiny new toy who has yet to--and may never--prove himself.

    4. In four years, Kaepernick has a QB rating over 90 and Smith didn't even crack 80 in his years here. And the couch pundits doubt Harbaugh, an ex NFL QB who coached two future NFL QBs in college, Josh Johnson and Andrew Luck, got Stanford and the Niners back on track and chose Kaepernick over Smith, with the blessing of Trent Baalke, I might add. Yet you're right and they're wrong. You might want to reassess your position based on the facts and evidence.

    5. It's Kaepernick's second full season. Compare his stats to Smith's first three seasons who in seven seasons either was hurt or sucked except for his last year. Don't forget folks, people were happy that Shaun Hill and Tim Rattay replaced Smith. Selective memory I think.

    6. Smith was the No. 1 overall pick - talk about wasted potential.

      Delete
    7. "And the couch pundits doubt Harbaugh...got Stanford and the Niners back on track."

Yeah, right. It's clear how on "track" they are: inability to stop the opponent, stupid penalties and an offense who can't run the ball. Obviously, you're the one who needs to heed the facts.

      Delete
    8. "It's Kaepernick's second full season. Compare his stats to Smith's first three seasons..."

Yet, Kap is still committing the same silly mistakes he did when he first started. Combine that with the fact that he repeatedly fails to read the other teams' defense, telegraphs his key receivers, panics during a blitz and has poor clock management and you've got someone without nearly the football intelligence Alex had.

    9. @1:53
When the Niners advanced to the Super Bowl against New Orleans and lost, it wasn't Alex Smith's "potential" on display. When they faced the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game, it wasn't Alex Smith's turnovers that lost the game and it certainly wasn't his FOUR turnovers that caused the team to implode against the Bears. So yes, lets talk about "wasted potential."

  17. Dwight Clark needs to keep his hypocritical egomaniac mouth shut. When he was playing for the 49ers, he beat his then girlfriend, Shawn Weatherly, a Miss USA. She said he did it. He never denied it. If he were still playing, he would be off the field like Ray Rice. So shut it up, you Dwight Clark...and remember what a bully and beater YOU ARE.

  18. The pects, the tats, the abs, the hats, the shades, the Beats...... I'm sure that buys him tons of cred with the homies and gets him laid plenty, but he's being paid to play on the field. Needs to focus just a bit more on that, I think.
